Paddy the wizard, Paddy the athlete, he’s going all the way

547

We like Patrick Roberts; all of us do. He’s the kind of player who gets fans out of their seats, an entertaining throwback to a time when wing wizards were wanted by all. But Patrick is more than that.

I spent a bit of time with him last year at an Adidas ‘Backed by Messi’ event. He was very chilled for most of the day, before becoming sharply focussed, “I need to eat.” “I need to eat” was said several times. It had an urgency, the time for shooting the breeze was over, within minutes, a meal was needed to keep physiological objectives on plan.

Patrick wasn’t seeing many first team minutes at that time, but focus was complete. This is an athlete who plans to go all the way in the game.

He’s at Celtic because he wanted to be here. Manchester City were looking for an incredible figure for his transfer, well over double Celtic’s previous highest transfer fee, although perhaps not so incredible given the market in England. Without Patrick’s patience, City would have found a buyer, but Patrick knows where he and Celtic are going this season.

Great to have you back, Paddy.  You’re going to love playing centre half.  Ask big Nir, it’s an absolute blast!

    * Celtics Champions League omissions for consecutive years were intentional (Ernie Lynch)

    ###

Budget constraints and managerial appointments are intentional.

And the consequences are reasonably predictable.

    =====================

Budget is determined by income. Income was reduced significantly when Rangers liquidated.

This was therefore NOT intentional but an unavoidable consequence of budget reduction.

Its why they died and we didn’t Ernie.

  2. At first i thought signing Paddy on loan was disappointing.

But realistically we could not afford a player of his calibre who is owned by an epl club.

I also think Brendan accepts the short duration as young Mikey Johnson could develop this season to back up JF next.

Complicated planning future strategy in this corrupt and financially doped footballing environment.

So these 3 donkeys are better than CalMac, unbelievable.

Scotland assistant Mark McGhee says in-form Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor was overlooked for the latest national squad because West Bromwich Albion’s James Morrison, Crystal Palace’s James McArthur and Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan are the players in possession and seasoned performers at the top level.

    ——

Strange one. Strachan himself said he wanted players who are playing at the highest level which is Champions League.

One of the four is playing in the Champions League, but it’s the one who ISN’T in the squad!

  5. TRADITIONALIST88 on 29TH AUGUST 2017 2:56 PM

So budgets, and ambitions, were reduced intentionally as a consequence of the huns going bust and the loss of The Old Firm income.

And once the safety net of The Old Firm (or whatever name you prefer) income reappears, which might be necessary if you are papped out of Europe at the earliest possible stage, budgets and ambitions are increased.

That sounds like prudent stewardship, does it not?

    So, intentional.

  6. BSR

I have been in negotiation with Man Citeh and agreed a signing on fee of £10m (paid immediately) for my 3 year old grandson who hasn’t kicked a ball yet. Money to be made from the crazy EPL. :)

Entirely in keeping with Strachan’s stubborn and headstrong nature though.

  9. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL

Don’t you realise that the epl is the bestest league ever?

Their dominance in Europe proves that.

  10. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL

I for one would like to see no Celtic players in scotland squad. Seasoned professionals = won nothing

Ron67 – would be surprised if JH went on loan

  11. JH will be cover for Scott Sinclair, he is not good enough on the right wing to do himself justice

  12. I tried raising some enthusiasm for the Scotland squad posts but I failed.

    Can someone please end international football?It’s like tRUMP,phoney,unattractive and,in Scotland’s case,a touch orange. ;)

    Wrong order. Easy format:

    1. Huns died.

    2. Income reduced (PL’s £10m hard to believe but not insignificant)

    3. Consequential effect on budget. If income goes down, so does budget.

    Basic stuff Ernie.

To suggest Celtic willingly didn’t qualify for the CL is not your finest moment pal.

    Thanks for the reply.

Hopefully the hip might be up for the Camino. Myles had to delay his trip due a hernia operation so why not?

I am not sure what resources are available in Scotland to plan such a trip.

Myles visits St James Church, James St, Dublin. They have a Camino Office there and there is a long history.

Here is a link to the Camino Society, which runs on office from St James’ Church. There’s other events in Ireland too. (see Celtic Camino).

“It’s a non-political, non-profit, non-sectarian and non-denominational, encompassing all of Ireland and is open to all.

I had to google the squad just to see who JH was!

Brendan particularly wanted him,he provides cover in many positions. He wasn’t signed as a first pick-IMO-and might be cursed with the worst description a footballer can have.

So Celtic’s ability to compete in Europe is dependent on some version of the huns being available to compete with?

It’s not a view I share, but thanks for making your position clear.

  20. DESSYBHOY

    I agree.

He has struggled on the right.

On Saturday he was effective only when he came across field.

He can’t cross on right foot and opponents know this forcing him outside and rendering him ineffective.

I feel for him a little as he seems unsure.

He will improve with time on the left.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at you taking that from what I said given the fact you can’t seem to acknowledge the link between income and budget….which is all the more remarkable given the number of articles on the issue since 2012.

Its why the huns died, Ernie.

When Celtic appointed Neil Lennon he didn’t with a reputation as a top manager. And look, that was before the huns died.

If you think Celtic intentionally didn’t qualify for the CL you need to log off asap and go for a lie down in a dark room.

We’ll come back to the basic arithmetic at a later date.

  27. Go tell the Spartim on

I think we’re always quick to write players off, cant say im a huge fan of hayes but think he’s good back up to sinclair and even KT on the left, he tried his best on saturday, but like all players they need a good run of games to integrate into the team. Come the turn of the year we’ll be glad we have him.
