Paddy the wizard, Paddy the athlete, he’s going all the way

547

We like Patrick Roberts; all of us do. He’s the kind of player who gets fans out of their seats, an entertaining throwback to a time when wing wizards were wanted by all. But Patrick is more than that.

I spent a bit of time with him last year at an Adidas ‘Backed by Messi’ event. He was very chilled for most of the day, before becoming sharply focussed, “I need to eat.” “I need to eat” was said several times. It had an urgency, the time for shooting the breeze was over, within minutes, a meal was needed to keep physiological objectives on plan.

Patrick wasn’t seeing many first team minutes at that time, but focus was complete. This is an athlete who plans to go all the way in the game.

He’s at Celtic because he wanted to be here. Manchester City were looking for an incredible figure for his transfer, well over double Celtic’s previous highest transfer fee, although perhaps not so incredible given the market in England. Without Patrick’s patience, City would have found a buyer, but Patrick knows where he and Celtic are going this season.

Great to have you back, Paddy.  You’re going to love playing centre half.  Ask big Nir, it’s an absolute blast!

  1. Seen a wee report there that Lazio and Fiorentina are interested in taking Eric on loan, because of his injury, with a view to buying if it clears up as normal.

The EPL transfer sums are just incredible.

BBC has rumours of Andros Townsend in a £28m transfer. Johnny Evans £30m.

Unbelievable really. The good thing is they keep buying their over inflated EPL tat as opposed to looking elsewhere. Clubs like West Brom, West Ham, palace and Bournemouth spending 30% of their turnover on players perhaps more. Players they can’t sell on.

We have a saturation of talent and if we scout and recruit correctly we add to that. Improved incremental performance in Europe and sell one or two players each year. Bring in the save or better. We can achieve the same turnover as a low to mid table EPL side with that strategy and outperform those clubs via Europe.

The reality of being a football team on the financial outer is a lesson which Celtic have obviously learned.

C.L. football is our only hope.

We have recovered from the disastrous two year hiatus and are now on course to be European contenders again .

Was at Croke Park on Sunday with my mates supporting the Dubs and was sitting beside a nice Tyrone chap who told me he had just got back from the St. Johnston game and we had a great ould natter about the Hoops. That is the great joy about the GAA how fans can mingle together without any problem. No doubt Tyrone will be back next year.

When you look at the transfers in England then look at the German, French and Spanish leagues you see huge disparity in fee vs value.

    Neymmar accepted!

German sides are spending about 12m on good players were English sides are paying around double. The German League is far superior. Some German sides only spend as much as Celtic! Shocker!

  12. Dont understand the rush to get rid of Eric. I think he is an effective operator in the SPL. He hasn’t let the team down too often.

So this week alone (and its only Tuesday) we have been advised:

    * that 58000+ at St Johnstone game equating to 10k empty seats (KevJ)

    * Patrick Roberts first name adding value in the eyes of the Celtic support (CultsBhoy)

    * Celtics Champions League omissions for consecutive years were intentional (Ernie Lynch)

And you thought the MSM were bad!

Tune in tomorrow, I doubt we can top the above but you never know.

You do realize the 58,000 figure is seats sold, therefore Kev J could be right about 10,000 empty seats (although I doubt it) and we will never know how many seats were left unfilled.

    * Celtics Champions League omissions for consecutive years were intentional (Ernie Lynch)

    ###

Budget constraints and managerial appointments are intentional.

And the consequences are reasonably predictable.

You maybe think these things are just haphazard, but they’re not.

Now of course you can cut budgets and appoint an ‘untried’ manager and still hope for European success, but you know (at least you do if you’re of the calibre of the Celtic Board) that it’s not very likely.

So for a couple of seasons Celtic went in one direction, and the appointment of BR represented a change of tack.

As to why all that happened we can only speculate.

  23. Tradionalist 88

I agree, nowhere near 10K but it was a post from our Kev J, not even the MSM take him seriously. HH.
