Paddy time, Europa and Remembrance

1055

Celtic recorded victories over Dundee and Hearts after their first two Champions League games but collected only one point from the two league games following the double header against Barcelona.  They also won after only two of their four Champions League qualifying games, so there is no reason to expect a convincing win against Inverness tomorrow.

Inverness slumped to a freak 1-5 defeat at home to Motherwell last week but that was their first defeat since the same team beat them earlier this season.  Like Celtic at the Camp Nou, they will be set on defending deeply at Celtic Park in order to prevent another collapse.  This could be an occasion for Paddy McCourt to prize them open.

I had a look at the Europa League group tables last night.  Udinese, who eclipsed us in the same competition last season, are bottom of their group this year, as are PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Athletic Bilbao (who beat Manchester Utd home and away last season) and Helsingborgs.  Other recent opponents Rapid Vienna and Hapoel Tel-Aviv are also bottom.

If you’re on Facebook there is a story on the CQN Magazine page about Benfica implying Celtic only beat Barcelona because of cheating.  Drop in and take a look.  On a related subject, I’ve some good material from Spartak in reserve for the days before their visit.

The Annual Remembrance Service, held by the Celtic Supporters’ Association, takes place tomorrow, in memory of Celtic fans no longer with us, with prayers offered for those departed during the last year, including Joe McBride.

The Mass, at St Michael’s at 1350 Gallowgate just up from Parkhead Cross, will start at 12:30 and should be over in around 30 minutes, after which refreshments will be available in the hall to warm you before you head to the game.  All are welcome to celebrate the memory of those who have gone before us.

Lost wedding ring alert! Someone found a wedding ring in Lisbon which was probably dropped by a Celtic fan. Let me know if you know who is walking around with their hand in their pocket this week.

Get your CQN Annual here, an enormous resource from the keyboards of Celtic fans!

    A little knowledge is dangerous.

EBTs are not the reason they are in the Division they are in.

  2. CQN annual has just dropped through the door, looking forward to a good win today, Celtic Park function this evening and my Sunday reading now decided

  3. Don’t get to say this often but I’m like a wean on Christmas morning. Waiting for my wee lassie to get ready so we can make our first pilgrimage to Paradise together. 7 years old and still takes as long to get ready as her mum.

BT, what seats are you in?

  4. On The Brotherhood:

Been a fair bit of talk about possible fraternal influence on the FTT, understandably so.

New Labour passed legislation in 1998 requiring, if memory serves, ‘prospective’ (but not serving? not sure) judges, magistrates and police officers to declare membership of any secret organisation – Freemasons, Big Chief I-SPY tribe etc:)

It was repealed in 2009 by Jack Straw in respect of judges and magistrates, but not police officers, again if memory serves.

This from The Indy at the time:

“Ministry of Justice figures indicate there are 3,808 judges in England and Wales and 205 or 5.4 per cent are Freemasons. There are also 29,702 magistrates, of whom 1,900 or 6.4 per cent are Freemasons.”

I listened to Bernard Hogan-Howe (Commissioner of the Met Police and de facto high heidyin nationwide) being interviewed last week. He stated again his non-membership of any such society, and his strong disapproval of any of his officers being members.

So can anyone tell me if the 1998-2009 legislation was ever on the statute book in Scotland?

And if so were figures such as above ever collated and published?

I’ve never really paid much heed to fraternal influence upon society, but then again I’m not a resident of Scotland, and would be intrigued to compare the England & Wales figures to any available for Scotland.

A 1 in 20 figure for membership does not worry me greatly, I have to say. Would be grateful for any replies from legal insiders past or present.

Looking forward to a refreshed line-up today – as ever NFL’s line-ups are difficult to predict.

  5. What are those numbers that appear on the bottom left of the screen on just about every Sky game. Today’s secret message shows 1136692229?

  6. Sorry Paul, but Paddy ‘the Myth’ McCourt prizing open the ICT defence? Can’t believe he’s still here never mind getting any game time. A legend off the park, Yes, but….

Setting off to Paradise and we will all miss the support from 111 today. I am not qualified to make comment so I won’t. Other than COME ON YOU BOYS IN GREEN. HH.

  8. good to see celtic continue to scout the world looking to pick up young players with potential. we need to get these bhoys signed up when they are between 10 to 21 years old, otherwise the cream are usually picked off. from our perspective its great to have these young players progress with us before they move on, leaving good memories and enough cash to replace them and then some.

so victor, will follow ki out the door and there is every chance hooper will also move on and so on and so forth. i prefer that than watch player after player coming in, taking everything they can get, then moving on for nothing, or filling the first team squad with squad players who take lots but offer next to nothing. if our stock increases with regards our ability/ commitment to nurture quality young players we will attract more quality young player more often.

on kayal. imho, he is a very good player who has been unable to play to his full potential due in the main to injury. when he is up and running he is a class act, but people often forget just how talented a player is when he’s not in the team. a fit, focused and in form kayal is a first pick alongside victor and ledley

  9. Just E-mailed Off The Ball.

    Don’t expect a response.

    Stuart & Tam,

We keep being told, on BBC sports coverage & elsewhere, that Celtic supporters actually miss the games against Rangers & that ‘secretly’ they would like to see them restored.

An anomymous poll conducted by Celtic Quick News on Easypolls, asking just that question, had 1084 responses.

NINENTY NINE % voted against ever wanting ANY game against our former bitterest rivals, now or in the future.

Any chance of correcting the myth that Scottish media has propogated ?

    Thanks.

    hope so.. KTF

    Kilbowie Kelt

did you tell them it was you who voted yes? o))

  11. Kilbowie Kelt hard evidence to support your claim is that the Celtic support paid the same for season ticket renewals in a league without our forever defeated enemies.

  12. I forgot to mention who voted AGAINST.

Is that a sign that DEMENTIA has set in ? :¬)))

    Also mis-spelled NINETY.

I think that answers my own question.
