Paradox for Celtic as Lazio and Rennes both sit third domestically

318

Lazio won their ninth successive Serie A game at the weekend, a club record.  Currently, the second longest winning streak in the league is two games.  They are third in the table, three points off top.  They have not dropped a point since before their first game against Celtic in October, and in that time they beat Juventus in the league and Supercoppa Italiana.

Apart from the two defeats to Celtic, the only other game they have failed to win in this sequence was the Europa dead rubber in Rennes.

Not that Rennes are a pushover.  They have not dropped a point in five Ligue 1 games since their loss at Celtic Park in November, a run that puts them in third place.  By contrast, Moussa Dembele’s Lyon, who are twelfth in Ligue 1, qualified for the Champions League knockout stage.

Were it not for one horrible performance we would be glowing at the halfway point of the season.  We won a remarkable Europa League group, picked up our customary League Cup and sailed through the league campaign until a December, when a few narrow wins were a portent to a painful defeat.  This does not make achieving the improvement that is required easier.  Paradoxically, revisions need to take place on the side that won their Europa group to ensure we improve in the SPFL.

  1. Effectively, this is what the Celtic Statement is saying:

`Of late, opposition players have been allowed to use violence against Celtic players and have escaped any punishment.

In this matter, the SFA are treating us differentlly from other teams. They, the SFA, are being unfair, inconsistent and unfit for purpose. They will be hearing from us.`

What is particularly wrong with that statement ?

  2. I wonder how the players feel.

Frustrated? Cheated? Let down? Supported? Defended? Protected?

I would expect my employer to raise merry hell in such circumstances.

Our future actions will have consequences. I hope we do the right thing

  5. You want change then no point bumping yer gums don’t take tickets for away games or Scottish cup games. Just half a season of that and watch the other clubs suddenly find their voice. In fact a pull out of Scottish cup altogether is fine by me couldn’t give a toss. Let’s focus on the league.

I made the suggestion of blackmail . To have a gentleman’s agreement you first have to have gentlemen .

You may have a point about the reason for the seemingly supine response though .

    Il padrino,

I expect we would be punished for pulling out but I previously suggested we refrain from applying to compete in any national cup competitions the following season.

They cannot make us compete, it would devalue the competitions and make a statement drawing attention and enquires why.

Only problem is reduced income, hence it will never be considered by our Mamoun worshiping executive.

The guy that should to be ‘worried’ is i believe Alistair Johnston.

Alastair Johnston has been on their Board for 30 months. He has never been approved as a ‘fit and proper’ person by the SFA apparently due to the ongoing ‘investigation’ into the 2011 UEFA Licensing process.

A reminder that Celtic plc took the position at the AGM that we should ‘move on’.

Scottish football is corrupt to it’s very core, make no mistake about that.

  12. From @markbanstead

Bonkers how big clubs in Scotland persist in releasing statements/bleating about anything that goes against them. yet again complaints over disciplinary system. If it’s so bad why don’t the same clubs push for change during the summer SFA AGM? It’s always when they feel wronged.

We don’t get fecked over on a weekly basis. I never saw what happened at the game(too high up) so I don’t know if the ban is deserved . No-one noticed during the game, that’s for sure

We have not dropped a single point or let in a goal that wasn’t our fault this season

Blaming refs or our board for poor performances won’t win us the league

More guts and better coaching will

The former is up to the players, the latter is a strange one

Lennon hassled Brown earlier in the season and hooked him once (or twice)

I saw no obvious touch line coaching on 29th, but McGregor moves forward and Brown back midway through 1st half and we improved. Must have been captain decision

I reckon Lennon will be booted if we don’t get 9. Offered Head of Lennoxtiwn if we do. New coach for the 10

I would disagree my friend.i just think it’s tough being a fan of Celtic in this land of reformation.

We have had a nibble of their ‘Neely’ guff since Sir Author of liquidation shat out the cheating hun in an occurrence that was not meant to happen in the sectarian cesspit that is doing big business in masonic Scotland.

  16. Why don’t the elected spokes people at our various Supporter Associations voice the collective frustration ( anger ) at the current corruption we’re seeing via the SFA / SEVCO and their media cheer leaders ?

Surely there would be sufficient numbers to make any targeted boycott of an SFA fixture impactful ?

Also…….can someone tell my what I’m missing in regard to our relations with the media ?

Why do we give them any time / access to our club – we don’t need them and all football matters can be communicated directly via official club sources…….

Alternatively…..why do we not “call out” repeat offenders ( publications ) at our media conferences and correct their inaccurate reporting of any matters related to the club ?

Just another aspect of our current business model that I can’t fully understand!

The Scottish based media have clearly shown where their loyalties lie – again we should publicly call these parasites out !

This is NOT a fight with fair rules so time for us to embark on a guerrilla campaign – why not ( ? ) – what’s to lose – the media are NOT our friends!

    Bring on the revolution!

I take it the writer of that piece is not overly familiar with football in Scotland? Particularly if the other ‘big club’ he refers to are ‘the Rangers’ who will never experience anything going against them while this SFA are in situ.

He has a fair point though about the rest of the clubs being happy to be led by such a dire bunch .

  18. Coneybhoy- I could take an article or a statement from the SMSM weekly to be contested no problem, but you have to pick your battles. We should have banned Leckie,Ralston, Waddell and the like years ago, but they use CP like a brothel, without paying. We have our media outlets, ban the lot of them HH

  19. I am as frustrated as to how we have ended up in this position following events of 29th. I am not sure why we have been quiet until now. I assumed we were ‘keeping our powder dry’ but it seems not so. This is very frustrating all round I get that.

However I am unclear has anyone come up with a realistic approach the Celtic board can take to this specific current issue ?

Lots of blame the board and rattled being thrown out of prams from keyboard hard men.

No real answers as to the simple question of what to do in this case.

  20. In football, as in life, you get treated the way you allow others to treat you.

This is a red herring. Let me explain my view.

Every complaint we’ve made since 29th can and has been laughed off as sour grapes and our bottle crashing.

As Hot Smoked and a few others have noted, a strong case could be made against RC on the basis of the tv pictures. And as soon as it was gleefully highlighted by the pundits, this became inevitable. You could argue justifiable.

For CFC to comment now about Morelos doing similar in the past sounds like bleating and will be dismissed as such. Because the time to take a stand was WHEN it happened. But in truth, I sense our board’s only understanding of a ‘stand’ in a structure full of seats that enable them to make money.

The war off the park is lost. In truth, for us it never started given the craven nature of the club’s custodians. It can only be won with the 9 IAR and I pray, the 10.

  23. Celtic care not a jot about res 12 or Ryan Christie’s ban.

It’s all deflection to take our minds off the fact that they are in real danger of blowing 10 nro.

From a position where only grave incompetence could allow it to happen.

  24. A few questions.

Who decided Eboue Kouassi was a player?

Who decided Bayo was a player?

Who decided that Bolingoli was a player?

Who decided that Morgan was a player?

    By player I mean .

Good enough to hold down a regular place in the Celtic first team and perform consistently well at a European standard that allows us to qualify for the CL or go deep in the EL.

  25. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Posted earlier from @RhebelRhebel

“Celtic and Scottish football had the chance to gut the @ScottisFA over their handling of the EBT scandal and the transfer of Rangers’ licence to Sevco’s shifty profiteers”

    Celtic took the lead.

The others basically said “That’s right, you are Spartacus mate. Gain yersel”

Laudable posts tonight on a common theme.

Celtic fans just need to refuse to attend away matches or matches at neutral venues for half a season and this starts to get fixed.
