  1. CultsBhoy- Last of the famous international PlayBhoys on

Notions of Celtic somehow being bankrolled by American billionaires beggars belief.

As long as we meet teams like Ross County and Hamilton domestically we are destined to be gallant no hopes in Europe. Reality.

  2. CultsBhoy- Last of the famous international PlayBhoys on

We are in a great place despite last night’s result. We are rubbing shoulders with the elite, not quite part of it but we are invited to the party. I due course we will be expected to attend regularly.

It might not feel like progress but we’ve come a reasonably long way.

… And the money we are pocketing does two things. It keeps Huns at bay and it allows us to grow on and off the field of play.

That becomes a self perpetuating virtuous cycle.

Lets take our medicine for now… It be worth it in the years to come.

  3. Morning all.

I must be getting old. In times past, after last night’s result, I would have been tossing and turning all night. Now, I can get my “beauty” sleep. Maybe I expected we would get hammered.

I know we need to be facing such opposition regularly to be able to give the likes of PSG a game. Can’t see it happening unless we move to a more competitive league. That won’t be the likes of the EPL. Atlantic League of some kind??

  4. INVINCIBLE ‘GG on 23RD NOVEMBER 2017 2:44 AM

After losing 5-0 to PSG, we beat Ross County 4-0.

After losing 3-0 to Bayern, we beat Hibs 4-2.

After losing 2-1 to Bayern, we beat St Johnstone 4-0.

Anyone want to lay money on us scoring 4 on Sunday?

    ………………….

    Good shout mate…although I will also have another bet …Celtic – 7 v Mudderwell _ 1

  5. 5 at the back, 7/8 at the back wouldn’t have mattered that was one mean machine we played last night, but it’s manna from heaven for the malcontents, Huns, and board hating moaners who just love these nights as it suits their agenda, and that of course is your right, as I said last night, winning the SPFL and and qualifying for the group stages, then the Europa league is our whack your kidding yourself if you think we are among the elite in Europe I’m afraid your in LaLa land, last four in the Europa league at best, anything else is a bonus, it is a possibility that we are knocking a pot three team out of Europe as well! But then again there I go picking out a positive (silly me) we had our day in the sun, and I for one still enjoy it, winning the league here every year suits me just fine, I know where my teams bench mark is and I’m enjoying every minute of it, getting humped like we did last night wasent enjoyable obviously, but some times you just have to put your hands up to quality, three things I am not, gullible, malcontent, or a Hun, if I was? I’d need to go to another blog, because this place is full of them, HH COYBIG & GIRFUY.

Welcome to the world of the wee diddy team.

The CL is a rigged competition run by a corrupt organisation but as long as we know our place that’s ok. Is it? Really?

Shocking attitude for someone who I guess (like me) was weaned through the Lisbon Lion era.

  7. TD67 so the blog is full of malcontents, you even accused me of being one, since then I’ve taken a lot of your posts with a pinch of salt. Granted there are some “malcontents” on here but they are far outweighed by the genuine and decent posters. For what it’s worth I just want the best for Celtic, just like you H H Hebcelt

    new defenders needed too

  9. Morning all

Woke up feeling okay then remembered last night. I was asked at work what I thought was a realistic objective and I said to score and to lose by less than in Glasgow. We did score but at 10 to go we were staring at double figures. There aew things which can be said in our defence- having to field a centre back who had not played in 8 weeks was not ideal and then losing Mikael L so early on was horrendous. Nir Bitton is no right back but I doubt Christian G would have done any better. Mikael would have though.

I thought Moussa D and James F were fine but after a good first 20 minutes- Olivier N was not a million miles away from putting us 2-1 -up- we collapsed. Overarching all of this is the realisation that PSG is, now, as good a team as we have ever faced. I am not sure any team we have had since 1974 would have done any better.

Will we learn anything from last night? No. Possibly they are too far ahead anyway but in the last 45 years managers have said we would learn from our mistakes and then the next game against any sort of quality we are gifting them the ball in dangerous positions whilst when they err we are not as clinical as they are.

I think in a group in which 3rd place is our most realistic target- as it has been in our last 3 CL campaigns – what I look for is a feeling we are a better team than we were compared to a year earlier and at the outset of the games themselves. If we get third place that is obviously good but my feeling is we are no better than before – possibly worse. And I did not think that would be the case.

    Sorry for the gloom.

I was weaned on The Lisbon Lions…are you suggesting that because Celtic get gubbed twice by a team costing approx £700 MILLION…we should just chuck it ?

Please provide advice on where Celtic can raise or get £700 MILLION in order to compete ?

As for the CL being corrupt etc…you are right….but do you support Celtic in domestic games, cos IF you do…are those SFA and SPFL competitions also not corrupt….so why “support” Celtic in those competitions ?

  11. The level of the defeat still hurts this morning, evn though it was as predictable as our odds of 28/1 to win this tie. It is understandable that some will hit out at the players as we all saw them making mistakes, trying too hard, making poor judgements, being too brave, and generally being outshone and outclassed.

We can imagine, in the unreality of our own heads, that a visionary manager like ourself, could have snatched a draw or a breakaway single goal victory by employing the revolutionary tactics of a Craig Levein and parking the bus, commiting regular fouls (hoping the ref was blind and could not count), and hoofing the ball away in any direction as long as it was cleared long.

We can imagine, with the stellar sporting careers that we have all enjoyed that our players played with nothing but fear in their armoury. We can explain away that all those attempts to play the ball around at the back, to build up play, to make supporting runs, to bridge the gap between Moussa and the hard-pressed midfield, and to attempt higher risk slip passes in the final third, were all just evidence of blind panic and weak confidence. We can proclaim that our domestic invincibles are just a sham.

But the evidence just isn’t there, or what evidence that there is being misattributed and made to squeeze into the explanation we want to make seem more convincing.

Teams that are scared and over-awed by opposition behave in fairly predictable ways; we have all seen it with some of our opposition teams at Celtic Park. Individual players will allow themselves to be dragged out to man mark a player away from where the action is so that they are not in the vicinity of said action when the blame is to be handed out for a missed tackle or a goal conceded. Players will hoof the ball aimlessly to show that, at least they are trying to clear danger, even though their play makes it likely that the attack they cleared will be coming right back at them in seconds as they concede possession too lightly. They will play back passes that put others in trouble rather than attempt to play a higher risk ball forwards (Brendan allows, and indeed encourages, back and sideways passing as a means of keeping possession and re-cycling the point of attack but others will overlook all the evidence of Forrest and Ntcham being brave in taking the ball forward and being crowded out by 4 energetic PSG defenders and only recall their pass back incidences to support this thesis). And finally, genuinely fearful players will run around and make themselves look busy but will find ways of being out of the main action area when the danger threatens. They will look like they are doing a job of work but will not risk going anywhere or taking part in any action where they might be made to look inferior. They will not risk success for fear of failure.

But merely declaring that you just need to be mentally tougher is the easy armchair jibe. I can work myself into a convincing state of delusion with regards to my abilities but sport is a great deliverer of doses of realism. There is no hiding place when your opponent is better than you. Graft, hard tackling, concentration, sticking to the game plan and being part of a unit, all help in attempts to minimise the gap but they rarely change the equation and the other team remains more talented than you and, if focused, better than you. That happened with PSG last night, even though we were better going forward than in our lesser defeat at CP.

When Scott Brown played a poor ball to Ntcham at goal one, it was not the act of a fearful player; if anything he was over-confident in his passing ability and could have done with some “fear” to make him more cautious (but then he would not be the Broony we know). When Mikel Lustig saw the attack develop at goal one, he rushed to support his less experienced colleague, Boyata, cope with the danger of the guy he was marking. In doing so, he left an easy pass on to Neymar, whom he should have stayed with and he could not get back in time when he realised his error. Not even Mikel’s biggest critic could mistake that attempt to aid Boyata as a guy filled with fear. Error of judgement, fair enough, but he did not leave the area of action- he just mistook, by a few yards, where he needed to be.

I saw a Celtic team outclassed and well outperformed and there is plenty of the performance that can be analysed and critiqued professionally ( so please, no whiny complaints about being denied the right to criticise) but fear, irrational or rational, does not explain the performance that we saw.

I cn catch any replies this evening.

  14. Cultsbhoy,

Some good points that iare hard to argue with.

    Nye Bevin,

“Are Celtic being all they can be “

    ————————-

    No , I don’t think we are.

Every player last night has played international football. Indeed Lustig, Rogic and Boyata are going to the World Cup.

Is the fact that five of out initial line up have been associated with Scotland’s dismal World Cup qualifiers a contributing factor ?. I don’t know but attitude and belief are vital.

For a team jam packed with international players we are definitely not being all we can be.

Putting aside financial disparity in Scotland ‘ how many teams have international players in their line up. ? Is it too easy for some players where poor performances will normally go unpunished. I don’t think we have totally lost the ability to raise our game, but sometimes it seems like that.

Yes we got hammered last night, but a not to bad performance was compromised by schoolboy errors.

Not for the first time I suggest that maybe we need physiological coaching to install a belief in ourselves .

  15. Hey ho –

Greetings from an overcast Paris -10 degrees -rain forecast for later .

Last night ? – Expected to lose — the pecking order etc . .. Watched it with sad resignation -unlike say – shipping five to Neuchatel Xamax / Artmedia.( both of those still bug me )

Nantes gave them more of a game than Celtic — Nantes lost 4-1. . Nantes didn’t ball watch and were much better at passing the ball than Celtic . Celtic really have to stop giving the ball away -get away with it v the likes of Ross County but pay the price v quality opposition .PSG are a really good team but I am not convinced they will win it . Bit slack at the back and a bit prone to not paying attention to the opposition . Celtic’s goal -a case in point –likewise the goal Nantes scored 90 euros got me a seat with lots of middle class chaps and their women and weans. Football as entertainment .Great shift again from Verratti -he really makes them tick

IMO. We need a new goalkeeper ASAP Craig is a liability to the team

We need a ball playing pacey centre back

  17. When the draw was made many would have bit your hand off for third in the group, now today? It’s not good enough? Am I happy with third place,? dam right I am, do I know celtics place in Europe? Yes! Europa league and playing in Europe after Christmas that’ll do me, others think Celtic should be in the last sixteen, not a matter of who is right or wrong, it’s a matter of fact, it looks like Europa cup, people asking me am I happy with this? Seriously?

    Well said that man.

I like a punt on the horses most days……in recent years along comes a true Champion like “Frankel”…..when Frankel was racing…I certainly didn’t expect anything less than for Frankel to mollykate the opposition !

Even last night our own Celtic Warrior young Tierney was getting caught out and beaten for pace…..do Celtic now tell KT….”Your no very good son…we have to let you go ” ?

    HH

  19. It would appear some think we should accept our place in the game, accept drubbings by pot 1and 2 teams.Strachan and Lennon didn’t accept this and no one was complaining when we beat Man Utd and Barcelona by playing a different style of football.I don’t want us to park the bus in away games I just want us to be more difficult to beat.Scott Brown giving the ball away for the first goal, three players against one from a cross into the box, these are basic errors. We played into their hands we can’t go toe to toe playing a passing game against a team with such quality.Brendan has been brilliant for Celtic but he is not immune from criticism and I just don’t see other than the obvious what positives can come from being beaten 7-0,5-0 and 7-1.

  20. Brendan – Wonderful!

The pub team skelping “Invicibles” – Wonderful!

Best fans / board in the world – Wonderful!

    Throw me a fish CSC

    Dear, dear,……

    ….off oot,….tae wur nixt skelpin ;

    ….oot.

  21. We need a keeper and two centre halfs over the next two windows. Add a right back the manager has said we need then that will be four new faces in the back five positions for next season’s participation in CL (if we get there). Since taking over 18 months ago he hasn’t signed any centre halfs, other than Toure who was a short term quick fix. He has worked with and tried to improve, with some success, what he inherited. They are not going to get any better, it’s time to sign players he identifies as being able to play the way he wants.

  22. Not knowing your place in the CL and not having the gelt to get you in that place is a reality, things that malcontents and Huns just don’t get, enjoy the trebles the being in Europe after Christmas, the going back to Lenny and Strachan got to the last 16, aye we know that, I’m a Celtic supporter a know my teams history, but I’m dealing with the here and now, and by the way, even when Lenny and Strachan got to the last sixteen, they where still moaning, so don’t be kidding yourself on, try and enjoy being Tim ffs, honestly it’s not hard, unless of course your a Hun?

  23. T D. ,I want Celtic to do well. ,but like a lot of supporters,we are entitled,to have our say about the performance of our team, but if you are critical of the team, then you are Hun, well I’m certainly not,

Whilst the outcome last night was never in doubt, tactics are a big influence on whether you lose 3 or 4 and whether you lose 7 going on 8 or 9.

This is our tenth time in the Champions league group stage and these wallopings have only become a feature in recent times.

The difference is that at the moment we are far too open and trying to play these world class sides at their own game.

So yes Tony, the tactics and the fine details do matter, they make a huge difference.

Its hard to watch and if we don’t learn our lesson it will happen again and maybe worse.

Essentially you have to keep the full backs as close to the CB’s as possible at all times, and 5 across the midfield chasing everything that moves(not a night for McGregor). If the chance arises they can support the one up top.

Tactics matter Tony. Otherwise Barnes would have been a success. Likewise Mowbray and Deila.

Brendan has nailed it domestically but we can’t be going to PSG and trying to play expansive football. Adapt to the circumstances and keep it respectable next time.

I didn’t say they had not got the right many are reading my post a wee bit to fast, and missing an important paragraph.

5 at the back, 7/8 at the back wouldn’t have mattered that was one mean machine we played last night, but it’s manna from heaven for the malcontents, Huns, and board hating moaners who just love these nights as it suits their agenda, and that of course is your right, as I said last night

  26. TRADITIONALIST 88

Of corse tactics matter, and so does money, I’m not one of these guys who picks teams before games or after games, (and I don’t have a problem with that) but that’s Brendan Rogers job as far as I’m concerned, some in here get a wee bit carried away with themselves thinking they know better, there’s only one Brendan Rogers, I’m happy with things, but that’s just me.

  27. Anyone else think that BR’s comments about PSG having no footballing heritage ( I paraphrase) annoyed them a bit?

He’s right though. They are nothing but the footballing wing of the state of Qatar.

The game of football is diminished by clubs like PSG.

  28. You can bet that BR will go over last nights game with a fine tooth comb, and with the players to analyse the rights and wrongs. What got me was the level of fitness of PSG. When a Celtic player had the ball they swarmed round him. Whether or not they can play so well again we will have to see. If Celtic were in any of the other groups they would stand a chance—how come EPL mall,I’dems gets,to eaier draws. Leicester, anyone?

  29. traditionalist88 on

    tonydonnelly67 on 23rd November 2017 9:53 am

The upturn in our fortunes has been incredible on and off the pitch since Brendan came in.

But there are a few warning signs we need to heed. We walked a tightrope away to Beer Sheva and Astana despite having been in great positions. We’re far too open against teams that are on another planet.

But even those teams can be stifled. Losing 3 or 4 you can live with but last night and the home tie were demoralising. And it could have been worse.

Domestically in France, PSG average 3.3 goals per game. In two games against us, they got 12! No one was that surprised.

The annoying thing is we are not that bad. But everybody else now thinks we are, because we didnt play to stifle them and put them off their stride. Too many of the goals required very little work/movement from PSG and thats because tactically we got it wrong.

    HH

  30. Well that was a sore wan. But how good were PSG? The confidence just oozed out of them, cant see anyone stopping them winning the CL this year, certainly no English based team will do it. They are a class apart, we done well to keep the score low.

  31. My Celtic Supporting mate texted me this after the game.

This PSG side beat Barcelona 5-1 in Paris last year & have invested 300 million in the team since then.

Just think about that for a minute.

I actually thought that we played quite well at stages last night & had a decent penalty shout before the break.

Like the first game when they got 2 late goals, they also hit us with a whirlwind 3 late on last night.

A lot of the big teams would have eased off but these guys don’t.

I feel sick about the scoreline after the 2 games, I also feel sick by the reaction of some of the posters here.

Some smart arses just trying to be clever.

In one night a team that has won the treble gone 64 games unbeaten at home are vulnerable & yes guys who have been great did make mistakes, guys like Tierney, Brown & Boyata to name just 3.

Some CQN ‘Supporters’ take the opportunity to mock them, calling them flat track bullies & pub team skelpers.

AS I say, I’m hurting this morning and I am painfully aware that we are well out of our depth in the Champions League & unless there is a major change in how Football is run on a European level, nights like last night will happen again.

  32. TRADITIONALIST 88

So basically the tactics at the back are Park the bus and lose 4/5-0 , for a start, we don’t have the personnel to park the bus it’s not our game, nor is it PSGs game going toe to toe didn’t bother me it’s a win win for attackin football, not for the team that’s getting humped, but it is good for the game, did we learn from it? Sunday will tell us if we did or didn’t, Brendan’s tactics may have us playing in Europe after Christmas, I’m happy with that.

  33. TONYDONNELLY67 on 23RD NOVEMBER 2017 9:01 AM

    M6 BHOY

    it is what it is.

    ———————————————————————————————————–

But it doesn’t have to be. There is an alternative.

No amount of CL largesse is worth these ritual humiliations in my opinion. I stopped watching any CL football a few season ago as I could see which way Uefa and the elite clubs were taking this once proud competition. I could barely bring myself to look up the score last night never mind put myself through the agony of watching it unfold. Respect to those who did but I don’t like watching car crashes.

Until the rest of Europe wakens up to the fact that the CL is a rigged competition run by a corrupt self-serving organisation then nothing will change except the elite clubs will get richer and stronger and the rest will be lambs to the slaughter. I genuinely can’t understand why any fan outside the elite clubs has any interest in the competition never mind pay to help sustain it. Utter and complete madness.

There is an alternative. If the the rest of Europe woke up the fact that Uefa’s fat cats and elite clubs need us more than we need them and then acted as a united bloc then things would change for the better. It really us that simple. We, as one of the bigger clubs outside the elite could take the lead by building alliances with other clubs faced with the same dire predicament. This is not walking away, it’s fighting back against the establishment and it’s the Celtic Way. Thank god the Lisbon Lions and the Irish immigrants to Scotland didn’t think, “..it is what it is…”

Till then TD, you can continue to pretend that being regularly shafted by the elite clubs is worth the crumbs from the rich man’s table. Playing in the CL is fast becoming the football equivalent of prostitution for the vast majority of its participants.

“it is what it is”. – you should be ashamed.
