Parma liquidation precedent would work against Rangers

1018

We have spoken before that preliminary positions are being established ahead of the much-anticipated outcome of HM Revenue and Customs tribunal against Rangers with the possibility that, in the event the decision goes in favour of HMRC, the company could go into liquidation.  This weekend brought a fresh attempt to pitch a positive scenario in favour of Rangers.

One newspaper sought solace in the case Parma, stating that the Italian club was allowed to re-emerge in Serie A after going out of business in 2004.

Unfortunately this is a complete misrepresentation of the facts, as far as Parma is concerned, precedent points to an entirely different outcome.  Parma went into administration on 28 April 2004 after Parmalat, the dairy company which owned a majority of their shares, also went into administration.  Parma remained in administration for three years before emerging after a successful restructuring of their debts.  The club was then bought by a new company – but crucially – continuity of football operations was possible because there was no liquidation and debts were restructured in a way consistent with prevailing administration laws, that allowed a company to continue trading.

This, however, is not the end of the precedent Parma can offer Neil Doncaster and his SPL board.  In 1968 AC Parma went into liquidation and disappeared from existence.  They are an ex-football club, to use a phrase I can see creeping into the local lexicon soon.

Shortly after the failure and permanent disappearance of AC Parma, another club, AC Parmense, who were newly promoted into Sere D, changed their livery to match their better known former-neighbours and changed name to AC Parma.  It was this club, AC Parma-formerly-known-as-AC Parmenese, who were promoted through the divisions and went on to win three European trophies.

Precedent from Italy is clear: if a large SPL club is liquidated an opportunity exists for Clyde FC to change their name, ditch the white shirts, rent a large, vacant, stadium and try to work their way through the leagues. Just as Airdrie United-formerly-known-as-Clydebank, are attempting to do.

There are no free tickets to the elite level of Scottish football.

Exclusive: New Bhoy Rabiu’s first Celtic interview

By: Mark Henderson on 23 Jan, 2012 14:45

RABIU Ibrahim has long harboured ambitions at joining Celtic– and he couldn’t contain his excitement after the move finally came to fruition.

The gifted Nigerian youngster agreed a three-and-a-half-year with the club last week, and the final hurdle to the move was cleared on Monday afternoon when he was granted a work permit.

After rising to prominence during his exceptional displays at youth level for his country, he was tracked by many of Europe’s top clubs. He eventually joined Sporting Lisbon, before embarking on a spell at PSV Eindhoven.

The 20-year-old revealed that during that time, he’d also been aware of Celtic’s interest. Delighted at now becoming a Bhoy, he believed he was at the right club to realise his undoubted potential.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, Ibrahim said: “I feel very happy and excited to be joining Celtic. I have always wanted to join Celtic for a long time to develop myself.

“They were interested in me in 2010 when I was with Sporting Lisbon. I don’t know why that never happened but that was then and I’m happy now that I’m here at Celtic.

“I started at U17 in Nigeria and after that I left for Sporting Lisbon and spent there years over there, and today I’m here with Celtic and I’m delighted to be here.

“The atmosphere here is great, and the people are great. They are always nice to me and encouraging me,” he added. “So I already feel at home.

“The players have made me feel welcome and happy. It’s just like a big family here. They carry everybody along, and I’m happy with that.

“I’m delighted as Celtic are a big club – they like good players, produce good players and encourage and give the young players the opportunity to prove themselves and showcase their talents.

“So I’m happy that I’m here and strongly believe that I will get the opportunity to prove myself and improve my game.”

A skilful and creative midfielder, Ibrahim also impressed Neil Lennon during a week he spent with the club, performing impressively in a bounce game against St Johnstone, and the manager moved swiftly to secure his signature.

“I felt very okay because I played as if I was with the team for a long time,” the Nigerian said. “I felt relaxed. The players are very good and talented so they made it easy for me. They know what to do at the right time and that’s why I played very good.

“I’m a creative player and a good passer who will create a lot of chances. But I’m also a hardworking player who will work for the team and I’m hoping to help the team win more trophies, starting this season.”

And the manager’s positive approach, particularly among the younger members of the side, was one reason why Ibrahim was keen to take up residence in Paradise.

“He’s a great coach and he encourages young players, and since I came in he has been encouraging me,” explained the new Bhoy. “Any time I make a good pass or move, he always says something good to me, so that makes me feel very happy and at home.”

Aware of the Celtic’s traditional attacking philosophy and illustrious history, Ibrahim is keen to break into the top-team and help them achieve further success.

“I love the way the club plays football – they play passing, attacking football and try to win every game,” he added.

“They want to be on top always and win so many trophies and they are still fighting to win trophies this season and I want to be there among the players when they do that.”

@StewartRegan So the governing body of football in Scotland would abdicate its role in the face of falsification of player contracts?

Take from that what you will but it doesn’t seem like he wants to know. I have some sympathy for Regan. He took on a difficult job unhelped due to previous practices and regimes and has tried to sort out some problems but this one is rather complicated.

Apologies to the poster who raised it earlier today, concerning the decision by the SFA to move next season’s Scottish Cup Final to a Sunday, May 26 2013 in fact. Actually, according to the SFA this is due to UEFA banning national finals on the same day as the Champions League Final. Now, as things stand, I do not know if said explanation is true or not, but I suspect the truth is a little bit closer to home, namely Hampden Park. Now, it just so happens that the 2013 final is back at Wembley Stadium as part of the 150th anniversary of the Football Association, with a now established evening kick-off, something I support. If however the Scottish Cup Final was played on the same Saturday afternoon in Glasgow, and no reason why not, it would be a real struggle for the bigwigs at the SFA (I am not including Gordon Smith here) to make it down to London in time for the CL extravaganza, free booze, five star hotels, meet Hugh Dallas, with a quick trip to Soho thrown in. They would be lucky to have time to pick Justice Minister Kenny McAskill out of whatever gutter he might be rolling around in at the time. Now, I have long been an advocate of weekend European Football, especially Saturday evenings, but it cannot be at the expense of a Saturday afternoon Scottish Cup Final. I might be open to persuasion though, the 2013 Champions League Final takes place on May 25! Tell the SFA to hold on to the Scottish Cup,…..until we get back!

  18. Must admit, as much as I love James Forrest and the creative element he brings to the team, 7million would be difficult to turn down.

Could help us buy either a 3m or 4m centre half or striker for the run in or for next season.

Personally, I think we could win the title with the squad we have right now. Possibly even without James Forrest.

“When you are trying to kill a story you must avoid being tied down on something specific, a fact or a detail that will give it another lease of life for a reporter who is digging”.
