Parma liquidation precedent would work against Rangers

1018

We have spoken before that preliminary positions are being established ahead of the much-anticipated outcome of HM Revenue and Customs tribunal against Rangers with the possibility that, in the event the decision goes in favour of HMRC, the company could go into liquidation.  This weekend brought a fresh attempt to pitch a positive scenario in favour of Rangers.

One newspaper sought solace in the case Parma, stating that the Italian club was allowed to re-emerge in Serie A after going out of business in 2004.

Unfortunately this is a complete misrepresentation of the facts, as far as Parma is concerned, precedent points to an entirely different outcome.  Parma went into administration on 28 April 2004 after Parmalat, the dairy company which owned a majority of their shares, also went into administration.  Parma remained in administration for three years before emerging after a successful restructuring of their debts.  The club was then bought by a new company – but crucially – continuity of football operations was possible because there was no liquidation and debts were restructured in a way consistent with prevailing administration laws, that allowed a company to continue trading.

This, however, is not the end of the precedent Parma can offer Neil Doncaster and his SPL board.  In 1968 AC Parma went into liquidation and disappeared from existence.  They are an ex-football club, to use a phrase I can see creeping into the local lexicon soon.

Shortly after the failure and permanent disappearance of AC Parma, another club, AC Parmense, who were newly promoted into Sere D, changed their livery to match their better known former-neighbours and changed name to AC Parma.  It was this club, AC Parma-formerly-known-as-AC Parmenese, who were promoted through the divisions and went on to win three European trophies.

Precedent from Italy is clear: if a large SPL club is liquidated an opportunity exists for Clyde FC to change their name, ditch the white shirts, rent a large, vacant, stadium and try to work their way through the leagues. Just as Airdrie United-formerly-known-as-Clydebank, are attempting to do.

There are no free tickets to the elite level of Scottish football.

happy to expand, rangers football at foundation and for some 30 years thereafter were not tagged as a particularly protestant team, nor did they operate policies of not signing catholics.the change came about early in the century when a element of workers with a northern irish heritage adopted the club as there own and so it all began. ulsters red hand has been on display amongst the rangers support ever since.thats the northern irish element the club and scottish society can do without. the club has become a focal point for unionist and orange activity. no club and they can take it somewhere else, linfield perhaps.

as to your comment as to wether i am a hun, i find a tad offensive, given my irish family background and 20 years a season ticket holder.

my point, had you read and understood the post, was that celtics board had to consider the bigger picture for there support in not having to live amongst bigots, instead of worrying about ashort term tv deals.

Having read your contributions in the past,it seems to me that your points should be addressed with courtesy, in what I have always felt was the Glasgow Celtic way.

With respect,I feel you have failed to grasp the essential difference between Rangers and Celtic as institutions.

Your whole argument suggests that it is for the good of Celtic that Rangers survive.

That is the financial good of Celtic.

You are, of course, perfectly correct.

Self interest is the key to your argument.

Celtic , however, were founded to look after the interests of others.

I will take no joy from the sadness felt by decent people whose allegiance to a football team was determined by an accident of birth. The Edward Ursuses of this world.

I would, however, take great comfort in seeing the back of an institution whose basic premise and raison d`etre has been anti-catholicism ,and worse than that,anti-catholic.

    The orange lodge at play.

Are Celtic supporters purer than the driven snow?

    Not in the slightest.

Our club, our institution,on the other hand has never given me cause for anything other than pride.

Your club, your institution should cause you shame.

    Rangers……..Depart from me ye cursed.

Scotland will be all the better for your absence.

With your scenario of rangers paying their tax bill on the never never, what is to sytop them from not accepting that option as it wouldnt fit with the MBBs game plan (if there realy is one).

    —————————————-

I think HMRC could live with that. Not so sure the Rangers support could if the option was going out of business with no alternative.

I reckon the SFA/SPL would be gobsmacked at such a refusal where acceptance would take them off the Newco hook – to such an extent they might block Newco entry – at all.

In fact if HMRC were thinking of calling CW’s bluff, I think the SFA/SPL would not be unhappy at seeing CW exposed as the chancer he appears to be by such a wrong footing offer.

  13. Good article Paul67.

But if it isn’t Parma, it will be some ex-team in Bosnia, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, or the Central African Republic whose “precedent” the SPL will be “studying” and “looking to learn from”…

Had to laugh that Doncaster picked Italy as a model of good administration!

However: remember this: this coin has 2 sides. Football administration is only one side. HMRC and HM Government (all stand!) will have a say in what the wee castle-dwelling, roofless, googly-eyed billionaire can get away with…

  14. CentenaryBhoy

There is no need to sell Forrest at this time in his career unless an absolutely mind blowing bid comes in, and that would have to be £20Million+.

His value is only going to rise and I’d rather he spent a good part of his career at Celtic rather than cash in on him at the earliest opportunity. The young man is going to get better and better and spending the next 4 or 5 years with a re-emerging Celtic in Europe will be the best possible career path IMO.

There is no need to take risks at this stage of the season when we have got ourselves into a good position and that means keeping every player who has been involved in the first half of the season. We must win this League this season and rather than weakening the squad we should be bringing in a strong target man in January.

We’d be absolutely mad to sell James Forrest right now.

Apart from the fact he is an integral part of the team and the league is still there to be won, I don’t think we appreciate just what a talent he is, and could be.

He’s been picked out by FIFA as one of the top youngsters IN THE WORLD GAME. He has been selected for the GB team at the Olympics. He is an electrifying presence in our team.

We’ll have to come to terms with losing him sooner or later, but when you think about the fees commanded by the likes of Henderson and Downing, James Forrest has to be worth at least £20m right now, and he’s only getting started.

No way should we be even thinking about selling James Forrest any time soon.

  23. Auldheid,

Has there been any move by the various Celtic supporter organisations to canvas the opinions of their members with reference to the various scenarios which could result from the RTC?

If, as I believe, the majority would be for the integrity of Scottish football to be upheld (reinstated), could those results be passed on to Celtic to reinforce what, I hope, would be their stance.

I think the Supporter Associations would be a good barometer, especially if each club member was balloted, en route to a match perhaps.
