Parma liquidation precedent would work against Rangers

1018

We have spoken before that preliminary positions are being established ahead of the much-anticipated outcome of HM Revenue and Customs tribunal against Rangers with the possibility that, in the event the decision goes in favour of HMRC, the company could go into liquidation.  This weekend brought a fresh attempt to pitch a positive scenario in favour of Rangers.

One newspaper sought solace in the case Parma, stating that the Italian club was allowed to re-emerge in Serie A after going out of business in 2004.

Unfortunately this is a complete misrepresentation of the facts, as far as Parma is concerned, precedent points to an entirely different outcome.  Parma went into administration on 28 April 2004 after Parmalat, the dairy company which owned a majority of their shares, also went into administration.  Parma remained in administration for three years before emerging after a successful restructuring of their debts.  The club was then bought by a new company – but crucially – continuity of football operations was possible because there was no liquidation and debts were restructured in a way consistent with prevailing administration laws, that allowed a company to continue trading.

This, however, is not the end of the precedent Parma can offer Neil Doncaster and his SPL board.  In 1968 AC Parma went into liquidation and disappeared from existence.  They are an ex-football club, to use a phrase I can see creeping into the local lexicon soon.

Shortly after the failure and permanent disappearance of AC Parma, another club, AC Parmense, who were newly promoted into Sere D, changed their livery to match their better known former-neighbours and changed name to AC Parma.  It was this club, AC Parma-formerly-known-as-AC Parmenese, who were promoted through the divisions and went on to win three European trophies.

Precedent from Italy is clear: if a large SPL club is liquidated an opportunity exists for Clyde FC to change their name, ditch the white shirts, rent a large, vacant, stadium and try to work their way through the leagues. Just as Airdrie United-formerly-known-as-Clydebank, are attempting to do.

There are no free tickets to the elite level of Scottish football.

so in a nutshell then, it would be over more so if the New Company, the Govan Strangers, were doon there as well.

With a trial for tax evasion at Southwark Crown Court starting today, Harry Redknapp is hardly likely to be doing his usual wheeling and dealing this week, know what I mean? And anyway, he already has Aaron Lennon so why would he want to sign Forrest? We need all our first choice and first team players if we want to win the league, all of them!

  5. We sold Aiden McGeady for about 9.5m, he was a more established first team player- more or less the finished article.

James Forrest possibly has the same potential as Aiden, with tendencies to float in and out of games more than even Aiden did.

I think asking for 15m is a bit too much. Spurs wouldn’t pay that, I’m not sure who would pay that.

If he wants to stay and help win the title, then that’s fantastic. I’m making the point that I believe 7million would be a decent price for a young player who still has a lot to prove.

  6. Guys, been reading through the responses to my question about Spain/ Basque Country/ Lisbon – places to visit – from yesterday. Been hectic busy today so sorry for the delay but a big THANKS to all of you for your ideas, comments, advice. Muchos thankos. Will get a better read of it later tonight. Too many names to thank individually but my appetite is whetted for the Basque Country. Hope I can afford it!

    Cheers

  7. I’d also like to state that, for the sake of wee Forrest’s development, I hope it isn’t Spurs we sell him to.

They have a record of buying young players such as Kyle Naughton, Chris Gunter, even the likes of Alan Hutton and David Bentley, and not giving them time to re-produce the form for which they bought him.

I can already envisage the wee man going down there and struggling for first team opportunities and then being loaned out to a Sheffield United or Blackpool.

  9. If Rangers go into administration, points deducted, demotion to 3rd division etc. Could SFA and SPL not just restructure the league to two divisions?

  10. from the beeb:

Mr Redknapp, 64, of Poole, Dorset, who underwent minor heart surgery last year to unblock his arteries, is the most successful English manager in the modern game, having led Portsmouth to FA Cup success and Spurs to last season’s Uefa Champions League quarter-finals.

  11. Centenary Bhoy / MWD

Every player has his price, and in recent years we have had several players whom we should have sold at their peak – Lee Naylor ?

In the case of James F , if we want to win the league, there are only 5 maybe 6 players whom I think are irreplaceable – FF, Victor, Charlie, Broonie , Hoops and James F in the short term.

(for clarity I am not saying these guys are irreplaceable ad finitum)

Selling James F and using the cash to buy a striker wouldn’t necessarily be productive, as he is the Bhoy to supply the crosses. If on the other hand we had a guy who could attack James’ crosses, it would be worth 2 or 3 goals minimum in the next 14 games.

  17. been thinking about life after rangers, oh god please, would it be bad or good remains unanswered

    we would lose;

    games vs them

    reduced t.v money

    reduced sponsorship money (maybe)

    reduced competition for league

    potentially reduced squad spend

    things we gain;

no need to set up league to ‘fit’ 4 glasgow derbies per season for t.v

no more 35 man squads for celtic

more opportunity to reduce prices for fans

more potential for young players to get into first team

opportunity to use income generated to spend to get celtic triangle built, whilst still winning.

more opportunity for other clubs to challenge

no more hate filled songs i.e. BJK or UKFB

i actually think it would be best if they were gone forever, but if its a start up club newco then its a case of start at division 3 and work your way up.

all the above would apply for minimum 3 years with the added bonus that many clubs throughout the divisions would receive huge income due to large travelling ranger’s support, which could have a massive and positive impact on just about every club they face for three years.

I’m reminded of an old pub quiz question. What 3 senior UK soccer team names contains, ahem, words that would fail a mod filter?

Answer:- Scunthorpe, Arsenal and F.ing Glasgow Rangers

It should really be Leeds United but Rangers fits equally well. Another Leeds soubriquet they have earned is the prefix “Dirty” If I had any get up and go I’d start an on line campaign to have them known as “Dirty Rangers.” The latest crime figures showing 13 of them on the verge of suspension would make it an easy push.

    My dear ,dear Kojo..

Why not stick an appealingly round figure on the value of YoungJames .

Thirty Million sounds nice, for his current level of development, and his burgeoning future prospects..

That’s £ Sterling,by the way, none of your increasing worthless fiat greenbacks, and soitenly no buttermulk dainties…

Seriously,Celtic need to put an end to all this unhealthy speculation linking YJ to a transfer move to Spurs in the near future.

The Board should release a statement declaring that YJ will not be permitted to move clubs in both the present window, and in the Summer.

He has several years remaining on his contract and unwelcome attention from wealthy English clubs should not be allowed to distract him.

This nonsense over Team GB and the Olympics needs to be put to bed right now.

YJ needs to be reminded that he is a Celtic player and his mind should be turning to Celtic’s vital preparations for the Champs League qualifiers, once this League is won.

We need to hit the ground running this time.

I don’t think the Celtic management do us any favours when discussing YJ with the media.

After the Boxing Day skelping of the GA,

Johann Mjallby was interviewed by Sky.

I was astonished by a remark he made.

“I’m sure YJ won’t be leaving in this transfer window,I expect him to stay until at least the Summer” !!!

Surprised to see that this remark produced little reaction on these pages.

Then we get this mantra that nobody is going to pay more than £10M for players from the SPL..we are underselling ourselves.

However,we find ourselves in an unprecedented position, with several of our talented players attracting the envious attentions of foreign clubs..

Allied to the most fortunate position that all are under contract for several more years..and there is no pressing need to sell any of our prize assets.

So nobody goes,(other than Ki,if they pay £12M up front).

Last word on Redknapp….he should spend less time tapping up our players now he is on trial this week ,accused of fraud..the case is expected to last two weeks, and he could face a huge fine and even a custodial sentence,if found guilty. Good!

I wouldn’t be surprised if YJ has been given the notion that he would be free to play for this bloody Team GB,if he joined Spurs early in the next transfer window.

    Fuggedaboutit….

Yer pal who thinks yer a Stoatir…

  21. Would the sale of James at this time be a terrible thing considering KC is coming back into the team now?

If Kris gets injured then we have a problem…but if we kept him fit I think we could see the season out with a midfield of Commons, Ledley, Wanyama, Brown- with Ki, Paddy, McGeouch and Ibrahim to provide cover.

Just a thought. I wouldn’t be overly thrilled with selling wee Forrest, but the money would give us the option to add a target man upfront (which we need) or a commanding first choice centre half.

Saying this, I think we could win the league with the current suad. If we sold James Forrest in the summer, however, those are the two areas we would need to strenghthen.

  22. truth4767…

It seems a shame you’re not getting a reasonable answer to your reasonable question, so I’ll have a go.

Well I thought I would give you my view of the world from 4 points behind. I had already conceded the league on here a few weeks ago and expect the lead to increase in the coming weeks. The transfer strategy at Ibrox is non existent and we are being linked with every 30 year old journeyman from all over the place.

Apparently Celik (sic) is a good player. But I’d agree, the Rangers transfer policy is worse than Celtic’s (admitedly still not great) transfer policy. Maybe for different reasons though. Bottom line I guess is that you can’t magic money from thin air, and Whyte is proving to be anything other than a Whyte knight….

I am more worried about the future of the club and the person currently in charge of it.

With good reason. Whyte had a chance to try and alter the stance of the club and the long standing issue with sectarianism (for further evidence read Follow Follow. The word “hun” is verboten, but the place is rife with anti-popery, with the words taig, tarrier and any number of other pejorative terms – Although I love the appending H’s onto things, comedy in motion… “thimothy” eh??? next they’ll be telling us the word “school” has a consipiracy attached!)…. anyway, Whyte has instead adopted a popular but stupid “what about them?” campaign. He’s playing to the gallery while selling you guys down the river. No vision, no cash and setting Ally McCoist up as fall guy. Smart moves, and moves that have suckered the stupider Rangers fans. For further evidence read the nonsence posted by David Leggat. Comedy gold (if you like your comedy the bitter by-prouct of Alzheimers or some other progressive brain disease).

There has been mass rejoicing on here about Rangers being liquidated, put into administration, relegated to division 3 etc., but I have to put this to you.

The SPL has always been a two horse league, you want it reduced to one, at a time when Scottish Football is at an all time low.

We are on our uppers, Hearts future is shaky, Aberdeen are millions in debt, so are Dundee Utd, Hibernian are the same and could be relegated and I would suggest that any pan European League or British league (which will happen someday) is years off.

    So there you have it.

The SPL is yours for years to come. No Old Firm games, no competition.

Your Champions League entry will be questionable.

Turgid entertainment, which lets face it , is the norm in SPL football gets, will get worse. The notion that Rangers supporters will then divide their allegiances to ther clubs is laughable, they won’t become stronger because of our removal.

TV deals will diminish, sponsorship will fall, your ability to bring players to the SPL, hard just now, will become even harder. Foriegn players relish the Old Firm match, that will be gone for them.

Now, as for season ticket sales, the first season they would probably hold up, because of an atmosphere of triumphalism and being the only show in town.

After that, your season ticket sales will drop like a stone, due to lack of competition and poor fare.

Now ask yourself, really, will you be able to put up for such a scenario, I don’t think so.

The points you make are red herrings. A simple question – Is Scottish football entertaining sport or sports entertainment? They sound familiar, but there’s a difference. Entertaining sport denotes a sporting event that’s entertaining. This is the prevailing view of football – and it’s one that stands any number of tests – anti-doping, anti-gambing, fair play initiatives etc etc etc. In order for the game to have *any* integrity, rules must be applied to preserve the honestly and even nature of sport. Just as Rangers should be relegated if they finish bottom of the table, they should be subject to the same rules governing every other club. And like Airdrie, if they go out of business then there are processess that any club should have to go through for admission to the league (let’s face it, it’s not, in ANY WAY re-admission). If Rangers are subject to different rules then the axis of the game shifts from entertaining sport to sports entertainment. Now, what’s the difference? Sports entertainment has no such barriers or concepts like “sporting integrity”… why would it? It’s an entertainment medium. As as such, honesty and integrity don’t come into it. If we go down that route though, why not just script all the games? Split the leagues evenly between Celtic and Rangers (as the Starsky and Hutch of the football world, ie the starts amongst the supporting actors) over a 10 year period? Why not script last minute goals, fould and penalties? Get the managers into a wrestling ring at half time? Where does the scripting and the advantage stop? And should it stop? If it’s only about raising income then, no, of course it shouldn’t!

The simple answer about sponsorship and attendences is this – these factors are at the mercy of the league. It’s not Celtic’s fault if Rangers fall away, but they still, under all other circumstances must deal with the fortunes of Rangers. This is no different. Every year we are hostage to the same fortune. That’s sport. As a sporting endeavour we can simply beat or lose to teams honestly and see where it gets us.

If you are suggesting that the SPL is simply a financial vehicle then it’s *already* something I’m not interested in. I wouldn’t watch Goldman Sachs vs Enron (yes, I know, but it’s for effect) fight it out on the stock exchange, and I have no interest in preserving cash flow. I don’t care how many fans follow Celtic, but I do care that Celtic are honest, and that the leagues integrity and honesty remain. These are far more important than fiscal preservation.

Rangers must be subject to the self same rules, regulations and turmoils of all other clubs. As must Celtic. If that means a new, smaller league with less cash and less fans? I don’t care? I don’t care for WWE wrestling and all other scripted sports. They are fundamentally dishonest and do NOT reward hard work, skill and inspiration. Why did I enjoy Henrik? Because of his genius. His ability to beat other guys who were giving 100%. I enjoyed Henrik lace Amoruso and lob Klos precisely because it was honest, genuine inspiration and skill. Would I have the same enjoyment knowing it was staged? No. It would hold no interest to me. Surely you must agree with regard to Laudrup too – the day Laudrup ripped Barry Smith (I think) to bits, destroyed him and set up Rangers for a win, did you enjoy it? Would your memory be the same if you knew Barry Smith was an actor? A stooge designed to make Laudrup look good? I doubt it.

Football is sport. Football is art. Football is not an investment bank or financial sink.

So, yes, I’d welcome the smaller league. The integrity of which I know is unsullied over the shamless cheating that would be involved in shifting my entertaining sport to sports entertainment.
