Peterhead 0-3 Celtic

671

The game was only 42 seconds old when Peterhead’s David Ross was sent clean through on Lukasz Zaluska after some excellent approach play but the Celtic keeper was alert enough to collect the ball and prevent the home team’s only chance of the game.  Anthony Stokes scored a hat trick and had a further two goals disallowed for offside as Celtic progressed into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Stokes looked most likely to score from the off.  Samaras fed the Irishman on 14 minutes but his shot was blocked.  Ki then played a forward pass inside the Peterhead right back to the overlapping Cha.  Cha’s cutback found Stokes, who leaned back in the act of shooting and fired over.  Just before the half hour mark Charlie Mulgrew passed a corner on the deck to Ki, who took a touch and shot against the crossbar from the edge of the D.  Keeper Jarvie then saved well from a Mulgrew free kick.

Celtic opened the scoring on 35 minutes with a classic Centenary goal when Paddy McCourt swivelled in the centre of the field before playing a forward ball for Samaras to run onto.  The Greek striker reached the ball inside the 18-yard-box and squared with his first touch to Stokes who knocked the ball into an empty net.

Shortly before half time Samaras carried the ball 80 yards before crossing for Stokes who finished well inside the 6-yard-box but he was flagged for offside.

Stokes second came on 57 minutes when Emilio Izaguirre dribbled into the box before playing a smart 1-2-3 with Stokes, who found what looked like an impossible space inside Jarvie’s right hand post.

Stokes was now on fire and could have added a third a moment later when he controlled a Mulgrew corner inside the ball but pulled his shot wide from 6 yards.  The striker completed his hat trick on 82 minutes a few seconds after substitute Dylan McGeough entered the field and dribbled into the box.  The ball was cleared to Wanyama to pushed it right to Brown who then sent it onto Stokes who made no mistake.

    Margaret McGill,

    Nothing about getting a grip.

Had we lost at Motherwell and Kilmarnock Lennon was history.

Alex Ferguson knows that only too well.

“Brammerhood” is truly a most excellent word.

Let’s hope Dylan and a few others achieve this state sharpish.

For our need is great and our enemies many.

    TET

I’ll give you this – Paddy mcCourt can play like a world class player…for about 90 secondes out of 90 mins..

World Class players do it for 90 mins in most of the games they play.

I don’t think McCourt is technically brilliant but he has enormous natural talent…I’m genuinely at a loss as to why it only comes out in small doses so infrequently.

On his game he oozes class but mostly he’s not on his game.

  4. Oh I’ve logged on and it’s the Paddy McCourt debate.

Paddy is a very very very tallented player if you look at his individual skill

but in my opinion you sacrifice a hell of a lot when he’s played.

I wouldn’t play paddy because I prefer balance, grit and tempo in the side

Aye ok, I have seen Paddy from an early age, had a season ticket for years in Ireland and Paddy was the star, he got his dream move and has worked his baws off, different managers have differing opinions about players, I honestly believe if Paddy was playing in england, Spain. Italy where he would be protected, he would be up there, I have met him many times, I have got drunk with him a few times, that si sad to say, but it’s true.

I also believe that he has cleaned his act up since he has been at Celtic, I would give him another chance to prove himself, when was the last time he didn’t give his all for us.

Deffo have to go to bed now.

If you have any info for the young fella I would much appriceate it, he will be in sectarianland next week.

The problem with having Broonie on the right flank is that it prevents Young Forrest from playing on the right wing..and he is much more effective playing on that side.

Broonie,on the other,is not as effective as Joe or Victor, when deployed in the central midfield role.

However,if we ever get Commons fit again, playing up the left,Broonie is a certain starter.

However,if this Lustig chap is the real deal at right back,we could push Matthews up the right flank..I would be disgusted if he was sold.

Get Jordan Rhodes, even if he costs £7M.

He reminds me of the young Gary Lineker,in his Leicester days, except that he is also deadly in the air.Sell Ki ,if we need to fund his acquisition.

And that would complete the business for this transfer window.

    No more waifs and strays..

No more projects at this time…

  8. Missed the match today grrr

but I’m told by the wife that if you are a father sometime you have to sacrifice watching Celtic.

So I don’t have anything to say on the match for a change.

But the highlight of my day was taking some of my winning from yesterday and chucking it

On Sunderland -1 goal. St Martin is a reliable manager and Sunderland won 2-0

Low point of the day was while I was looking after Tictalker junior and missing the game, I managed to loose the slip.

Sorry TET. This isnt true either. One of the tragedies of football. The Brazil of Socrates NEVER won the world cup.

McCourt and Stokes both got great feet and natural foot baling savvy but both lack pace. I think Paddy also lacks natural fitness required to maximise his talent… Stamina. Stokes might be slow but he seems to put the shift in , naturally the fitter of the two.

The reality is if they were faster they would be playing a notch or two above SP HELL…

Hooper on the other hand has speed and fitness but lazier outside the box.

Sammi has the lot but not the finish.

So maybe we need to find the blend….maybe we already have…Sammi or Hooper with Stokes?

  11. Tricoloured Ribbon on

Irrespective of whether you think he is good, bad or indifferent, Paddy McCourt is an absolute gentleman.

He will always be the same Paddy, working class, no airs or graces and an absolute laugh a minute.

His family are the exact same, lovely, lovely people.

He is so humble it is beyond belief and his love for the Celtic support will live forever.

I also missed the game earlier, thankfully cqn kept me up to date when on my travels. I watched the highlights tonight – they were a bit nasty!!! Delighted for Stokes, his hard work is paying off.

    Sydney..

Too early to get rid of Cha and Kelvin Wilson (IMO)…

Better to concentrate on getting rid of all players out on loan…

  19. Lads it was a joke but i didn’t mean to be smart with you but i was referring to Margaret on here slating Paddy, he was involved in the 3 goals and he played 80 odd minutes and he still gets slated.

I am still confused by our fans, they say paddy can’t last more than 20 mins but play him off the front 2 and let him run riot.

I would give him a run of games and lets see how he gets on because he has hardly been given a run of more than 2 to 3 games in the trot.

Dundee Utd will play 5 in midfield on saturday and it will be hard to break down so we will need something special to break them down and Paddy McCourt gives us that something special.

I will also stick my head head out and say if young McGeough stays injury free then he will be a star because everytime he has came on he has impressed.

    Sydney Tim,

As regards all areas of the team I THINK we are strong enough but the striking department is my worry.

Out of the 16 players at Peterhead today we had ONE recognised striker and God did he deliver.

No ifs ,buts or maybes. We need a striker to ENSURE the title.

A team full of talented young players, who will only get better.

    Margaret McGill –

I kind of agree with you re Paddy McCourt.

He is not what he is hyped up to be, but he has a place in the squad. That place is to be brought on in the last 20 minutes of games where we need a goal against a packed defence.

Of course he has won matches with individual pieces of brilliance, but that just emphasises my point.

Anthony Stokes was outstanding last night, finding the net 5 times in all, and nabbing a hat-trick.

Yet after the game people are coming on here and calling Paddy for man-of-the-match. It seems to me that Paddy gets some people’s MOTM by default if he plays for 90 minutes. How does that work?

He had a decent game at Peterhead. No more, no less.
