Police fail, Shakhtar toil

322

Police Scotland refuse to allow a game to proceed with 2,000 Napoli fans a few hours after the Queen’s body leaves for London.  It is only in recent years European games have been policed as though we were living under Martial Law.  Mini-vans full of officers, accompanied by impressively expensive hardware, now segregate our streets outside grounds.  The same is true when 700 Celtic fans visit Ibrox and in the corresponding game at Celtic Park.

No event proceeded the upgrade in spend, we went from peaceful, low-key policing, to what looks like a paramilitary occasion.  The overtime costs must be off the scale.  It solves a problem that never existed; in my decades attending Glasgow derbies and European games I witnessed countless occasions where rival fans walked away from games on either side of a street, with no police presence, never once did I see trouble.

There are real problems elsewhere.  This change did not make our streets any safer outside pubs and take-away venues, where, hours later, drunken flashpoints happen.  It also takes away the limited resources previously used for traffic duty, so fans are trapped in the area of the ground for much longer than before Mr Salmond’s policing reforms a few years ago.

Can we have the return of non-military policing, please?  Maybe then we will be able to cope with two low-key events happening at different times on the same day.  This is all a bit embarrassing.

Like you, I was keen for Premiership games go ahead on Saturday, as I expected Aberdeen to take points against Newco and for Celtic to beat Livingston.  Ultimately, I doubt the postponements will make any difference to the outcome of the title.

What may be more relevant is the unexpected gift of a free week ahead of the game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.  Shakhtar had an exhausting game against Chornomorets Odesa on Saturday.  Marian Shved equalised for them in the 74th minute before they scored a 96th minute winner against a team who have drawn two and lost two of their four games this season.

  1. I expect us to beat Donesk. Should we leave Poland with no points it will represent a considerable set back in terms of where we thought we were with this team.

Good luck to him. It will be interesting to see how he performs.

  5. The huns most likely will find themselves now heading to Pittodrie mid week, in winter, under the floodlights. That seems a tougher prospect to me than a Saturday lunchtime in September.

Like Paul, I don’t think it’ll make a material difference to the league table come May though.

However, the added recovery time from a physically and mentally exhausting game against the European champions should help us on Wednesday.

I think it will prove very accurate.

The glue which was bonding this lot has now come unstuck. I don’t think anyone can save them from themselves.

Arguably William playing a straight bat like his gran but his brother will always be a challenge and plenty of time for Charles et al to f up before William acceds to the throne.

Also the Andrew and Anne plus Edward will be totally marginalised now which won’t go down easily I imagine.

There is a soap opera in this I think. Maybe even a Netflix blockbuster mini series.

  10. Best case scenario for Wednesday will be wins for Celtic and RM. Worst case, we lose and RBL don’t. Our performance in Warsaw will be an indication of where we currently stand in the European context.

  11. A long long time ago in a CQN far away the good folk on CQN gave birth to Resolution 12.

It had many aims at the time depending on individual perceptions but its main aim was to provide leverage to Celtic for SFA reform in spite of media attempts to portray it as Celtic v Rangers supporters banter item.

Well changing the rules to prevent any club lieing about tax overdue at 31 March have now been materially strengthened in the new UEFA Financial Sustainability Regulations (FSR) and whilst not a part of Res12 but vital to fairness in Scottish football , new rules restricting the amount that can be spent on a playing squad has also been introduced starting at 90% next season , then 80% next after and finally 70% in 3 seasons time.

Phil Mc Giolla Bhain has been a solid supporter of Res12 since the off and has brought supporters up to date at

    https://philmacgiollabhain.ie/2022/09/11/why-outsiders-are-needed-to-impose-fairness-on-planet-fitba/#more-26757 .

The SFA might have avoided self reform like the plague but Andre Traverso at UEFA, provided with ample evidence of skullduggery at SFA level via Res12 has recognised SFA failings.

For those who have been supportive throughot take a bow. For those who stopped being supportive or actively worked against Res12 there is a lesson to be learned which is honest persistence pays.

  12. As someone who is interested in Scottish history, British and Irish too, I must admit I find watching the latest episode unfold very interesting indeed. Might not be as fascinating as the history of the Jungle roof of course. I’ll grant you that….

“Football for some is more real than death, the establishment and politics, fine, but the fact is not understanding that shows a lack of self awareness.”

    ————————————–

Those are 3 characteristics of the Queen’s funeral but they are far from the complete set. These are three which are actively debated regularly on here so are not contrary to the blog’s obsessions.

Because of our demographic, death is an unfortunate regular occurrence. Because of our general political and philosophical bent, politics and a dislike of the establishment are also regular topics.

No, it is the characteristics you omitted, that are central to our distaste for North Korean levels of Organised Obsession and Soviet levels of Military Ceremony and Broadcasting censorship.

We are being addressed by hagiographers and liars who would not dare present a semi-critical word in evaluation of this women’s life. A women who paid no income tax for most of her life, whose family is not subject to inheritance tax, Who conduct their financial activities via offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands. Who paid off a charge against a paedophile with money we gave her, without asking for permission.

We are being told, by a sensible and humane man like Clive Myrie, that the energy crisis and the deaths it will cause pales into insignificance with the death of the privileged and fawned upon 96 year old. We are presented with views claiming intimacy from people who have never met her and these are met with no dissent or scepticism because the broadcasters are being told not to do this. Anyone who dissents is removed like Trevor Sinclair. Never again should we listen to sneers about cancel culture, virtue signalling and snowflakes from the likes of Talk Radio and GB News, who take camera crews to cover their quiet, private and intimate reflections on her life.

We are seeing Wayne Lineker sending out girls in bikinis and bearskin hats to mark her life. We are seeing ex-soldiers filming themselves shedding a tear for their Commander. We are seeing a pensioner in a makeshift plastic guardsman’s uniform bellowing in public. We are being told about bees being informed of the death of the Queen of England and this morning I caught 2 minutes of a Radio Scotland lass struggling to go on in the same pretend-sonorous voice to string together yet further epithets of praise, when she had clearly exhausted all her no-doubt professional range of positive attitudes and virtues to ascribe to a person she had never met and never really considered important but her job and future career depended on not mis-speaking. I left the broadcast at the point she was introducing a pet Psychologist who had once trained a corgi, as they were about to discus the grief of Corgis, who incidentally, have been left in the care of Prince Andrew (I won’t go there).

We have not jumped a shark in the media here. We are way beyond jumping a whale even. We are jumping Intergalactic species here.

This isn’t about just death, politics and our establishment rulers. It is about enforced silencing of dissent and manufactured compliance.

It is so OTT, there must be a backlash. When Celtic fans next play, there will be much more outrage than usual about our songbook, our lack of respect and appreciation for the Royalty/Tory party intertwine, and our sheer unwillingness to kowtow to them.

The cancellation of the Livi game did not honour our recent Queen; it dishonoured us. It told us you are not going to be allowed to sully this diktat with non-compliance as that women with the placard in Embra found out yesterday.

Normally, I am not too keen on the wall to wall Rebs that constitutes the Songbook today, not on political or taste grounds, just on lack of variety grounds, but I am sorely tempted to sing every one myself just because of the insults that have been levelled at my intelligence and my position in this world.

I am reinforced in my desire not to be a subject and if any country or party is willing to proclaim a Republican narrative, I would join with them. Well, apart from the Greens, because, though I agree with most of their environmental concerns, I detect a strong whiff of anti-catholicism and a desire for enforced orthodoxy from their current Scottish leader

CELTIC have been dealt a fresh injury blow, according to a report.

It’s been said that Carl Starfelt faces another period on the sidelines.

The Swedish defender only just recently returned to the fold following a lengthy spell out with injury.

Now, according to the Scottish Sun, the 27-year-old faces up to another month out of action.

There is some good news in that Starfelt does not need surgery on the knee injury, which he suffered against Rangers last weekend.

However, he will certainly miss the Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk and next week’s trip to St Mirren, should that game go ahead.

And this for me is the nub of the issue. If Charles and William declared tomorrow that they are renouncing the crown and instead want an elected head of State, the crawlers you mention; Knights, CBEs, OBEs etc. would not stand for it. It is so engrained in the psyche of a lot of people of ‘influence’ in the UK that the idea of no monarchy means for them no more crumbs from their table. No ‘honours’, no daily payments in the Lords, no ahem, influence in industry and seats on committees, boards etc. In fact they might have to earn their status and influence, we certainly cannot have that.

I was reminded of a man I knew for many years, related through marriage, an Irishman and ‘nationalist’. He was a good man and a very educated man; in fact he spent his professional life in education. On retirement he founded a charity for homeless young people, with education and re training at it’s core. He was nominated for a MBE, he accepted it and went to Buckingham Palace to receive it from Queen Elizabeth. I met him afterwards and he knew my stance on the monarchy and all the hangers on. He justified his acceptance ( I recognise that he didn’t have to justify anything to me but felt the need himself, I didn’t ask him to) saying that ‘it would help with any grant applications the charity make with him as Chairman having a MBE’. When I pointed out that he had described perfectly one of the core reasons the ‘honour system’ is wrong it is that. Surely each application is judged in it’s own merits rather that what ‘title’ a Chairman or Board members has. Apparently not!
