Police fail, Shakhtar toil

322

Police Scotland refuse to allow a game to proceed with 2,000 Napoli fans a few hours after the Queen’s body leaves for London.  It is only in recent years European games have been policed as though we were living under Martial Law.  Mini-vans full of officers, accompanied by impressively expensive hardware, now segregate our streets outside grounds.  The same is true when 700 Celtic fans visit Ibrox and in the corresponding game at Celtic Park.

No event proceeded the upgrade in spend, we went from peaceful, low-key policing, to what looks like a paramilitary occasion.  The overtime costs must be off the scale.  It solves a problem that never existed; in my decades attending Glasgow derbies and European games I witnessed countless occasions where rival fans walked away from games on either side of a street, with no police presence, never once did I see trouble.

There are real problems elsewhere.  This change did not make our streets any safer outside pubs and take-away venues, where, hours later, drunken flashpoints happen.  It also takes away the limited resources previously used for traffic duty, so fans are trapped in the area of the ground for much longer than before Mr Salmond’s policing reforms a few years ago.

Can we have the return of non-military policing, please?  Maybe then we will be able to cope with two low-key events happening at different times on the same day.  This is all a bit embarrassing.

Like you, I was keen for Premiership games go ahead on Saturday, as I expected Aberdeen to take points against Newco and for Celtic to beat Livingston.  Ultimately, I doubt the postponements will make any difference to the outcome of the title.

What may be more relevant is the unexpected gift of a free week ahead of the game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.  Shakhtar had an exhausting game against Chornomorets Odesa on Saturday.  Marian Shved equalised for them in the 74th minute before they scored a 96th minute winner against a team who have drawn two and lost two of their four games this season.

  1. What is the Starz on

Can anyone confirm what the capacity of the Bernabeu will be for Celtics visit in November,

I have heard its reduced capacity (36,000) because of on going redevelopment works.

    Thanks

  2. Mrs McCluskey from Grange Hill gone now as well.

I used to run home from school, back in the 80s , watch her on the tv, a role model, a great headmistress, I would marvel at how she kept it together, while Tucker and Sammo would get up to stupid japes and kapers, during those hard times, the troubles never far away, unemployment, the miners strike and thatcher, it was mrs mccluskey who was the very glue that kept the United Kingdom together, we owe her so much ……

even though i never met her and i knew she was really an actress, well she was like a grandmother to me.

I left a packet of salt and shake, a texan bar and an uncle orinoco womble down at the school gates, a huge crowd of 4 other people were there,

    no words really

  3. I cannot believe that so many are getting so worked up about National Granny Week.

The more they talk the easier it will be to ignore them in time.

Yep, but it’s a condition/contagion propagated by that hungriest of beasts; those media vampires. Legions of commentators, hingers-on, pundits and tenuous stringers adding the most spurious of spurs to the post-mortem, public relations parade. IMO, it was fleetingly sad that a privileged public pensioner pops her royal clogs.

But Mrs Quad and I can’t see the incessant infatuation as anything more than editorial exploitation.

She and I will shortly be watching more Gomorrah (La Serie) for tales of slightly lesser dynastic dysfunction ;)

  5. FFS all the nutters on now even the disabled bashers.

  6. Och, watching tv on my lunch break, and I was hoping to see our new king, in a plane, or in a car going past some fields or roads, or landing, or taking off, or going down a set of stairs, or maybe walking slowly up a hill with his brothers, or sitting in a chair, or writing something, or standing up laughing, or waving , or biting his lip saying mummy, or holding the new queens hand, or wearing a kilt, or a mourning suit, or a cravat, some medals,

but no none of that, the disrespect the tv stations have here for our very own king of england.

  9. The King is on his way to another of the royal castles, this time the one in the North of Ireland, the poorly partitioned 6 counties part.

To celebrate that most loyal of orange lodges can confirm there will an assembly outside catholic churches, parades in other communities main streets, bonfires burning effigies of prominent catholics, followed by assaults on his majesties police vehicles commencing at 5pm.

Read James Forrest’s piece there and on the whole I agree with most of it , but I am concerned with regards to the ST mirren game and the harm it will inflict on our club and our tremendous support , the laptop loyal are waiting for this pencils sharpened to degrade us not only nation wide but beyond . I am of Irish decent and proud of that , I listened to Charlie speech about defending the faith it scunnered me along with some of the commentators remarks , but would it be possible for us at the match to do nothing to arm the nation against us for the sake of 60 seconds , outwith Scotland we are a highly respected club please let us keep that respect intact . Have you considered that a lot of people throughout Britain and the world will admire the Celtic support for their refusal to support a monarchy and its imperial roots ?

Am raging with Sinn Fein and the so called republicans.

SF are Irish republicans. Who GB appoints as it’s head of state is their business.

They’re also positioning themselves to lead the next Irish government which means attending the funeral of the UK head of state.

Telly a necessary evil if we want to follow the Celts.

But even channels you expect to exercise balance and restraint are way out-of-kilter atm.

Anyways, on more apt topics, I agree that Ange will have the lhads well prepped for the Shaktaris.

    A must-do not nice to.

    ========

Yes pal I am well aware of that , the point of my post was my concern for our club and our fans ,our enemies are waiting , I am not saying my idea is the correct one , but as I said for the sake of 60 seconds we can scupper our haters . The Celtic fc and it’s fan base have conducted themselves correctly take the silence for rickson . Cooper for example , the laptop loyal were let down on those occasions due to the exemplary conduct of the Celtic fans . I sir have not one once of concern for the monarchy , I do have concern for our football club and us fans , we are burdened with bbc sport ,where you have to have been a rangers player or fan to get a gig on it , sky sport

Is no better , to give them ammo does us no favours . HH
