Police fail, Shakhtar toil

322

Police Scotland refuse to allow a game to proceed with 2,000 Napoli fans a few hours after the Queen’s body leaves for London.  It is only in recent years European games have been policed as though we were living under Martial Law.  Mini-vans full of officers, accompanied by impressively expensive hardware, now segregate our streets outside grounds.  The same is true when 700 Celtic fans visit Ibrox and in the corresponding game at Celtic Park.

No event proceeded the upgrade in spend, we went from peaceful, low-key policing, to what looks like a paramilitary occasion.  The overtime costs must be off the scale.  It solves a problem that never existed; in my decades attending Glasgow derbies and European games I witnessed countless occasions where rival fans walked away from games on either side of a street, with no police presence, never once did I see trouble.

There are real problems elsewhere.  This change did not make our streets any safer outside pubs and take-away venues, where, hours later, drunken flashpoints happen.  It also takes away the limited resources previously used for traffic duty, so fans are trapped in the area of the ground for much longer than before Mr Salmond’s policing reforms a few years ago.

Can we have the return of non-military policing, please?  Maybe then we will be able to cope with two low-key events happening at different times on the same day.  This is all a bit embarrassing.

Like you, I was keen for Premiership games go ahead on Saturday, as I expected Aberdeen to take points against Newco and for Celtic to beat Livingston.  Ultimately, I doubt the postponements will make any difference to the outcome of the title.

What may be more relevant is the unexpected gift of a free week ahead of the game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.  Shakhtar had an exhausting game against Chornomorets Odesa on Saturday.  Marian Shved equalised for them in the 74th minute before they scored a 96th minute winner against a team who have drawn two and lost two of their four games this season.

    Happy birthday Ian Hamilton.

According to wiki, the ringleader of the Stone of Scone repatriation is 97 years old today.

The whole Stone of Scone thing just about sums up Scottish nationalism, doesn’t it?

Angeball is it – you’ve never struck me as a believer or was there a hint of satire ?

Having even a special talent doesn’t guarantee any player anywhere a game every week. Celtic and AP didn’t or couldn’t see Tom Rogic as an asset worth paying so much for, especially when he ‘wanted a new challenge’

Even at best his type of fitness level wasn’t for 90 minutes, every week, he was facing a diminishing role as is James Forrest because of new signings, younger players etc.

Surprised was that we didn’t try to recoup a fee from the undoubted asset that was left, very charitable it might seem to some supporters.

  3. To my mind, Ange did accommodate Big Tom as much as he possibly could, actually, he had to due to lack of numbers, but, he knew that if he was going to fully implement the way he wanted us to play then he would have to be replaced with someone more athletic in that position, por cierto

  4. Read James Forrest’s piece there and on the whole I agree with most of it , but I am concerned with regards to the ST mirren game and the harm it will inflict on our club and our tremendous support , the laptop loyal are waiting for this pencils sharpened to degrade us not only nation wide but beyond . I am of Irish decent and proud of that , I listened to Charlie speech about defending the faith it scunnered me along with some of the commentators remarks , but would it be possible for us at the match to do nothing to arm the nation against us for the sake of 60 seconds , outwith Scotland we are a highly respected club please let us keep that respect intact . “I utterly reject being controlled or told what to think or do by the state”

Are you referring to the inconvenience of a football match being played at a later date,

or are you of the view that the statute book, and all powers derived from it should not apply to you as an individual?

  6. SFtBs @ 1:54 PM,

Apologies for the delay in getting back.

A hugely interesting post, if I may say spoiled a bit by the pop at the “Greens”

Why Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, decided to pass in Scotland is now very apparent, well in one sense, of course in another sense it’s still intriguing.

Her death was always going to be a blow for the Unionists, so that had to be counteracted.

The appalling vista of a United Ireland and Independent Scotland looms large.

Yet what was their main concern in this respect!?

Was it to try to stem the wave of independence? Possibly, but Lillibet was no Cnute, far too cute.

My feeling is the way the British Isles is going to look after Scottish Independence and a United Ireland.

A joint armed forces and a common Monarchy would be my guess

Of course you could always concentrate on the bread and circuses, and being a voyeur of the voyeurs.

Of course the divide and rool of having a pop at the Greens could also make a meaningful distraction.

In football parlance, they are running rings around you…

    Hail Hail

It’s good to watch when it’s going well, and very effective against teams of a lesser or equal ability.

I’m not convinced it will be effective against better sides because it’s inflexible and therefore predictable.

Perhaps it will evolve and adapt to deal with the better quality sides that hopefully will be encountered in Europe.

Medium to long term it also creates a problem regarding succession. When Ange leaves ( and he will) what happens? Is it back to the drawing board and have the side treading water while a new manager reinvents the wheel?

Angeball another name for attacking football no different to Brendanball whose invincibles suffered in Europe from time to time, the same as did Strachanball Ronnyball and Lennonball.

Ange admittedly takes it to extremes, but this year he’s more equipped than any Celtic manager in modern times IMO.

He has a CL squad on paper, just has to get the points to confirm it.

  17. BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 13TH SEPTEMBER 2022 10:45 AM

Other managers were prepared to trim their sails when required . There’s no sign of that happening with Angeball. So it’s not the same.

    Time will tell.

AP vs the blob / Board.

AP has a much more talented squad than previous managers.

JPNF / LA = huge talents.

KF = talisman almost from the off.

    RH / MO’R = huge potential / class MF’ers.

JH = Old stager who is making the most of his opportunity.

GG = JC / 1976 and then some — again making the most of his opportunity.

Ex RK x 2 = Early days but high hopes.

DT = Huge talent for the NT but struggling in this company.

    To do list:

    More quality at CB.

Work to tighten up at FB.

Improve the balance of the MF.

Increase the self belief / confidence of the squad.

The issue for the blob / board is the pit pony syndrome.

Now that we have a manager with a full blown growth agenda it will be difficult to go back to a PL style lazy lump taking what PL’s pet agents can provide.

AP is ambitious in a way that WGS never was.

WGS turned us round in 2005/06 but quickly ran out of energy.

    Not seeing this with AP.

Any progress this season and we saw quite a lot in the game against RM and we will have 20/30K going forward this season desperate for tickets but not able to get any — at what point does the Blob / board get aff their collective erses and start matching AP’s ambition?

JS built a team to win the EC from a club that was a laughing stock / joke.

AP is someway off that but he is a huge contrast / improvement from NL2 and that will bring its own rewards.

We have been served tripe for far too long and any effort to take us forward stands out like a sore thumb from the wasted years where PL was running the show to a set of closely typed instructions from DD / the Irish Raj.

Our resources plus B/G focus = good times ahead.

It has been talked about before but our SPL focus has held us back.

The outsider that is AP has changed our outlook.
