Policing and Celtic

830

I spoke to Celtic today about various questions surrounding stewarding and policing in and around the stadium.

The club would not be specific on any particular incident but I got a run down on various instances (alleged assault, vandalism) when Celtic have responded to police requests for identifying information on fans.  Celtic said the police can only ask for identifying information if they allege a crime has been committed and Celtic’s safety certificate, allowing them to open the stadium, depends on the club complying with police requests if they allege a crime has been committed.

The club were clear that complying with police requests on such instances is not a matter of choice for Celtic, “It happens, it has always happened, and it happens at every other club in the UK”.

I asked if the club target fans and ask the police to arrest them.  I was told this is ludicrous to suggest the police do the bidding of the club (I was also laughed at for making the suggestion).  Celtic can revoke tickets and stadium access without recourse to the police.

My conversation happened before anyone at Celtic heard last night’s podcast from the HomeBhoys but I asked specific questions about the red haired fan discussed who was allegedly brandishing a seat and was told no police request had been received in connection to him and that his details had therefore not been passed to the police.

I understand the club have met with various supporters’ groups and clarified these issues, as well as more general stadium safety matters, and that they will issue a statement later today in response to questions asked by the Celtic Trust, who I believe put many of these points in writing.

After speaking to Celtic I spoke to a police officer who is a regular Match Commander at SPL games (not Celtic games) who confirmed clubs would lose their safety certificate if they failed to cooperate with the police.

Having had the chance to put questions to Celtic I asked them give others the same opportunity and to unconditionally meet with any fans’ group with concerns on any of these matters. They assured me they would.

Your post at 22:40 castigates the GB as an entrist, parasitical grouping whose purpose is not to support Celtic but to promote their political agenda. This entrism apparently allowing a platform for a politics which is wholly rejected within broader society.

I see no need to comment on your slightly paranoid, ‘republicans under the bed’ theory of the GB’s collective motivation as I think it says more about you than those you accuse. Moreover, in my albeit limited experience of Celtic fans, whilst I accept that the GB’s political views (in so far as they are a defined and homogenous expression) may not represent the majority of Celtic supporters I certainly think they would find significantly greater accord than your own.

Along with the limited number of your fellow ‘right

minded’ posters in the ‘Kojo Brigade’, you regularly enlighten us here with your political views, including the fantastical idea that a pro-establishment, pro-corporate, mainstream culture is not in fact political at all. I personally detest this ‘poppies are us’ mentality but I would not dream of accusing you of blog entrism or ascribe hidden, subversive motivations as your unseen raison d’etre. But then I’m just an intolerant old leftie…

  3. Top of the morning to you all from the white winter wonderland of west Fife.

PJBhoynyc, I am with you on the GB.

I don’t agree with some of their, purported, views, but they care and dare to have their purpose known, which is good enough for me.

I will march to support them as they don’t detract from the Celtic story and in fact enhance it which is more than can be said for Corrigan’s incorrigibles with their batons drawn and their dawn raids.

The Green Brigade are simply a bunch of Celts like you and me who want to create a bit of atmosphere, nothing else. Perhaps the plc know better from the posh seats?

    There`s just one issue.

Are Celtic all inclusive or not?

Irish republicans included, people of all races, creeds, colours and political preferences.

Why do you assume that I do not support Irish Republicanism?

The politics of the Green Brigade are their business. Why should I,as a Celtic supporter be associated with their particular agenda?

Equally,if they are permitted to promote their agenda, then,as a man of principle, would you support the right of a group of people of ANY political preference to stick their colours to the Celtic mast?

    If not,why not?

Do you believe in equal rights?

The basic point is:What has all this got to do with Celtic?

All I know is that it is damaging the Club I love.

Your personal comments about me are irrelevant.

    I don`t matter.

    Celtic do.

I’m not interested in getting involved in any GB debate, just enjoy their enthusiasim from afar.

I have seen many comments on their composition, politics, behaviour etc.

  15. macjay1 for Neil Lennon,

I agree with you. Celtic Park is where we express our support for Celtic, first and last. It is not where a few “leaders” allow some of our younger members to get lifted for the leaders’ own agenda, part of which imo is to attack the Board, and especially Peter Lawwell.

  21. We are cheated out of titles and money and are not recompensed and the culprits not brought to book, our rivals, the establishment club, are allowed carte blanche to single handedly bring Scotlands national sport to it’s knees, laws are created to even up arrest figures for both sides of the’ old firm’. The singing of Irish Republican songs has been outlawed at football matches (wether it’s appropriate or not is irrelevant), our manager is attacked on TV and the attacker is found innocent and all this against the background of a media who go out their way to paint us in a negative light while trying to promote the villains of the piece as victims.

All this and more are gripes regularly aired on this blog, but hey, keep politics out of Celtic.

  22. I have been following Celtic for almost 60 years. There has always been a strong social and Political awareness amongst the Support. There has always been a sense that we are more then a Football Club, as the great Tommy said when you play for Celtic “You play for a People & a Cause. I totally agree that it is right that we be a totally inclusive Club open to all. However I reject the notion that we should consign History to the trash can and we should just concentrate totally on the football and become a colourless, odourless indistinguishable Football Club. There is nothing wrong with a Support that has a social conscience and a deep appreciation of its roots, particularly when the roots spring from one of the most horrible events of European History.i.e. The Irish Genocide. I understand there is a now a new breed of Supporter who are emotionally detached from that era and that is understandable but there are many of us who cannot and will not forget the pain & suffering of the first Celts and our position needs to be respected too.

    Apologies to the politically correct.

  24. The fact that the agenda of the GB causes division amongst the Celtic support, highlights the problem of having an organised group of any faction operating in the name of Celtic.

It would be the same if it was a Knights of St. Columba or Opus Dei, who occupied a corner of the stadium.

It is that reason that causes me to question their relevance to Celtic.

The sneer and smear replies to macjay1 are unfortunate, but, I’m afraid, predictable from some quarters.

Also the implication that because we don’t bow down and worship the GB, we are somehow not Celtic supporters.

I have supported the club for more than half of their existance and will not be disenfranchised by any fifth column fellow travellers, with their pithy one liners.
