Policing and Celtic

830

I spoke to Celtic today about various questions surrounding stewarding and policing in and around the stadium.

The club would not be specific on any particular incident but I got a run down on various instances (alleged assault, vandalism) when Celtic have responded to police requests for identifying information on fans.  Celtic said the police can only ask for identifying information if they allege a crime has been committed and Celtic’s safety certificate, allowing them to open the stadium, depends on the club complying with police requests if they allege a crime has been committed.

The club were clear that complying with police requests on such instances is not a matter of choice for Celtic, “It happens, it has always happened, and it happens at every other club in the UK”.

I asked if the club target fans and ask the police to arrest them.  I was told this is ludicrous to suggest the police do the bidding of the club (I was also laughed at for making the suggestion).  Celtic can revoke tickets and stadium access without recourse to the police.

My conversation happened before anyone at Celtic heard last night’s podcast from the HomeBhoys but I asked specific questions about the red haired fan discussed who was allegedly brandishing a seat and was told no police request had been received in connection to him and that his details had therefore not been passed to the police.

I understand the club have met with various supporters’ groups and clarified these issues, as well as more general stadium safety matters, and that they will issue a statement later today in response to questions asked by the Celtic Trust, who I believe put many of these points in writing.

After speaking to Celtic I spoke to a police officer who is a regular Match Commander at SPL games (not Celtic games) who confirmed clubs would lose their safety certificate if they failed to cooperate with the police.

Having had the chance to put questions to Celtic I asked them give others the same opportunity and to unconditionally meet with any fans’ group with concerns on any of these matters. They assured me they would.

How on earth were Barcelona in 2nd gear when Celtic beat them?

A full team played and battered Celtic for most of the game but they couldn’t score thanks to our team’s heroics and Fraser Forster in the goal. Celtic took their chances and deserved to win.

I hate the league cup. It is a mickey mouse tournament with no European place and no value for Celtic other than a possible treble and those are done rarely in any event.

Modern football is changing. Do Man U, Arsenal or other teams bother that much with their version of the league cup?

    NO

    Why?

Because they know the real stuff is the CL – end of story.

I honestly don’t know why you even support Celtic because you only seem interested in pulling the club’s achievements down.

You can’t count the number of other sides who have beaten Barcelona this season on two hands at a push and when we did it only Real Madrid had beaten them.

  3. Back in the Real World.

A fine suggestion from Ralph Malph on E-tims:-

“I liked the reply to yesterdays diary from Bondibrian, who upon purchasing a ticket for the Australia -Oman game, was warned he’d be in the “active section”, and may be required to join in.

Thats the way forward. Scrap season books and just let people sit where they want-or restrict books to three stands, and let those who fancy a day at the football sit in the other one. Or a couple of lower tiers.”

Would we, as a consumer support, accept being forcibly moved from our place in the stadium (e.g. 2 sections of the Jock Stein Lower reserved for day ticket sales)?

In beating Barcelona we should have swept St Mirren aside no problem. The answer to the question is both games hould have been won. We have the players to have beaten both. They proved against Barca twice they can compete at the highest level. Why did we perform so badly against St Mirren?

St Mirren have around 5 or 6 players in their first team who came through our youth set up. Maybe they had something to prove.

Celtic should be winning the treble this season. The league has seen the team win most games in 2nd gear. Bring in Lassad and Miku on large wages gave us next to nothing. We would have been better playing our own youths against St Mirren rather than have these two guys on the bench. I don’t see what either has brought to the side for the money we are paying them in wages. I can handle losing against Scottish teams IF we play our youths. It gives them experience and there is nothing better than seeing Bhoys come through the ranks and play for the club.

The League Cup next season should be a tournement that Celtic play under 21’s and squad players IF we are still in Europe. They should be good enough to get to at least the final. If they don’t it’s a great learning curve for them and we will reap the benefits in the future.

The gist of it is that according to Mr Cairney the version of certain events regarding the GB presented to us by the Club is false. Specifically what was discussed at a meeting at which Mr Crainey was present.

The Celtic team that night put in the most disciplined performance in years. Every player played his part, and let’s not forget that several regulars were missing.

The atmosphere that night was also spine-tingling, and reverberated around the globe.

What I’m driving at – did we parade a trophy after beating Barca ?

Did the manager learn anything from it ?

If he did – why did he play 3 strikers v’s Juve when – half the team were

    carrying injuries ?

Why undo all the good work in that field(CL) ?

Was the manager – naive or, ego-tripping v’s Juve ?

Efe was just of the plane after his ANC exploits so – why no protective

shield in front of him from midfield ?

Has Efe been badly managed by Neil ?

I mean, Efe showed he was cutting-it at CH and, was bringing a player

out of big Kelvin then…Neil turns into WGS and started playing Efe in

From conversations I’ve had with close friends and family, the general feeling is of unswerving support for the GB… Despite their ill advised Poppy statement- we all live and learn and as a prominent poster on here reminded me recently-we all have the right to grow and learn as we go. He was never more correct.

At the time I told my son that there would be a backlash to the GB and we would probably see a rival group forming- he laughed at the idea. Recently he told me it was actually happening now – but I doubt it will gain any real impetus as the GB are well established and have the vast majority of Celts on board.

Speaking of the board. They do seem to lack vision – good basics but fail to grasp the nettle at times. There is a sense that they have the nous and means … But lack the necessary drive!

    Rival group? The White Brigade?

There will always be factions in any group. I’m sure there are guys in the GB who don’t agree with everything the group have done or suggest.

That’s life I suppose. Another fan group would not be a bad thing but the issues start if they start sniping at each other. That’s the last thing we need. Everyone should be focused on getting behind the team. They perfom much better when we are united behind them. The GB have been a breath of fresh air to Scottish football and numerous clubs have copied them to some extent with some relative success. I reckon the English clubs will follow suit next season too. The atmosphere at grounds in Britain needs a kick start. The GB have shown how it can be successful. I just wish that the club and the GB would sit down and get the issues sorted.
