Postecoglou and planning for January

206

It was revealing that days ahead of the international break, the subject of the January transfer window tripped off Ange Postecoglou tongue.  It is as though he spent much of the previous week planning ahead.

When you manage a team that competes in Europe your availability to scout players in person is very limited.  Most of the work is delegated out, supplemented by TV coverage, but the latter will only ever tell part of the story.

Club managers have been known to take in eight games over an international break.  With travel restrictions still in place, Ange is unlikely to see anything like this amount of action, but if he is going to spend some of our money in January, he will want to make the most of the break in Celtic action this month and next.

I’m in the glass half full camp and expect us to improve as the season progresses, but the squad is perilously thin in places.  Reinforcements in January will be crucial for whoever wins the league.  This is an important fortnight for Ange and his scouts.

  1. Sevcoites Balogun and Aribo started on Nigeria team in losing effort at home to Central African Republic, with Bassey on the bench.

  2. 6’ 3” Malian center forward Ibrahim Kone, now playing with Sarpsburg in Norway, scores hat trick before half time in World Cup qualifier versus Kenya.

Tam Rogic substituted after 63 for Mooy.

  3. Should have said that big Tam, like Kyogo, was thankfully not injured. But with Oman pressing, he was looking more and more like a luxury. Mooy already looking a lot more energetic in harassing the Omanis.

Are you sure that you are a bean counter / really sure?

    Fiscal stability since 94 …

You are not putting the Tech in a good light.

  5. Aaron Mooy looks a class player. Relieves pressure when Aussies under the gun. 15 minutes left fir Aussies to stay equal with Saudis at top of table.

  6. NT U21’s — OMG they are poor and then some.

Not sure if it is the coaching or the XBox addiction.

No first touch / no nous or game intelligence / no vision.

A couple of good moves but we are rearing a nation of never will be’s.

    Physical and emotional pygmies.

I didn’t think we could be that bad.

  7. Newcastle fans remind me of huns.

    Deserve all they get.

As they say. Better the devil you know

  8. Aussies 3-1 up, in 88 minutes. Big Tam’s team 6 points ahead of Kyogo’s after 3 games. They meet next.

    Fiscal stability since 94 …

Apart from the KD / JB splurge in 99 — agent friendly but football poor.

Apart from the MON splurge 2000 till 2002 — at least it involved some good players.

Apart from the overdraft crisis of 2001 when DD had to offer a personal guarantee to the bank.

Apart from the 2001/02 rights issue that needed DD putting the hat round his pals.

Apart from the 2004/05 implosion that maxxed out the club’s lending streams.

Apart from the 2005/06 emergency rights issue.

Apart from the 2010 / 2016 epidemic of GTF money to get rid of a never ending list of overpaid duds.

Apart from the debacle of throwing AMcG out the door to balance the books.

Apart from the 2012 change from a buying club to a selling club — still going strong.

Apart from the £20mill paid to PL in wages / pension bonuses.

Apart from the £120mill of CL money that we have missed out on due to gross mismanagement.

Apart from the winter 2021 transfer window where we sold young JF to balance the books and get PL his last bonus.

Apart from the summer 2021 transfer window where we need a full rebuild but managed to sell twice as much as we bought.

Yes we rally have been a well run / fiscally stable club …

In your bean counting / rich man loving eyes only.

  14. Final call for anyone prepared to support the Garry Duncan fundraising !!!

through supporting the family financially to deal with the sudden loss of their Dad, a loving Grandad, and a great friend of our community.

We have reached the £3000 target, originally set, so huge thanks to all contributors to date

Although The average cost for a funeral is around £5000

And this support / fundraising will go a long way in supporting the family, deal with the unplanned costs associated with Garry’s sad passing.

    🙏🙏🙏

Please support if at all possible :::::

The CQN/Sentinelcelts community, and the many friends of Garry Duncan aka Delaneys Dunky, would like to commemorate Garry’s life and friendship as well pay respect to his recent untimely passing.

We have had many great suggestions from you on how we best commerate Garry’s life, including flowers, a memorial brick, donation to Mary’s meals and financial support for the family etc.

Garry’s family, like so many others in our world today, is not a rich family and find their wealth is through the happiness of the family, so to have the burden of not only laying Garry to rest, but also the cost that goes with it is horrific .

Having spoken with Garry’s son Ryan, we feel it appropriate to pass any monies raised direct to the family to let them decide the best way to use it

Anyone who wants to support the family in leaving a long lasting commemoration in honour of Garry can do so through making a donation via bank transfer to

o Account name: Walk With Shay

  16. NorrieM,

I Loved the Pool Tourney in Kirkcaldy travelling with the Happy Mad Man.

Garry was the most Generous Man in a lot more ways than 1 but he wisnae living the life of luxury.

If you can help out Ryan and G-Thangs family, that would be Great.

    Rest in Peace Garry

I dinnae ken where ma Green T-shirt is, the wan I wore when we walked along that deserted street in Belfast going to meet the Bhoys. I will try and find it for your Funeral.

The Aussie Pink Floyd gig in Belfast was my first ever sitting down concert with G-Thang, sadly my last.

  17. Wonder if the Geordies who are currently singing and dancing along the Gallowgate will feel the same way in 12 months time.?

If Spurs and Arsenal can only dream of a place in the top four, where does that leave the likes of Newcastle Utd.

  18. An Tearmann earlier re Michael Davitt, lovely post thanks.

As for some (not all, but some…) of the rest of the blog tonight it’s like reading something written by the bastard child of James Joyce and Hunter Thompson who’s drunk a quart of blind man’s tequila with a dash of mescalin.

  19. park the bus n blootir it on

How many games have we won/lost since Taylor got injured ?

When Taylor played for Kilmarnock they had a bus parked in front of defence, so players like Taylor were part of a team that didn’t get exposed too much at the back, even Brendan’s Celtic in one game at Rugby Park couldn’t muster a shot at goal until 87th minute due to Steve Clarke’s cautious formation, making fans think Killie defenders must be good. Any defender would look good if they had hardly any defending to do.

But put him into a Celtic team, especially one in decline after Brendan’s departure, and in all likelihood that defender will be exposed in a defence that doesn’t have protection in front of it from midfielders.
