Postecoglou and planning for January

206

It was revealing that days ahead of the international break, the subject of the January transfer window tripped off Ange Postecoglou tongue.  It is as though he spent much of the previous week planning ahead.

When you manage a team that competes in Europe your availability to scout players in person is very limited.  Most of the work is delegated out, supplemented by TV coverage, but the latter will only ever tell part of the story.

Club managers have been known to take in eight games over an international break.  With travel restrictions still in place, Ange is unlikely to see anything like this amount of action, but if he is going to spend some of our money in January, he will want to make the most of the break in Celtic action this month and next.

I’m in the glass half full camp and expect us to improve as the season progresses, but the squad is perilously thin in places.  Reinforcements in January will be crucial for whoever wins the league.  This is an important fortnight for Ange and his scouts.

  1. GT is following his Managers instruction to the letter… jot and tittle, Adam is gonnae be the Numero Uno Jam& Spoon anyway. Ange is strengthening Celtics Squad.

Is GT ok being a backup?

  2. Greg Taylor seems to be the only player who doesn’t appear to have got better while out of the team .

Instead of continually criticising Greg for not being good enough, should those who decided to sign him ( whoever they were such is the secrecy at the club) not be the ones who should on the receiving end of the criticism ?

We all have our differing opinions on our players but Ange’s opinion of them is the one that matters the most.

  3. @pete..jvr… I posted yonks ago that young G T leaves everything out on the park..

Watch him …every game he gives it all….

It might not be what’s needed ….But by god he tries…

  4. Fairhill Buoy,

Yes.Liked him at Killie.Like him with us.An absolute machine she will bomb up and down the park all game.Gives great support to our midfield in opposition half.Calmac especially plays much better with Taylor.Passes out of defence very well, and he CAN cross balls.Biggest problem in that respect, has been a shortage of strikers scoring from them, therefore go unnoticed.

If I am wrong, get back to me,but he will be Ange’s 1st pick when fit.

I listened to the comments when Laxalt came in.After a few games, most, not me,raving about him.We know how that worked out.The managers like him, even Clarke gave him his 1st cap when at Killie.

This is only my opinion but its backed by every manager who has managed him.

Them or the closed minds of some on here?

What I see is a very good player with incredible work rate.

  5. Another thing. At the moment Montgomery is nowhere near the finished article.Talk of Taylor being his back up,only for the deluded.

High hopes for the boy,but not for a while.Anyway,we will see who’s opinion of Taylor the manager agrees with.

  6. Drambowiecelt, every Celtic team has had one player who a lot of fans think isn’t good enough , Greg is our current one . As you said , his effort and willingness are never in doubt. I like that. As Petec mentioned he follows Ange’s instructions . Greg and all the players need our backing especially this season.

There are weaknesses in his game that can’t be denied and when Ange can sign a better player for left back or maybe has in Liam Scales , Greg won’t be first choice anymore.

  7. GREIG….mmm…

not to sure about that he is learning and at a fast rate….

I wish the bhoy all the best…… check the spelling..

    I before.. e

  8. park the bus n blootir it on

I don’t think many defenders will get protection in a team that plays with 2 wingers and expects its 2 full backs to bomb forward, and the manager insists upon a high pressing game.

All it takes is a mugging away to Livi to bring the house down.

Not to mention mibbery when needed.

Playing with one recognised striker in Kyogo, and a lesser quality Ajeti is the option if Kyogo gets injured.

The big Greek made an appearance and “hugged” the touchline !!!

McCarthy is a mibees aye, mibees naw, type of signing where Celtic seemed to be the only club interested, and don’t tell me Ange signed and scouted him, Ange will say what he’s told to say as was agreed when he signed his NDA, which you must sign or you don’t become the Celtic manager.

The slow lane control the club lock stock and barrel.

PL is King until he and his slow lane frauds are removed by boycotting fans but Celtic doesn’t have those types of fans anymore, as the age of university graduated snowflakes are hollowing out what’s left of Celtic’s soul, and they’ve been doing this since their non reaction to Celtic PLC/slow lanes meek acceptance of LNS onwards.

  9. Kev ..We are only a moment in our clubs history…..No amount of rantin…….

Will change that…..You are out of touch with the young team…..

To keep looking backwards ….Drags us down down….

When you and i are gone ..This wonderful gift to to so many families….

Will be an inspiration to so many Celts….

Keep well and enjoy The Tic every game

  10. : All it takes is a muggin away to livi”???

    You think so?????

    Watch us go…….

And come back wae that quote .

  11. Good morning all Celtic fans around the globe from a dark and wet Garngad

Greig Taylor?? Yes he is probably our 1st choice left back at the moment and to be fair he was doing ok before his injury, but by god the bhoy could not cross the road never mind a ball.

We should not be accepting mediocrisy or is this how far we have fallen.

As I say he was playing ok before his injury, I would have him trying to get by the full back and wrap his foot around the ball and cross it all day in training. Practice, practice, practice.

  12. Good Morning Celts – Fresh Autumn Morn In The Chilterns…

Interesting interview in The Athletic; John Parks interviewed by Kieran Devlin, much of it featuring his time at Celtic and the moneyball years.

Tad one sided as you’d expect but a good insightful piece – JP did some sterling work.

My thoughts are, with a Director of Football and proper development science, coaching and pathways a successful period could have been extraordinary.

As Mr Parks said himself, fourteen years ago Celtic were ahead of the game in analytics.

  13. BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW

The Premier League approved the takeover after receiving “legally binding assurances” that the Saudi state would not control the club.

That is despite the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, being listed as the chair of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which will provide 80% of funds for the deal.

The Saudi Arabian state has been accused of human rights abuses, but with the majority owner PIF deemed a separate entity, and an alleged piracy dispute with Qatar-based broadcaster beIN Sports, settled, there was no longer an impediment to the takeover, in the Premier League’s view.

I find the faux outrage of some supporters, journalists etc. in England quite funny in this regard. While there is no doubt that the Saudi regime is a cold hearted, criminal gang dressed up as a Royal house (sound familiar?) what’s the difference between them and all the other (allegedly) criminal gangs, gangsters and dodgy ‘States’ which own other clubs in England? If you sup with the devil……..

  15. Some may be wondering why this CBC situation is looming large now after only being talked about for a number of years. It is another ‘kick on the teeth’ in our downward trajectory since 9iar and the quad treble. COVID, loss of honours & the fiasco surrounding our manager/players – now this – they do say things come in threes.

Thompson Solicitors have been putting together a case against us for a number of years, and have been encouraged & bolstered by the stream of convictions of e.g. Torbett… etc, in the criminal courts. However a consolidated case can only now be put forward as the bill to allow Class Actions under Scottish Law in Scottish courts has just recently been rubber-stamped at Holyrood. The lawyers have been biding their time, whilst no doubt lobbying for the said bill to appear on the Scottish Government statute book as soon as possible. The case against Celtic will be the first of its kind and will command widespread media coverage. The damage to our reputation and standing as a world-renowned club can only be imagined. This Damiclean sword has been hanging over our club for the past ten years. I am sure that the prospect of bringing upward of 25, 50, infividual cases to court put off many in the legal profession, now a single action can be instituted thanks to a change in the law.

Patrick Maguire of Thompson appears confident that many more ‘genuine victims’ & compensation-seeking claimants can be added to the twenty-five currently signed-up. I have no doubt this will be the case – we have seen it all graphically in the many “#me too’ cases raised and successfully fought in the US. There has also been talk of a separate US class action suit against Celtic in the States by former CBC members now residing there. This is very worrying as the damages awarded Stateside in these kind of cases are astronomical compared to what we see in this country.

Be in no doubt, this is an existential issue for Celtic and when it crystallises, will dominate the narrative surrounding our club. This is a poisoned legacy left by former custodians of our club and will have to be dealt with by our current much-criticised board. Who knows the business expertise and connections of the so-called “Tories”(rubbish) on our board, may be integral in the fight to minimise the damage to our club.

Winning honours and CL/EL qualification may be the least of our worries in the next few years.

  16. KDS last night — I know / I know — strange story about a second hand washing machine.

Seemingly a request went in for an extra washing machine for L/town last season.

PL got involved — as he is want to do about everything at the club — and said no.

Plan B then was a second hand washing machine that was available — PL again says no.

By all accounts this was the way of everything 20/21 — no money spent on anything.

It seems to be part of the “you couldn’t make it up” vibe that haunts our efforts last season.

Not sure if PL is tight or he is just protecting his final bonus but we were not a functioning football club.

Then there was a pile on regarding how unprofessional we are at the moment.

Want some web stuff done / social media output — why use professionals when we have someone’s son available as he has just finished at the Tech.

    And there was more …

Badly run bowling club just about sums us up.

No surprise then that DMcK blew town after 10 weeks.

We are useless / hopeless / clueless in equal measure.

That is what happens when you put a low rent / second rate property bean counter in charge.

All ego and nothing else / unconscious incompetent and how we are paying for it.

  17. The question must be asked, so I am asking it – did the prospect of the CBC case play any part in the “personal decision” of DM to walk away?

  18. Certain people and organisations are clutching at straws.

They see an very large income stream and they are trying all they can to get involved.

If the facts are a bit thin then you use publicity to advance your case.

    Heat rather than light.

Not a great place to be but it might be all you have.

Good Morning Celts – Fresh Autumn Morn In The Chilterns…

As Mr Parks said himself, fourteen years ago Celtic were ahead of the game in analytics.

    —————–

I remember Gordon Strachan bringing in sports scientists back then , to good effect. Specific case was McGeady who asked what he could do to get more speed – he would beat his man but the man would catch him back up. The results in the next season were devastating and effectively got him player of the year and his subsequent big money move to Russia. He did regress to being skilful and slow pretty quickly after that

    Hail Hail

There are many on here who claim that speed can’t be coached.

Total tripe but for some reason too many believe it.

GT / AM both need speed coaching.

What nature has provided is not enough.

  21. As someone with a wee soft spot for Newcastle (son married Geordie lass) and who has enjoyed numerous visits to the city and the football ground, I react in dismay about two things.

First the outrageous Saudi nonsense (as outlined by others above).

Second the idea that Slippy could go anywhere near them. I assume that is just media urine, because so far he has succeeded in winning only one-in-nine competitions up here, despite spending more than all the other clubs (bar Celtic) in total. Great player though he was, he shows little mettle or ability when it comes to management (IMO of course).

Will have to visit Sunderland for my NE fix in future!
