Premiership takes familiar shape with a green exception

517

It was good to get our business out of the way on Friday night before what turned out to be an interesting weekend, as the Scottish Premiership adopted a familiar look. Aberdeen did well to come from behind away to Ross County. They will not challenge for top spot, but their grip on second place looks to be in rude health.

The major questions is, is there a genuine challenge from Hibs for the remaining European spots? Their win at Ibrox, also coming from behind, suggests Neil Lennon has instilled an important ingredient of success: attitude. Not every opponent will be as defensively porous as Newco. Nor will they always face a self-defeating pantomime of a stadium.

The test for Neil will come when his team faces disciplined defensive formations – like Ross County, the only side who have prevented Hibs from scoring this season.

St Johnstone are the only other team on full points, however, they have the benefit of starting the season earlier than those who didn’t have European football, so I wouldn’t read too much into their wins against Motherwell and Kilmarnock. Their 0-3 League Cup tanking at home to Partick Thistle may be more indicative of the season ahead.

  1. I wonder what crap Doncaster told Joe O’Rourke at the meeting last night ?

Wonder if meeting was taped by Joe ?

Wonder if we shall find out today ?

  2. They can bleat and complain to the police, SMSM, SFA etc… all they want about NFL’s antics, ultimately the thing that really hurt was the ball hitting the back of the net.

Every time they chant their vile by the 1000 (which mysteriously isn’t noticed by the very same police, SMSM, SFA etc…) just plant that ball in the back of the net. Nothing says GIRFUY better than that!

I fully understand Armstrong may want to leave.. to be honest there is no loyalty in football..if he played crap 3 games in a row Celtic would consign him to reserve duties quick enough..so facing a doubling of wages why wouldnt he give it serious thought?

However I think hes had more than enough time. I suspect his decision is made. If he was staying wed more than likely have been told. If he is departing two things come into play..

    1. Pre CL qualifying feel good factor

    2. Timing for last minute transfer poker faced extortion

My sense is that the announcement is being delayed not the decision.

Bobby., the Pat Stanton article in the Hootsmon the other day , was very enjoyable.

Pat would be in the top 5 of Hibs’ greatest ever players but the article conveyed how much pleasure he derived playing for us and the respect he had for us.

He has gone up even higher in my estimation now .

Griff is a Hibby too but bhoy is he doing a great job for us.

  5. West End of East End: I doubt you will have any problems catching Celtic’s match on Wednesday. I’m sure all pubs with a tv will show it and it is also being shown be Network 2, the national broadcaster.

So glad I kept my moniker – knew it would come in handy one day.

It is frustrating having to wait til after qualifying to sign better players, but it”s just something we have to live with.

Leads me to conclude there is a chance we could sign Paddy if we qualify for Champs League. Maybe Man City could accept that as they want him tested against top opposition

My kid sis is fed up wi listening to me about Pat Stanton. But she trusts your judgement!!!

Mind you,our memories may be enhanced by thinking about his replacements…

Griff? Love him playing for us nearly as much as he does. I hope it continues, and he stays long enough to get a testimonial.

  8. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bobby, my dad was very glad we signed him. He always rated him as a player.

In my mind we never really had a top notch centre back until Paul Elliott arrived then the next best was Marc Reiper .

Martin brought in good centre backs.

Virgil and Jozo have been our best over the last 5 years.

Griff is turning into a very good forward and loves playing for us.

  9. Excitement , fear, trepidation, anticipation, angst.

Just some of the random emotions felt in the build up to tomorrow’s massive tie v Astana.

I know we should beat them but as explained earlier, qualification ties are to be endured not enjoyed.

Only the result counts. Anything to zero will be good.

Got a nagging feeling re Griff.

Last year when big Jozo had a dodgy ankle, was the first tackle on him not over the top, straight on his ankle? Was that against Astana?

Should the Griff’s calf expect similar treatment?

  10. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bobby, in my last post I meant to add , since Pat retired we didk not have another top notch centre back until Paul Elliott.

An honourable mention to Mick McCarthy , not the greatest of players bur he made his presence felt especially against Crawford Baptie. Lol

  11. Bobby- re. Pat Stanton. Best goal I ever saw live was Pat scoring against Malmo in Malmo circa 1970. Hibs had won the first leg 6 or 7 nil. We were in Malmo as first leg of European trip as 19 year old dafties. Joe McBride saw us wearing Celtic scarfs and gave us tickets for the game. Game itself was pretty rubbish till Hibs got a corner. Ball cleared to Pat who let rip with a beauty. Keeper saved it but ball rebounded to Pat. Another great shot on the run, another fine save but this time the ball loops up in the air. The bold Pat didn’t break a stride as he hammered home a header into the net. What a player. As is often said, the only mistake Big Jock made was not taking Pat with him when he joined us.

    * Should say best goal from an aesthetic point of view. Every goal for The ‘Tic is a best goal.

Ibrox is indeed becoming a dangerous place.

The problem at TRFC is that their position in the pecking order is liable to be long term. The thought of playing second fiddle is not one that sits easily, and it’s sitting even more uncomfortably because of who is sitting above them.

It is my genuine belief that what you have is no different to the supremacist situation in the USA. There is a sense of supremacy and entitlement, embedded in a very large section of that club and its followers. They have even got their new manager buying into the siege mentality.

There are very few countries in the modern world that wouldn’t expose this for what it is. Sadly, many in positions of influence in Scotland, harbour the same inward feelings . The government, police and media are all complicit to varying degrees.

    Therein is the biggest challenge.

We need a strong and honest government and police force. It is unlikely ever to materialise, regardless of the political party in power.

The footballing controlling bodies are equally lame. Domestically and globally. SFA, Uefa, FIFA. Celtic and the other Scottish clubs must shoulder some responsibility too. They must act and speak out.

What chances are there of a politician, an MP, media member, law member and clubs combining to address this? Practically zero. Too many votes lost, too much personal wealth to endanger.

So we ‘move on’ with the status quo, and the longer Celtic dominate, the more dangerous it becomes.

Until such times of course that the activists see their perceived natural order resume.

The reaction on Saturday to the sight of a ” fenian B putting one over on the peepul was a sight too far for the supremacist race.

There is worse to come. The next decision which goes against them is likely to ensure the level of reaction is increased 10 fold.

    Worrying times.

  13. ‘Lennon’ doesn’t seen to have a first name ,if you check out the BBC Scotland website,

  14. By the way , going off at a slight tangent, the worst thing that could happen TO ra peepul, to further slow the recovery OF ra peepul, is video technology.

Mark my words, it’ll kill their main route back to the top. With the introduction of this technology, a large percentage of their unfair advantage dies.

  15. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bada, I would not expect anything else from the BBC and our media . Its appalling .

  16. I suppose if ra peepul make their way back to the top there is a positive aspect:

Reduced knife crime, fewer damaged chapels . I’m sure there are more. Anyhow, better get back to the tiller…..

Or is it more to the point that you know only too damned well how vile & violent the follow followers of Sevco FC actually are and are thus extremely worried that they will shame themselves and Sevco and Scotland yet again.

    ———————————————————-

We didn’t hear much about it after they initially floated the idea. At the time I thought it couldn’t possibly happen – all those “volunteer” fans would require SIA accreditation to perform the role of a “proper” steward. All those volunteers would be able to do is give directions and information, and therefore not perform the security aspects of the role.

If that is the case and they have put in place more information point type volunteers at the expense of accredited stewards then the place should be shut down.

  28. glendalystonsils on

Indeed, did Celtic not blame the closing of Section 111 on saftety certificate concerns? In which case the concerns must have been raised by Police Scotland and GCC. Yet, at Ibrox we see open racism, objects regularly thrown on to the pitch, regular incursions on to the field of play but not a peep about safety concerns?
