Principled resignations, ASA withdraw adjudication

1739

I cannot fathom why someone would leak their intentions to quit as chairman of a football club.  Either Walter Smith is sufficiently alarmed by the conduct of his club to resign, or he should be busy working to resolve matters.  Leaking that he intends to resign will surely only add to the nonsense that surrounds the club.

Some will believe that Smith, who accepted the position as chairman of Rangers International when season tickets went on sale in May, can shuffle of the scene now 34,000 tickets have been sold.  Shareholder votes will determine the future of the club, in this instance, the identity of the chairman has little reach beyond parting fans with their cash.

Some investors may consider a more immediate problem is why the club are burning a hugely disproportionate amount of cash to secure promotion from the third tier of Scottish football, and why a management structure is not in place to deploy resources more effectively.

In light of Francisco Sandaza’s off-the-cuff comments to Tommy in Glasgow, and his subsequent dismissal by Rangers International, we urge Mr McCoist to be more cautious than he was after his team’s spirited, but ultimately fruitless, performance in Forfar on Saturday.  It would be unfortunate if McCoist transgressed a condition of employment and suffered accordingly.

Advertising Standards Authority ruling withdrawn

It doesn’t rain but it pours.  The Independent Review Process of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has looked into the ASA’s recent, and widely reported, ruling on Rangers International’s claim on football titles won by a liquidated club. The Review found that “it was a procedural flaw for the ASA to have relied on an extract only of a report sent to it by the advertiser”.

Further, the review process ruled that “there was also the risk of a substantial flaw of adjudication in the distinction that had been made between ‘club’ and ‘company’, especially in the light of previous ASA decisions about companies that change hands and the circumstances in which the new company could or could not trade off the reputation of the old company”.

The Chairman of the ASA, Lord Smith of Finsbury, as decided to reopen the ASA’s investigation into the case and to withdraw the published adjudication, which favoured the advertiser.  Withdrawing this adjudication does not infer that a different outcome will subsequently be reached.  To use a football analogy, it’s half time and they’re all square.

An interesting, and potentially critical part of the story, is that after the initial ASA decision was issued, the club’s web site noted that their submission to the process included information that a “panel of the London Stock Exchange” supported their claim.

The Stock Exchange subsequently appeared surprised at this assertion, so much so that the club promptly withdrew the claim from the web article.

“You’re history, that’s what you are, na na na na”.

  3. Ambrose has the potential to be a top top player. He just needs to sharpen up his concentration a bit . He instigated the winning goal agin Ross C with his surge from the back.

The reason he is being watched by EPL teams is because he is class .

Someone on here said the B-M-Gladbach fans were singing his praises.

We need to keep him ………but not as a mid-fielder . And he’s got to be in the back 4.

i think the point is that some folks feel that the GB actions dont merit the ground being shut down and if thats the case, maybe it would be better to attack the rule makers rather than bhoys at the game. what do you think?

celtic fans in the 70s were repeatedly warned that they would get the jail for bringing 1 quid tricolours into the jungle, but it was the rule makers who were wrong rather than the folks wi the tricolours on canes

im glad we the folks from those days didnt just do as they were told

Ok I look forward to fans uniting in the stadium and bringing a better atmosphere than the GB brought.

  7. I have just deleted a spiel about the GB v Club sotuation, but I don’t know all the inticacies and details to accomodate all the opinions, so best I think to say nothing. I would like to echo craigneuktommygemmell in saying that ” the mission statement says we are a club open to all”. I would also add that it is the fans who are The Club, and this statement we are proud of should be something we all keep in mind when supporting the club at the match, at home, on TV and when taking part in an on-line debate on CQN and elsewhere.

We can all stand with the GB, but the GB should stand with all Celtic fans, and we should all stand with the players, the coaches the staff and with the board. So we can all stand (or sit) together.

And assuming I am right (just assuming because I don’t have the book to hand) is it not a case of Goose and Gander when people object to the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia whilst others, just as sincere and principled, but not on the board but every which way an equitable Celtic supporter, object to the invasion of Iraq?

If the board play politics then don’t be surprised if educated supporters do likewise.

  15. Morning all

Kind of depressing reading all this GB stuff for a happy clapper such as myself . Sorry if that’s them gone as they did brighten things up though selfishly I won’t miss that drum much. I don’t know how much external pressure is being put on the board to end this ‘lateral movement’ and ‘moshing’ but I’d imagine it is more than is being exerted on any other club in Scotland. How dangerous it is for perhaps 300 young people ( out of 45000) to move side to side half a dozen times during the game I seriously don’t know- but I’d guess not that much. Experts enlighten me. Breaking seats is a pest and if done deliberately it’s vandalism. Is it done deliberately? Unlikely but its still a pest. Singing ‘political’ songs? Definition needed for political. Ditto ‘sectarian’. I don’t sing songs that most would consider ‘political’ but I’m not offended by anything emanating from Section 111- which was not always the case in the days of the Jungle. Are the GB mainly middle class plastic revolutionaries, daft wee boys or authentic rebels? No idea. Whatever, I’m sad this is happening sums up my feelings.

Mind you yesterday at work a female colleague said to me – apparently believing she was paying me a compliment- that I looked like a ‘cool Rangers fan who is comfortable wearing green’. So not only do I look like a Hun but I don’t exist either.

Wonder where i have heard the statement below before…………………….every inquiry which has been held involving our friends from Govan have difficulty with communications

The inquiry has taken some time to complete,

partly due to the difficulty of obtaining

information from some of the parties involved in

    a complex and fluid situation.

  18. I think if we get through this game you will see a few bodies in after.

    Please win this Celtic.

  19. A Stor, most Celtic supporters were not interested in Reid’s part in a war. The overwhelming majority of Celtic supporters will carry on supporting Celtic. The CT and GB are minority interests.

  20. Count me out I am a Celtic Supporter, nothing bad to anyone else, the GB are who they are but I am not one of them, I know how to behave myself, (till I get lashed) but not at the game well not since I was on the Lanny, but that was many moons ago when I peed in the jaggy edged beer can , oh the thought of it.

You’re last post went over my head, was there a point to it being relevant to me.

  23. I dont think the board want rid of the Green Brigade. Looking at their background I doubt our board have any sympathy with their politics at all.

But even if they are all hardheaded Monty Burns style businessmen they still see that they create an atmosphere that attracts young supporters and creates a buzz about Celtic. And Celtic sells itself abroad based on the Celtic Park atmosphere.

They create an image that sells the club. You can see that image creeping into Celtics own merchandising. You could call it symbiotic or hypocritical on the part of the board. Either way I reckon Celtic must like the free marketing and would like to accommodate them.

Ye see, here’s the thing – when the Celtic bored announce that they have grown a collective pair of you know what’s and ban the DR instead of bringing oot the pea-shooter and banning Hugh Keevins – it’s at ‘that’ point that I’ll back the bored by not buying that paper.

But, I don’t think ‘that’ day will ever arrive.

I don’t like / trust the Celtic bored – not the present bored – not the previous bored – and not the bored of the future because – having Celtic bored’s means that – Cellic fans DON’T / own or control THEIR club. Just the way that I see it.

Celtic is the fans and Celtic won’t be Celtic until the fans own it – if that makes any sense :)

Having looked carefully at the whole situation,

OSCR has not found that the ongoing risks to

I actually think its shameful that the club use pictures of their displays, put their song lyrics on tshirts and use clips of the section for marketing purposes after how they have treated them and allowed them to be treated by the police in Celtic Park these past few years.

  33. As I see it the Green Brigade want it to be all about them and not Celtic Football Club.

To the warning that the stadium might be closed due to breeches of H&S, their answer is tough.

To the news that 190 seats have been broken in the last 4 matches their reply is lies, dammed lies.

To the news that the club could be fined by UEFA (AGAIN) for their actions (AGAIN) they say tough.

So here is the question (and I’m only half joking) are they actually Celtic fans or do they love only themselves?

It is your decision to buy the Daily Record and your decision alone.

If you are happy buying a tabloid with such a blatant anti-Celtic agenda that is your choice – and it is your choice – don’t try and blame the board.
