Proof that top level football is not always great

807

Yesterday was not a particularly good day for football.  The Edinburgh cup final was played before a half empty Hampden long before the end and Chelsea’s revival of catenaccio secured the Champions League.  If nothing else the latter proved that football at the very top level is not always great.  Perhaps the reason why truly great teams are so celebrated.

There is an interesting dynamic to Rangers in administration.  Creditors have a cash offer of around £8.5m to consider but eight players, Naismith, Bocanegra, McGregor, David, Whittaker, Goian, Lafferty and Edu cut release clause deals with Duff and Phelps for values greater than this.

Any CVA agreed next month (unlikely though it is) could be paid for by the departure of these players.  Charles Green could potentially be the second person to buy Rangers for only £1.

It is, however, unlikely that other clubs will offer money for these players before a CVA is agreed as they will be available as free agents should the CVA fail and those in control of Ibrox attempt to form a Newco.  Therefore, the chances of creditors getting their hands on any of these transfer fees are limited, no matter what happens to the company.

Regarding the crowd. Think it was 15,000. Behind the goal at love st end it was not full. You could see the terracing barriers

I was at the love st end one night in 1980 where there was 27,000 in the ground.

    I remember it well m8.

It was a SC replay game and, we got reduced to ten men when, McAdam or Doyle was sent-off.

What I remember about it was the crowd outside the park….there must have been 5-10k of Celtic fans locked-outside.

I didn’t get in myself until about 35mins I think.

Yet another victory with Ten Men!

Cheers, yup great night from memory. ( this dementias great, canny remember what a had for my breakfast but can remember a game nearly 30 years ago :) )

  11. Love St 86. mate of mine turned up and was outside the Celtic end with hundreds (or more) ticketless fans. Apparently a builders van turned up, and some guy got out carrying a large set of bolt cutters. he then snipped the chain and padlock that was holding the exit gates shut, allowing hundreds to flood in to the Celtic end without tickets – including my mate. Probably highly dangerous given the hillsborough situation etc, but certainly that day there were a lot more fans in the ground than had tickets.

  14. I think our defence has been more than decent. Early on in the season we were not defending as a team. We did the same at the start of last season as well. The defence can be the best in the world but if they receive no cover or support from the rest of the team it won’t matter. Our midfield is now working much harder. Even Hooper, Stokes, Sammi & Commons are all closing down players well. If you look at the huns, they’ve had Cuellar, Broadfoot, Bougerra, Weir, Goian, Bartley, McCulloch all playing in central defence & have defended well- can you really say ANY of those players are better than our defenders? The huns are a counter attacking team by nature & defend in numbers as a team- sometimes we don’t do that quite as well. I think Lenny is now successfully instilling the message that you have to have hard work off the ball, pressing, supporting each other…& defending as a unit from front to back.

  15. Luxcelt it was pay at the gate

Kev I too was outside for 35 mins or so, Aitken got sent off and we were one nil down by the time I squeezed behind the goal at the love st end

    Great game great atmosphere

You remember that but will quickly forget the champions league final the other night

As long as it was the same score :)))

  19. Whether something is a myth or based on truth is pointless.

If we accept a myth as true now & use it to create something better then it can only be a good thing.

What difference does it make if its factually true or false?

Facts are overrated. They change all the time.

If that was Celtic yesterday we would have had thousands turning up as we don’t expect favours the way they do. What we have wasn’t handed to us.

It makes you wonder why, after, as you point out, what we have…ie- the stadium built by Celtic fans money….why then, do we/the board not do something about the huns trying to wreck the stadium with, evidence all over the internet and, mentioned in some msm reports ?

Or, do we put the attempted wrecking of the stadium on the back-burner until, we see whats going to happen with the Dark-Side ?

The toxicity levels involved in the hun case can’t be under estimated. IMO!

So Advocaat and McLeish failed to win all the SPL titles available to them, even though the club were cheating with the prime goal of winning the league?!

I’d hate to be in that appraisal.

Murray: So, we gave you millions, some of which was due to the taxman, we cooked the books and we played ineligible players, yet we lost the league to a Celtic team who played within the rules?

Advocaat: So what? Fine me! (but only on the portion declared in my contract)…

Without wishing to get involved in the sadly heated & totally irrelevent spat with regard to our club’s wonderful name, I am fairly certain that Willie Maley always insisted that Brother Walfred WAS trying to be inclusive with his choice of the name.

WM also tells us that our founding father ALWAYS called them KELTIC.

I am sure that Willie Maley would know as much about the subject as our CQN combatants.
