Proof that top level football is not always great

807

Yesterday was not a particularly good day for football.  The Edinburgh cup final was played before a half empty Hampden long before the end and Chelsea’s revival of catenaccio secured the Champions League.  If nothing else the latter proved that football at the very top level is not always great.  Perhaps the reason why truly great teams are so celebrated.

There is an interesting dynamic to Rangers in administration.  Creditors have a cash offer of around £8.5m to consider but eight players, Naismith, Bocanegra, McGregor, David, Whittaker, Goian, Lafferty and Edu cut release clause deals with Duff and Phelps for values greater than this.

Any CVA agreed next month (unlikely though it is) could be paid for by the departure of these players.  Charles Green could potentially be the second person to buy Rangers for only £1.

It is, however, unlikely that other clubs will offer money for these players before a CVA is agreed as they will be available as free agents should the CVA fail and those in control of Ibrox attempt to form a Newco.  Therefore, the chances of creditors getting their hands on any of these transfer fees are limited, no matter what happens to the company.

My greatest ever moment as a Celtic supporter. Love Street in ’86 comes second. Winning in Seville would have went to the top of the list, but alas it was not to be

If the Gods are with us, we will make another Euro final in my lifetime, and this time we will win it!

Santos clinch Mexican championshipReuters, Monday May 21 2012

May 21 (Reuters) – Santos Laguna won the Mexican championship with a 2-1 home victory over Monterrey in the second leg of the Clausura final.

Santos, runners-up in the Apertura in December, won 3-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in Thursdays first leg at Monterrey.

Midfielder Daniel Luduena put Santos ahead after five minutes and striker Oribe Peralta scored the decisive second in the 64th, with Jesus de Nigris pulling one back 12 minutes from time in Sundays match at the Corona in the city of Torreon.

Peralta has been the key for Santos, scoring the two late goals that gave them victory over Apertura winners Tigres UANL in the second leg of their semi-final last weekend and also finding the net in both legs of the final.

“Im now at the most important stage in my career (but) I have a lot of dreams still to fulfil, the 28-year-old told reporters.

“I still have a contract here for several years and I hope to stay on,” added the former Monterrey player when asked about interest from other clubs.

It was Monterrey coach Victor Vucetich’s first defeat in 13 finals. He steered his team to the CONCACAF Champions League title this season.

Santos became the first team since 2007 to win the championship, decided in an eight-team knockout phase, having finished top of the 17-match league stage.

Been reading CQN for a while, but not posted till now. Live down South and the news down here is remarkably thin.  Last week’s appeal decision did not even get a mention on the morning radio sports bulletins. Luckily I knew where to look.

This may have been pointed out before- sorry if I am repeating:

Many have commented that they have not had the decency to admit fault and simply say they are sorry.

But wouldn’t that amount to an “act of contrition”?

It’s in one of the Campbell and Woods books. My memory has now deteriorated to the extent that I can no longer provide a verbatim quote off the top of my head.

The bottom line though is that the claim about the reason why the name Celtic was chosen is supposition. There is no evidence to support it.

Brewing with malted barley is slightly harder, but the beer will taste soooo much better, well worth the effort.

Been away for long enough, but any home brew shop will see you right.

You could try and make your own champange, get a small bucket full of elderflower heads, cover them in boiling water, when the water has cooled, add a champagne yeast, a bag of sugar, make up to a couple of gallons with warm water, wait a couple of weeks and bottle,

Always check with a hydromiter tho, don’t want to bottle too early.

  17. I really don’t know how exacltly we came to have the name Celtic but couldnt think of a better name in world football. I love the fact that we dont have Town, United, City etc etc in our name. We are bigger than that. Oh and we won’t ever have to change our name, due to cheating our way to winning titles and trophys.

Decorated with the usual tat —- Guinness stuff, Younger’s beer stuff, whisky adverts/ Stag’s heads, tartan stuff, spinning wheels, Braveheart stuff, Loch Ness Monster stuff and a big framed picture of Brian Laudrup in a Rangers strip..

Couldn’t resist asking the Albanian behind the bar —– Why the Laudrup photo ?

” Rangers are Irish -no ?”

  21. Ernie, I have no problem with that but you must admit you do have a tendency to lean heavy on the cynical. Can I take it from your reply that you did indeed make a statement of fact that you can neither prove nor disprove but you ridiculed anyway?

Also, I am now curious, do you mind defining for me my ‘prejudices’ that you referred to earlier?

    Just a genuine curiosity.

  22. LOYAL Rangers fans raised nearly £70,000 today for the Fighting Fund when they took part in the 1872 Walk around Ibrox.

Led by former manager Walter Smith, Barcelona 72 legends Colin Stein and Alfie Conn, nine in a row hero Mark Hateley and fans’ favourite Nacho Novo they created a party atmosphere in the Glasgow sunshine.

Nearly 600 supporters walked twice around the perimeter of the stadium starting outside Argyle House and then entered the ground through the Copland Road gates and made their way around the track before finishing at the tunnel.

    Wow 600 bears walking in the sunshine including Alfie Conn??/?;

I remember making the short hop to Paisley on the supporters bus that used to leave from the Stanley Bar in Kinning Park. Nobody on the bus thought we would win the league that day. Aside from us winning (which everyone knew we would) it was the fact Hearts not only had to lose but we had to win by 3 clear goals. Myself and my pals were up near the segregation fence and it was absolute chaos as we raced into a 4 goal lead by half time. As time wore on we started making our way towards the exit and stood by the floodlight pylon closest to the Celtic end for the last 10mins. A guy in front of us had a small transistor radio and he just started screaming yes, yes, yes!! Suddenly the whole ground started going ballistic. Remember ex Hun goalie Jim Stewart just standing with the ball looking around, wondering WTF was going on?

Great memories and a special, special day

”The naming of our world famous club as “Celtic” is a clear and important insight of his visionary thinking….and is sure testimony to his commitment in developing a cultural bridge.”

The myth that the name Celtic was chosen because it encompassed both Ireland and Scotland is just that – a myth. There’s no evidence to support the claim and the evidence that is put forward is wrong (in the 19th century the word Celtic was generally used to mean Irish, not Scottish , and the name Celtic had been used previously by other clubs).

It was a piece of supposition by Brian Wilson (and possibly also Gerry McNee, I don’t recall). It of course suited the agenda at the time of Wilson’s book, which should have been a warning sign for the critically alert.

Brother Walfrid may have been a visionary, though the fact he was sidelined at the earliest opportunity by the money men at Celtic suggests otherwise, but it’s wrong to try to assume that he had the same outlook and preoccupations that we curently have.

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    2010 Never Again

So from what you are suggesting Ernie….Brother Walfrid in choosing the name Celtic did so without there being any real significance to it….other than a probable Irish connection?

you can buy a ‘pay-as-you-go’ dongle at any vodafone shop. I got one last year whilst working in Santander, from memory it was around 30 euros with a months interweb subscription, although I think there is also a 14 day option. You should be able to find the price plans on the Spanish vodafone website.

Haven’t seen any mention of the orange band providing the music at the Hun walk yesterday. Funny that!

So a few hundred Huns turn up to help their club, to me that is further proof that most of them don’t support their club, they support the “culture” and hatred of Catholic/Irish.

If that was Celtic yesterday we would have had thousands turning up as we don’t expect favours the way they do. What we have wasn’t handed to us.

the Greenock Shammy busses went as usual, as we had all season, I think 3 bus on the day. The official attendance was 16,000. Mostly Tims.

I take it that was the pub goers.
