Proof that top level football is not always great

807

Yesterday was not a particularly good day for football.  The Edinburgh cup final was played before a half empty Hampden long before the end and Chelsea’s revival of catenaccio secured the Champions League.  If nothing else the latter proved that football at the very top level is not always great.  Perhaps the reason why truly great teams are so celebrated.

There is an interesting dynamic to Rangers in administration.  Creditors have a cash offer of around £8.5m to consider but eight players, Naismith, Bocanegra, McGregor, David, Whittaker, Goian, Lafferty and Edu cut release clause deals with Duff and Phelps for values greater than this.

Any CVA agreed next month (unlikely though it is) could be paid for by the departure of these players.  Charles Green could potentially be the second person to buy Rangers for only £1.

It is, however, unlikely that other clubs will offer money for these players before a CVA is agreed as they will be available as free agents should the CVA fail and those in control of Ibrox attempt to form a Newco.  Therefore, the chances of creditors getting their hands on any of these transfer fees are limited, no matter what happens to the company.

You can talk to my face if you want :))

Just saying that center half is a problem position for us

We have the player of the year in Charlie and a young norwegian who has been dropped and substituted in games And that’s it

If you think that’s ok then than fine with me

It does not sit fine with a lot of others though

Would I be right in thinking that you are desperate to believe the myth about why the name Celtic was chosen because it supports your own outlook?

  3. Hearts had a remarkable series of decisions going for them during their cup run. Against St Johnstone; a soft ordering off for St Johnstone in the first game and in the replay Hearts got a very debatable penalty in the last minute.

In the semi final Ian Black was lucky to stay on the field and the penalty was a surprise decision. The same things happened in the final.

    Remarkable. :-)

I’d say Rogne and Mulgrew would be first choices all other things being equal but others such as Wanyama, Loovens and even Wilson can come in and do a job.

Aye, Declan doing well, keeping us up loads so in work for a bit of a rest. :-)

Mrs Mort doing well too. Still a bit tired after it all but coping with everything wonderfully. Couldn’t be prouder of the pair of them.

    ………………..

OK you two, both of you provide the facts to back up your theories and we’ll all judge them on the evidence provided.

  7. Ernie you are such a cynic and very presumptuous.

I take a lot of things as articles of faith, I take a lot of things as gospel of the sciences and that which I am told which I can neither prove nor disprove I neither believe nor disbelieve, whichever and neither, however, I don’t resort to cynicism as a default.

I am told a lot of things that I know and can prove are bull but I rather enjoy the hilarity of the myth. I would not ever dare say that the Scots were not called Celts.

You made a statement of fact that you cannot prove. You ridicule others for doing likewise. There is a word for that.

  8. Mort belated congrats to you and Mrs Mort. In the words of the song “Its only just begun” Hail Hail Hebcelt

That’s the wrong approach though isn’t it?

It’s for those suggesting a reason why the name Celtic was chosen to provide satisfactory evidence.

You don’t just accept a claim until it’s been disproved.

Where’s the evidence to support the view that the name Celtic was chosen because it was some kind of link between Scotland and Ireland?

The origins of terms like ‘hillbilly’ and ‘redneck’ are almost certainly complicated and obscured by the passing of time.

…it won’t stop people whio enjoy an ole argument arguing about them, but there is no right and dfeinitive answer, as is the case with the origins of many folk expressions.

Mixed memories (emotions) today. Wonderful to be in Seville 9 years ago today (how hot was it!), but my beloved gran passed away 9 years ago today also.

Yup couldn’t believe the searing heat. Remember sitting in the stadium just before kick off and sweat pouring off me wondering how on earth people could run around in the heat, our guys did us proud.

Stayed at Occidental hotel near train station, George McCluskey and Patrick Kielty (Irish comedian allegedly) also there.

Went back to uk via Madrid and have an everlasting memory of us sitting at our restaurant on the Thursday night in Plaza Mayor with ‘pockets’ of Celtic fans in various corners of the square striking up a wee sing song whilst sipping some soothing Merlot. Heaven on earth.

  12. Sydney, what exactly has the defence done wrong this season?

Do you want a defence that concedes 0 goals all season, that would be good but impossible.

Or alternatively name a few CBs that you would like.

I dig on a regular basis in small town Sicilian flea markets . Rarely find anything I want personally but the relevant sellers don’t seem to have twigged that early Italo House tunes sell for big bucks in NYC / Chicago / Manchester etc. Sometimes I feel guilty. The guilt tends to disappear when I use the profit to buy tunes from vinyl sellers in the States.

Have never been into the Bee Gees but have to thank them for Massachusetts and the album it was on,apparently Oasis, whilst touring America before the release of Definitely Maybe picked up a Bee Gees cassette to listen to at a truck stop which they listened to a lot on the tour bus and influenced the production of their debut album,so as told by Owen Morris the producer of said album on the ole ten year celebration dvd.

you should re-read that post and then read what you wrote earlier about the Scots not being known as Celts… you made that statement not another, so by your own words the onus of proof is on you. Am I correct?

By the way mate, I never offered an opinion on how Celtic were named. Ever.

Madrid was where my hotel was too. On the night of the game l with my son tried to sleep in the railway station but they closed it. So like tens of other Celtic fans we slept on the pavement outside .

The journey back on the train was one big sing-song unforgettable.

You should at least be alert to the fact that you are more likely to accept at face values those claims which reinforce your own prejudicies.

In my experience those are the things you should be most sceptical about.

Regarding science etc and accepting things we don’t know enough about to understand always remember that scientists talk about ‘the truth for now’ ie something that is currently accepted as fact and believed to be correct may subsequently be shown to be wrong.
