Protecting your keeper and defence

772

If we are looking for reasons why Celtic have dropped so many points in recent weeks it is revealing that we have not kept a clean sheet away in the league since Boxing Day, and that was to bottom club Dundee.

Losing goals, of course, is seldom about the last line of defence, and losing goals this consistently is seldom even an issue with defence, in dominant teams, defenders are seldom taxed.  It is more likely a consequence of the shape of the team.  Goalkeepers should be protected, as should defences.

It’s the midfield we should be looking at.  Dominate possession and stop leaving spaces for the opposition to exploit; we’ll stop losing goals and start winning games.

  1. A friend of mine in Ireland is watching the game, Linfield 1-3 Shamrock Rovers.

He said there were quite a few fans made the trip.

    Bussed in and out.

    Hasn’t mentioned trouble.

He said they were matching the Linfield fans song for song though!!

That is over three years since the Masterplan was published and not much has happened at the Park in between. I notice that in the 2009 doc. “we welcome the retention of the listed London Road School, and proposed re-use as a museum….” a position no longer held. Three years of further decay has sealed its fate. Let us face it this is Glasgow, if a building has to go, it goes. I do believe the Celtic side will be complete, not sure about across the road.

Billy’s place on Torrisdale Street (adjacent to the station) changed hands some time back (not sure if his son had it for awhile). The other Irish bar on Vicky Road was boarded up after the New Year – not sure if its open or not (scarey place these days after dark).

I meant no disrespect, I simply thought you seemed to passionate a supporter to let someone else stop you from doing what you love doing, ie supporting Celtic.

Maybe its time to stop, as I clearly upset you. Sorry for that.

I hope we both get what we want. As that would be both good for the game and good for Celtic.

I don’t know you, and sorry for sounding like I did. I just think a lot of supporters say they will stop doing this and that, but by simply being here and talking about stopping injustice, I think they will continue to fight the good fight, even when things don’t go our way.

  15. Gerry McNee saw no future for him in Scotland as a sports journalist if he was seen to support us. So, he tried to rise above it by claiming to support Man Und and overcriticised us at every turn, just like Keevins, Walker and Provan do today. There is no future in even giving us an even break in the Scottish media. They have decided to it is in their financial interest to fawn on thon deid team and do their damnedest to vilify us. Ignore them.

Just read Kenny Clark’s opinion on the Grifiiths’ free kick goal that wasn’t awarded yesterday.

What he says, paraphrasing, is that the Linesman’s position is in line with the 2nd last defender to adjudge any offside players, as it ought to be, while the Referee is watching play from in front of the wall, as provided for in the current guidance/ recommended best practice.

In this case, the wall was around 30 yards from goal, the referee 35 yards out, and the linesman watching the offside line along the 18 yard line.

What he fails to mention is…

…this was a direct free kick, likely to be struck directly at the target, and between them, neither the referee nor the linesman thought it would be a good idea to get a decent view of the goal. Just in case, like…

As it turns out, the referee’s position precluded a view of the goal, while the linesman apparently is expected to be able to run from his position on the 18 yard line adjudging offside, to the goal line in time to adjudge whether the ball has crossed the line.

Necessarily, this requires the linesman to get to the touchline “as quickly as possible…”, which means running faster than the football is travelling, which of course is moving at a speed in excess of 60mph.

Until the referees’ shackle is broken such that officials and former officials feel able to talk openly and honestly about the role and the challenges it presents, we’ll continue to endure this belief-defying, incongruous and really rather embarrassing parochial sub-mediocrity.

It doesn’t need to be this way, but the reality is perpetuated by such self-serving attitudes as these that would shame a 1970s Jobsworth.

Good point, the atmosphere at Anfield did seem exceptional, maybe enhanced to make it seem better than the cup tie at Old Trafford. The only time we get additional mikes is when there is a minutes silence in November at Brockville or places like that.
