Protecting your keeper and defence

772

If we are looking for reasons why Celtic have dropped so many points in recent weeks it is revealing that we have not kept a clean sheet away in the league since Boxing Day, and that was to bottom club Dundee.

Losing goals, of course, is seldom about the last line of defence, and losing goals this consistently is seldom even an issue with defence, in dominant teams, defenders are seldom taxed.  It is more likely a consequence of the shape of the team.  Goalkeepers should be protected, as should defences.

It’s the midfield we should be looking at.  Dominate possession and stop leaving spaces for the opposition to exploit; we’ll stop losing goals and start winning games.

  1. Our recent away malaise is more to do with poorly implemented playing systems than individual mistakes.

When Hooper gave the ball away at Juventus it was poor on his part but where was the midfield cover? We should have had a midfielder between forward and defense.

On the Munro goal at weekend Wilson’s clearance was poor but there should have been midfielders in that area to challenge.

All our players held the same line acroos the field allowing them huge zone to attack.

To often no matter what system we are playing our midfield seems to be wrong side of ball.

To often the gap between midfielders and attack is huge leaving forwards outmanned.

When opponents break we then seem to leave huge spaces to run at our centre backs.

Our opponents always seem to be playing on a bigger pitch than us.

We lack cohesiveness and this has to be down to coaching.

Their inexperience is showing on a consistent basis and this should be addressed.

  4. The MSM are pushing for Sevco to be in the SPL because if they’re not they’ll end up in admin.

Every fan should get signed up on twitter or goto their website @splfansunited and give you’re input for the future of our game.

Instead of focusing on Sevco let’s all focus our energy on getting rid of the corrupt blazers for good and sign up for @splfansunited.

  5. Don’t know why everyone is getting on at CM. Is he not allowed an opinion? Or its because it is different than your own?

I think he was quite clear, it was more exciting with Rangers in the league, that alone doesn’t mean they should be allowed back in. Whats to argue with?

It was more exciting with Rangers in the league, but I am not missing them. The cheating continues wether they are in the league or not it seems anyway, with the corrupt SFA. This just makes cheating that bit harder for them.

I would prefer to have Rangers back, (once they have gained promotion properly), but have the corrupt ruling body removed and replaced with an impartial one. Than continue with the current SFA, and have Rangers back at somepoint anyway, no doubt before they are due.

CM has no say on the matter, his opinion is his own, and no matter how the msm spin it, his opinion doesn’t affect if Rangers get back in tomorrow or 5 years from now. So why all the knickers in a twist? More ‘Old Firm’ games, (as they will most certainly still be called by most,) would attract more players, yes I do miss them, I certainly don’t miss that horrible feeling of getting cheated in them though!

Under the current system, they will come back, and they will cheat us again. Isn’t it better to work towards accepting them back, in due course, but making sure there is no more cheating. Just to be clear, if we can’t disband the SFA and start over, yes, I would prefer to move to the EPL, or even one of the leagues below. There would be far more exciting games, and they would surely be fairer.

Agree 100%. The SFA/SPL will make sure Rangers do come back, there is no stopping it. So lets remove the corruption, that is the only way forward.

500 days until the opening ceremony for the Commonwealth, and not a lot of time to build whatever is going to be built before then. Celtic have applied for planning permission to demolish the school (no laughing at the back), build a museum and create a public space leading up to Celtic Park itself. Without checking the docs. not sure if that carries through to the Tavern, hopefully it does. On the other side of London Road everything seems to be still up for grabs, with development signs all along. They need signature buildings at key positions, street corners usually, opposite the Tavern and also on both sides of London Road towards the centre. They are building a new Police HQ on the river at Dalmarnock so it is possible the London Road “office” could be demolished but not sure. Main point being, a whole lot of work to be done in a short time before the games.

Love the site Paul but I think you are way off the mark here.

Perhaps if we had instinctive defenders who’ve plied their trade since the age of 10 playing at centre back instead of converted midfielders filling the role we would ship fewer goals.

Perhaps if our defenders were encouraged to be aggressive instead of trying to be good boys who pick up opponents we would ship fewer goals.

Perhaps if Mulgrew worked harder at his defensive craft instead of running around wearing a red nose we would ship fewer goals.

Perhaps if we had a coach who could teach a back four about positioning, holding the line, using the off side trap and not doing a McManus style retreat towards the goal every time an opponent picks up possession in our half we would ship fewer goals.

Thing is, no matter how they come back, and they will, people will still call it an ‘Old Firm’ game. I would rather go into that game, knowing its a fair game, run by a fair official, than go into it complaining that they are not Rangers, talking of boycott’s and probably getting beat due to some dodgy officials, and no avenue for complaint.

While I do agree with that, someone seems to be playing in the the 3rd division under that name? That team appears able to win the league and if they keep winning leagues will play in the SPL? I would like to see them seen as a different team, and I will always consider the ‘old rangers’ dead, and this a new rangers. What I want more than anything though, is a stop to the cheating and preferential treatment. We will never get this matter 100% our own way, its not going to happen. Whats most important for you? The cheating stopped and a level playing field, or making sure that the msn and everyone else says its no longer the ‘Old Firm’, which lets be honest, isn’t going to happen anyway.

  20. Lennondhino18

Yes, I have seen the plans, in fact someone posted a link on here. They are very detailed, but involve persuading Glasgow Planning to give permission to knock the school down, and create space for the new museum. The museum itself is of a “modern” design, or in other words, easy to build, not everybody’s cup of tea, but space wise quite impressive. We know that much, but it is still not clear who or what will occupy the space the other side of the London Road. Perhaps someone could load up a link.

As an entity, they died. Certainly there is another club with the same name who have managed to attract the same bigotted, vengeful, racist/sectarian pea brains who followed deidco. Being as antisocial as the previous entity shouldn’t entitle the newco to any special privileges.

Unlike the deidco ALL clubs should be required to follow all the rules all the time. And ALL clubs should be treated similarly if they are found guilty of not following the rules.

  22. Lennondhino18

Thanks for that. Point I was making is there is a lot of work to do before the Commonwealth Games, but the Celtic Park side is do-able. I have not seen any plans beyond that.

Maybe I couldn’t get my point across clear enough, for that I am sorry. But I agree 100% with what you said above. I feel exactly the same way. But I don’t see it happening. And sitting here saying ‘they are not Rangers’ doesn’t look like its going to achieve anything. So maybe we go after the cause of the problem? The SFA, for footballing matters, and other bodies for the law breaking element in their support. Because for me, just saying, ‘Their not Rangers, we shouldn’t play them’, isn’t changing anything that we didn’t like before?
