Questions are always the same, just the answers change

Is the club safe with Sir David, Dave King and Paul Murray?  Is Craig Whyte a worthy successor?  Is Charles Green trustworthy?  Is Ally McCoist a great manager?  For the PR hired hands at Ibrox, the questions were always the same, it was just the answers that changed.

Few have the gall to deliver the PR messages which flow out of Ibrox, and that group of clubs have depended on PR spin for decades.  Short of the communication of formal issues, like Annual Accounts and sensitive Stock Market issues, Celtic don’t utilise external PR services.

Celtic have in-house PR to facilitate media inquiries and the output of club message, but there’s no perceived need to bring in an external spin doctor to reframe reality.  This is the way it should be, of course, you’ll never win a battle in the gutter with a guttersnipe, but there are costs.

We have had paid professionals successfully briefing against our club for decades, millions of people read and listen to these messages daily.  This is a battle we will never win but the consequences for a football club trying to go about their business in an orderly manner are significant. The club, its directors, manager, players and supporters are variously painted as money-obsessed, anger-filled, flops and a rabble who hate the country their forefathers fought for.

We don’t indulge in PR excesses because Celtic have nothing to spin. They pay the taxes required to support their nation’s services, run an orderly business and are a remarkably well-respected and successful collection of fans, players, coaches and administrators. There are always unpopular decisions but the club face them down.

An eagle-eyed reader noticed an interesting aggregation in the two schools in Malawi we are assisting. Saturday’s article noted the pupil numbers at Kholoni Primary School in Mchinji as 1221 and St Josephs’ Primary School in Kasungu as 746. Go on, add the figures and see how many pupils will benefit from Celtic fans building kitchens. The spirit of ’67 is alive and kicking.

If you are driving to, or being driven to, CQteN on Friday, don’t think you can just nip along London Road and into Celtic Park. There is no access to the stadium from London Road. Access is via Janefield St, which, if you are coming from the east, means driving underneath the stadium. Make sure your taxi driver is aware.

There was a tremendous response to the whisky auction, which closes on Friday at noon, the current highest bid stands at £225. We have bottle No. 1 of a limited edition (291 in total) Craigallachie Telford’s Bridge, in a wooden box and presentation cardboard tube, whit an authentication certificate.

Bids are by email only to auction@celticquicknews.co.uk. This is a rare and valuable bottle. Shipping within UK and Ireland is included. Please include contact details and your bid amount.

Many thanks for all the kind wishes to the family yesterday, they were enormously appreciated.

Seville, The Celtic Movement, launches on Friday! Copies have landed and I hear…. it’s pretty decent.

“We are in the Estadio Do Besso on the 24th April 2003. We are far into the 78th minute of the 2nd leg of a UEFA Cup Semi-Final. The first leg in Glasgow, a fortnight earlier had seen Celtic obtain a 1:1 draw with Boavista, a relative minnow in Portuguese terms who had won their first ever top league title in season 2000/01, having only been 2nd on 2 previous occasions in their history.”

  1. ABZMike,

………..VERY staunch Sheepy bar, the Masada. They used to run (from memory) something like seven fitba teams (from Junior to Welfare League), one Rugby club and two cricket teams out of there.

Is Tommy Quirrie (the one armed barman) still serving there?

  2. Marrakesh Express on

Spoke to a Dons fan in work earlier. He tells me many sheep are heading to Glasgow on Saturday morning, some even Friday night. So with thems playing at Ibigot and the city centre swarming with sheepies, could be interesting.

  3. Margaret McGill on

When I think of the wonderful ecstatic superlative football on offer in the EPL La Liga Bundesliga and Serie A for the last 20 years, the bottom 15 teams in each could have been Dumbarton. No offence to Dumbarton.

  4. Rioskorrie – a while since I’ve been in. I know a guy that does go their though (mainly to get the free bus to Pittodrie on match days – all of 15mins walk!) so will ask him.

  5. ABZMike and Rioskorrie,

Cheers for the responses. I wasn’t looking for a place to watch any games or tele, looking for a lively St Paddy’s night if there’s one happening up there.

  6. huskerpunk – OK, thinking about it I was in the Globe Inn (North Silver Street) on Saturday evening, and they various Paddy’s day paraphernalia hanging about, decent place, often have bands so could be worth a look as well.

  7. Huns don’t get the concept of neutral venue for the semi-final do they.

‘We should give them the club deck’

‘We should put them in the corner’

‘Give them the least tickets we’re allowed to’

Let’s hope the rovers sort them out so there’s no misunderstanding about neutral venues, HH

  8. LIBERTADORES RND 3 (WEDS NIGHT PREVIEW)

Well here it is, my spin on tonight’s Libertadores matches.

Remember for those of you chosing to punt on these matches, the value of ‘skorrie tips can (and do) often go really Pete Tong.

Independiente de Valle (Equ) v Botafogo (Bra)

Independiente, currently joint leaders of the Ecuadorian league, had a 0-0 draw with LDU at the weekend. This prompted their manager, Repetto to go on a long diatribe about how his team were “unlucky” and would “turn” soon. They have also said that ‘fogo’s nippy wee forward, Wallyson, will be “closely marked” in tonights game. I shudder to think what that means in reality.

Faced with the challenge of playing at altitude, Botafogo have taken the fly-in/play ASAP route on this one and have been based at sea level, Guayguil prior to flying in tonight for this one. ‘fogo are now out of the Carioca state championships and with a fully fit squad, should be fully focussed on this. However, wage payment arrears may be weighing in the minds of some players.

Inde’s ground at reminds me of Clachnacuddin’s Grant Street Park – only smaller.

    AWAY WIN (55% certain)

San Lozenzo (Arg) v Union Espanola (Chi)

The “Pope’s Eleven”, San Lorenzo rested a few players at the weekend in their one all draw with Gody and the main surprise here is that striker Blandi who scored on Saturday, is benched in favour of Correa (who look’s like another one to watch) and Matos up front.

Union Espanola had a hard fought 3-2 home win in their domestic game, with striker Gustavo Canales being their key man. However, having watched a wee bit of their previous games, I don’t think they have what it takes to beat San Lorenzo at home.

    HOME WIN (75% certain)

    Flamengo v Bolivar

Flamengo are playing well as a team unit at this praticular time and will be looking to home advantage in the Maracanã to breeze past Bolivar in this one. ‘mengo will be looking in aparticular at midfield pivot, Carceres to pull the strings and striker Hernane (the Drill) who will now stay with them (before taking up a mega bucks deal in China) as long as they remain in the Libertadores for goals here.

That, and the fact that Bolivar under new managership this week, have conceded 19 goals for no reply in their past three matches against Brasilian opponents. In fact if you want to get statistical on this in 48 Brasil v Bolivia previous outings in the Libertadores, Bolivian teams have won only once (drawing three times)

    HOME WIN (95% certain)

    Nacional (Par) v Atl Mineiro(Bra)

The Paraguayan Nacional (not to be confused with the Columbian and Uruguyan counterparts) had a solid 1-0 win over C.Porteno at the weekend, but lost influential stiker Benitez and midfielder, Melgarejo in the process. In a cynical move to draw a large Brasilian crowd to this, Nacional have moved this game from hometwon Ascension to border town Cuidad del Este which is a 10minutes walk from Brasil.

Holders, Mineiro underlined that they’re taking the Libertadores serious again this season, by only fielding a reserve squad at the weekend (when they qualified for the next stage of the Miniero State Championship). Looks like the Galo will field a pretty much unchanged line-up for this one, with the exception of young striker, Marlon who may get a run out during the game.

    AWAY WIN (60% certain)

Zamora (Ven) v Santa Fe (Col)

Zamora have yet to score in this competition and will be relying heavily on midfielder Pedro “the Wizard” Ramirez to pull something out of the hat for them in this game. However, as a unit, they are struggling at this level.

Santa Fe played well in their 2-1 defeat at Atletico Mineiro in their last outing (where they played approx an hour with ten men) and will be looking to get something from this game. However, they will be without experienced defenders Otalarvo, Mosquera and striker Wilder Medina. Medina was neither funky or cool (pun intended) in his performance against A.Mineiro and was red carded.

    AWAY WIN (60% certain)

    Boa Sorte!!!

  9. Looking at South Of Tunis posts about Milan should remind us all of a chance lost.Along with Ajax, they were very ordinary. Our bungling in the transfer window really hamstrung our chance to qualify. It really is a “What could have been”.Hopefully we are set for this attempt.I cant see any outfield players going, and maybe we will see another quality signing. We must never get into the same position again. Not the failing to finish second, but the failure to plan for it properly.

Wee James is really becoming a waste of space. As soon as he hits any form, out again.Time to cash in,if possible.

The good news is that these failures frees up time to visit Awe Naw, makes life a little easier and saves lots of you some cash.

    Guys,

The old laptop looks to have died and gone to heaven after a period of time in which it provided a sterling service and in return was regularly abused, beaten, thrown around, dropped, sworn at and neglected.

There ate various items I need to retrieve from it before it is buried with its numerous knackered predecessors which may prove challenging.

However, I noticed on here the other day that some folk were discussing laptop purchases and stupidly I did not take note of the conclusions reached.

Accordingly, can some kind soul please repeat the nuance of the advice given and the cumulative conclusions reached?

Or am I as we’ll heading off to PC World and ordering up a new machine to overwork and batter about for a couple of years before killing it as well with the same level of love and care — anything else seems to be beyond me to be honest!

    Cheers

  14. Sannabhoy – I make that apart from my ‘?’, there was no post for 35 minutes.

I reckon that’s a record for prime time.
