Raith Rovers Revenge

259

It’s less than four days since the SFA, SPL and SFL chief executives met at Hampden to devise a plan to destroy and rebuild Scottish football within three weeks, coincidentally, allowing a Newco access to the second tier of the Scottish league pyramid.

Just as the SPL clubs rejected Neil Doncaster’s strong advocacy that they co-opt Newco directly into the top tier, Scottish Football League clubs are already showing an unwillingness to be boxed into a corner.

Before today’s meeting of the SFL board Raith Rovers have already pinned their colours to the mast, “the board of directors of Raith Rovers FC is unanimous in its view that we shall certainly not cast our vote in favour of any integrated plan that in our view compromises sporting integrity by involving the admission of any ‘Newco’ directly into Division One”.

Earlier this year Raith were caused considerable cost and inconvenience after Rangers manager, Ally McCoist, publicly demanded to know the identities of the SFA Judicial Panel who penalised the club for not paying social taxes.  Rangers already knew that a Rovers director was on the panel.

True to an extent but the Champions League qualifier is coming and we need to know. It’s make up his mind time. He did the same dithering last summer. Not acceptable.

The players haven’t even reported back for training yet. I too hope he makes up his mind quickly and that he signs for Celtic as he has had two fantastic seasons for us, breaking records.

Why should he be rushed into a decision, if we were really keen a deal could have done unless off course he is looking for silly money.

  3. Fraser Forster stalling?

A certain scotland international keeper, proven in the SPL and currently without a footbal club may come available for free soon…..

Philbhoy – No player, even if he’s 6′ 8″ tall, is bigger than the club.

What if the player was the Jolly Green Giant, or Shub-Niggurath, The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young, or Unicron?

You can’t just go around making ridiculous generalisations like that. (thumbsup)

There’s nothing like jumping the gun is there based on some reports from newspapers.

Fraser Forster has every right to seek out the best deal for him and his family, just like Artur Boruc did in 2010 when he rejected the offer of a new contract so that he could go and join Fiorentina.

    ===

FF has had ample time to make up his mind – a whole season in fact. His dithering, hoping for an EPL club to come along, when we to fill the number 1 spot is not acceptable. If he signs it should be because he wants to play for Celtic not because we were the only decent option.

The situation with Artur was different at no time did THG keep Celtic waiting he told them he wanted to leave and as we all know he needed to go at that time.

I reiterate Celtic need to know who will be in the squad we have CL qualifiers coming in the very near future. If any of the squad wish to leave let them –take the money and reinvest.

If he decides to go elsewhere, good luck to him.

Who cares if he’s hoping for other offers? If the club could secure a better keeper, I’d expect them to jump at the chance.

It’s very difficult to speculate without knowing the facts. Do we know if he was ever offered a concrete deal? If so, do we know what it was worth?

For all any of us know, he might have made up his mind and is waiting on Celtic making up our mind.

We just don’t know and speculation does nothing to help.

If he doesn’t sign permanently for us, he will leave with my thanks as his performances in the past two years have improved immeasurably and his record with Celtic is comparable with any Celtic goalkeeper of the past.

So Mk II rangers look like going the way of Mk I rangers.

sad really, because the next course of action will be for someone – probably Walter Smiths coven – to buy a lower division club and rebrand as Mk III rangers.

Sad because it’ll mean the death of a smaller club, with lifleong fans, a proud history, and probably undeserving of this fate.

it’s not like me to ‘hate’ but the feelings I have towards these people are as close as I come to that particular emotion.

I agree that we still have a wee bit of time, but it is disconcerting when players play the “anyone in the premiership want me as i’d really rather go there”. FF must know that Lenny rates him and i’d reckon that by in large the vast majority of fans want him to sign. But if he’s gonna drag his heels then, not for me.

In defence of the big man, we don’t know what’s being said to him “Daon Sauth”. Ze English totally piss on oor game, and given the state of affairs that the game is in maybe he is being poorly advised. I still think he HAS to commit either way asap.

Hi – can anyone explain/justify Celtic’s silence on this matter?

I can’t explain it as I have no idea about the inner workings at Celtic but I sure as heck can justify it.

Celtic have said from before Rangers went into administration that we don’t need them for us to survive and thrive. Everybody knows we will vote NO TO NEWCO. We don’t have to say anything and in fact, a much more powerful message is being sent out with other clubs taking the lead on this.

If Celtic had came out to vote NO, we would have been lambasted by all in media and would have been accused of trying to bully other teams into making this decision.

Celtic have played this very smart and our silence is only annoying them all. See Keevins disgraceful piece this morning trying to get Celtic fans to put pressure on Celtic to speak out. They all wish we had spoken first as we could be protrayed as the bad guys wanting rid of Rangers for selfish reasons.

As it stands, Scottish Football has spoken and has resoundly spoken against cheating.

  24. Interesting article from FourFourTwo. First hun to hold his hands up and admit their club is in the wrong.

As each SPL member club in turn listens to its fans and decides to vote against allowing a ‘newco’ Rangers into the league, the fact the issue was even up for debate demonstrates all that’s wrong with football in Scotland.

The SPL have, for a long time, been accused of being a law unto themselves and have often bent rules to suit those chairmen out for short-term financial gain at the expense of long-term investment and growth.

This time, fan power was the winner, with supporters talking of boycotting if the ‘new’ Rangers are allowed back into the top flight without question.

But why was the issue even up for debate in the first place when in any other country or league, a club that’s gone out of business have to start at the very beginning? Only in Scotland would there be the chance of shooing the ‘newco’ in.

As St Johnstone and Aberdeen publicly announced they wouldn’t support a ‘newco’ in the SPL, joining Hibernian, Hearts, Inverness and Dundee United – no Celtic, you’ll note, who have been rather quiet in the whole issue – it pretty much ended the fallen giants’ hopes of a Dallas-style comeback, in which the last 18 months would be nothing but a nasty dream.

The money that Rangers bring in, from their hefty support to their status as one of the Old Firm, attracts some serious TV money. From a short-term viewpoint, you can see why clubs would be reluctant to see them go.

Far be it for me to tell anyone how to run a business, but is it not a little risky to put all your eggs in the Old Firm basket, given other clubs’ warning of possible administration for themselves?

Let’s not forget that when there was plenty of talk of Rangers and Celtic joining the English Premier League, those other clubs said little about impending financial doom, instead salivating at the thought of a more competitive SPL.

As for Rangers, it leaves them in limbo with Third Division football a real possibility as their SPL peers ram metaphorical stakes through their hearts with every statement.

It leaves new owner Charles Green with a huge problem, especially as players such as Scotland internationals Steven Naismith and Steven Whittaker have left the club, not happy that their contracts were transferred over to the ‘newco’ apparently without proper consultation.

Many feel a new Rangers is not the Rangers they’ve spent their lives supporting, but would get behind a new team, such is the emotional detachment. As someone who has spent almost 35 years following the Gers, this correspondent doesn’t see it the same way.

The Rangers I supported have won 54 titles, competed in four European finals, won countless Scottish Cups and League Cups and be one of the continent’s most successful club sides in terms of silverware.

This new outfit starts with nothing. Zero titles, zero European nights, zero trophies. The only link will be the shirt colours, the fact the club plays at Ibrox and Ally McCoist, who should be manager, barring a major change of heart.

Plus there’s the intentions of Charles Green, who has inherited a mess, which is fast becoming a major nightmare. Rangers fans hoping he would be the man to lift the Ibrox club from its depression were soon warned by fans of Sheffield United, where he was reviled in the 1990s.

The worry is that Green is a wheeler-dealer trying to squirm the club into a place they’ve no place being, with big soundbites and little to show for it. Right now, as much as Ibrox fans might not like the comparison to the man who turned Celtic from near-bankrupts to financially sound champions, Rangers need a Fergus McCann. They don’t need an Arthur Daley.

But, as a fan, what astounds me more than anything is the complete lack of humility from anyone associated with the club throughout this whole episode, from Sir David Murray and Craig Whyte onwards, as they continue to pass the buck. Not one of them has actually held his hands up and accepted responsibility for the mess.

Meanwhile others are happy to play the victim card, claiming that the club are the subject of an agenda from not only the Scottish footballing authorities, but Her Majesty’s Government itself.

The bottom line is: you break the rules, you deserved to be punished. Fans happy to peddle the line that it was all that dastardly Craig Whyte’s fault, as he sits in his Highland castle laughing at the supporters he’s swindled, need to realise the current mess is not simply one man’s fault.

Finger-pointing has to stop and realise the SPL (and, for all their faults, their members) are actually doing the right thing. This could be a watershed for Scottish football as a whole to get its house in order – not only for Rangers, who should be a little more humble and embarrassed.

Perversely it could be the best thing to happen to Scottish football. Others however just refuse to see the bigger picture that way.
