  1. I thought at the time that Broonie was a really needless booking but in hindsight I actually believe he took the card to wake the rest of the team up, and let the Huns know we weren’t going to roll over, watch his reaction after it and from that point on we never really looked back

  2. Bit of a slow start by the Champions, but that was only to be expected as they played their NINTH game in 28 days. Has a top flight team in ANY country ever won 24 points in a single calendar month? Celtic’s 8 league wins in December must be a world record, surely. And in spite of the powers that be contriving to push our players to exhaustion this month, only the mighty multi-millionaires of Manchester City could take anything off the Bhoys.

Looking forward now into a bright new year, 5 of Celtic’s next 6 league games are at home, whilst the current runners-up face 4 out of their next 6 away from home. And with the Celtic players coming back from a three week break, fully refreshed and raring to go again, I expect them to resume their relentless drive towards 6 in a row.

The fixtures involving the top three up to February 1st are as follows, with my predicted outcomes in brackets):

25 Jan Celtic v St Johnstone (home win)

27 Jan Aberdeen v Dundee (home win)

28 Jan Motherwell v Rangers (draw)

29 Jan Celtic v Hearts (home win)

1 Feb Celtic v Aberdeen (home win)

1 Feb Hearts v Rangers (draw)

Should my predictions be correct, the top of the table will look like this on the evening of February 1st, with Celtic 24 points clear at the top:

Celtic 67 points (from 23 games)

    Rangers 41 from 23

    Aberdeen 40 from 22

  3. Be interesting to see the spin put on this by the Rags. I suspect there’ll be a lot of chat about the gap closing, about fine margins, about pride coming back…

They need to keep the chin up otherwise the fans will desert.

The reality is: we played our 10th game in a month. We were without 2 of our best players in Tierney and Rogic. One of their season-ticket holders was the ref. We put in our worst defensive display since Barca at the Nou Camp. We gave them a goal of a head start…

… And we still won. And could have won by more.

  4. For such a young lad – very mature performance by Dembele. There’s a Drogba/Costa type player there in the making.

Armstrong superb – Sinclair class (as was wee Paddy’s reverse pass).

Very unsettled opening but once we got into it – we pretty much dominated the 2nd half apart from a few occasions where we seemed to leave too much space in centre-mid.

9 games in December and a very professional finish to 2016 – well done the Bhoys and Brendan!

  5. To be fair, Kenny Miller did set a record that can never be equalled – only man to score for Celtic, Rangers and The Rangers in a Glasgow derby.

  6. onenightinlisbon on

Over on “Follow Follow” a lot of them talking about the gap and that this is one they won’t be able to bridge. Maybe some are starting to realise what lies ahead. Most however will see the result as progress and if only Kenny’s sclaff had gone in…

  7. Margins and gaps will be the talk aye.

Sinclair and Moussa are immense. Armstrong as well.

9 games in 28 days. OOft.

  8. I watched Boyce on Wed night at Paradise and think the boy has something just as he scores again today. Not saying he is better than anything we have but think he is solid.

Brendan sounds tired or has the cold after the match.

  9. Said it when he signed and many times since, Stuart Armstrong is a real player. Terrific again today. Hail Hail to all Tims, these are pretty good times!

  10. Thought Moussa deserves special praise today. Couple of wise guys near me at CP moan constantly: “that boy’s never a 40 mullion pound fitballler. Get wee Leigh oan!”

Think he showed why he was chosen today. Bullied their defence all day long, scored a great goal, with a wee bit more composure could’ve had another.

In the second half he was unplayable.

    From Sevco Fansite

“That was infinitely better than the last two games against them and nothing to be ashamed of. A team with better players than us outplayed us for portions of the match but for the most part it was an even game.”

    Discuss…..

  12. Much mirth at the Ottawa CSC today. I am sure it was much the same wherever you are…..

    First things first:

    2-1

    19 points

    1 game in hand.

    There….:)

As for the details…fair play to Warburton. He had his team on the front foot from the off. Quite brave, going with a back 3, obviously gambling on his 5 dominating the middle. Which they did, for about 30 minutes. During which time they scored, won most of the 50-50’s and generally gave it a good go.

But there is no substitute for class. We have a real Big Game Player in Dembele. Not having done much in the game, he fair blasted the ball into the roof of the net. Just as well that one didn’t hit the roof of the stand…..

After that, we pretty well dominated. Sure, the home side had a wee spurt in the 2nd half, when they had a couple of breakaways, and hit our post.

But aside from that, we gave them a real doing. Had this been 5 0r 6-1, they could have no complaints.

I can’t remember how many times we hit their woodwork (3?)

Armstrong could have (should have) had a hat trick.

Sinclair could have had 3 as well.

And Dembele’s 2nd half performance was SO good, that I never once pleaded for Griffiths to get a run. Dembele was THAT good.

My abiding memory of the home team was Moussa spending ages shielding the ball at the corner flag. If Rangers were still alive, one of their player would have come over and booted him. But this team isn;t Rangers……

They do have one clever wee player, McKay. He gave Lustig a torrid time. Occasionally.

And the ref. Sevco supporting refs fall into 2 categories. The BIG CHEATING calls. Or the sneaky death of a thousand cuts. Craig Thompson falls into the first category. Madden falls into the other. Today he was joined by McLean. McLean’s appointment was akin to Aiden McGrady’s brother being the ref. Think about that for a minute…..

He got our bookings right, but let the home side away with very similar infringements. He gave them every wee thing and waved play on when it was the other way round.

There was one case in the first half, where a home player was fouled. He waved play on. They made a couple of passes. Took a shot that missed. Then he called play back to the original foul. ‘Nuff said.

Celtic’s 2nd half performance was so good that it would have taken 2 referees to stop us.

Fair play to Brendan. He showed once again, that he can read a game, make adjustments and turn things around.

And finally, my man of the match – STUART ARMSTRONG. Don’t tell Charlie….:)

Brown and Dembele were outstanding in the 2nd half, but Armstrong played a strong game throughout.

    Anyway, like I said….19 points…..:)

    Cheers,

    Ronnie

He was very good today, though you do wonder with Leigh you maybe don’t get all the hold up play but would he have maybe not put the game beyond the huns

‘I hope you die’: Old Firm shame as minute’s silence broken at Ibrox

A minute’s silence was observed at Ibrox for the 1971 disaster – but fans interrupted the tribute with insults.

    BYRECORD REPORTER

    13:22, 31 DEC 2016UPDATED14:06, 31 DEC 2016

Disruptive fans at Ibrox broke a minute’s silence before the Old Firm game this afternoon.

The silence was being held for the 66 Rangers fans who lost their lives in the Ibrox disaster of 1971.

A shout of “I hope you die” was heard ringing round the stadium just seconds before the minute silence was up. It is not known which side the shout came from.

Players from both sides were seen shaking their head in disappointment when the observation was disrupted.

The majority of fans held the silence, which came after Lisbon Lions legend Bertie Auld pleaded with Celtic supporters to observe the silence, saying: “Remember those who died and pay the people involved the respect they deserve.

“Something like the Ibrox disaster brings you down to earth and I am sure the fans will remember that.”

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers seconded this plea, saying: “The tragedy at Ibrox was one which affected Rangers FC and so many other people across Scotland.

It transcended football and also involved Celtic so closely.

“As we have done many times, we’ll pay respects and remember sincerely those who lost their lives in tragic circumstances.”

  15. Gave Sevco a thirty minute start then hunted them down. Not so much Mind The Gap as Mind The ………………….Chasm. Happy New Year to all from Canberra.

  16. Great result! Was getting mildly concerned after Sevco goal and broony booking.

On holiday up in aviemore for new year so away from most of the madness.

Stuck inside after spraining ankle before holidays so relying on dodgy stream which lasted about 10 minutes then onto shortbread, now onto snyde phone in. BR just come on.

Determined to get out tonight to see the squibs and party, even bought one of them walking pole thingys. Seen the goals thanks to the guys on here, cheers for that! Moussa’s different class.

Looks like our supporters have left the Victorian toilet safely, now just have to look out for falling Tellys!

Starting off with a punk IPA and co-cody cocktail. Have a good one tonight and stay safe.

  17. Noticed Sevco had no advertising on one of the main stands -just their badge.

Are firms no longer associating with them?

  18. Nice wee touch from Eric when Garner went down injured, picking up his false eyelashes for him and handing them to the physio!! :-)

Happy new year to you and your’s I hope 2017 all your dreams come true. I hope it is a successful year for you all and the best of health.

  20. Celtic are heading to Dubai for some warm weather training after a short break, where are Sevco heading?

  21. The Battered Bunnet on

I thought Celtic in the first half, first 30 minutes particularly, were as poor as we’ve been this season.

Sevco in that period played as well as they were collectively able, and the match was pretty even as a consequence.

The second half though the Celtic players (largely) sorted their heads out, and had 7 clear chances to score, taking only one. The result was in doubt only because our finishing was poor. We ought to have been out of sight by 75 minutes, and I can’t shift a lingering sense of under-achievement.

  22. The Huddle,

I know. I’m not knocking Leigh, whom I think is a terrific player. And yes, I’d agree, he is very quick and clinical.

But I think BR felt it was going to be a battle today and went with strength instead of the elfin skill of the Griff.

  23. Sorry, shot my bolt early there, mmmm

Anyway hope we all have a good day and my lhad returns to planet earth at some point.

Just watched Sutton tell Robbie Savage off as Savage was suggesting The Orcs could have got a draw. Savage is dressed like an over 40′ s Boyzone Tribute Band. He is now looking as foolish as he sounds.

  24. Happy and safe New Year to all at CQN, I don’t get to see many games so was a bit nervy the first 30 mins.

After that it was a bit of a stroll though the result doesn’t reflect that.

Well worth getting up at 6am for.

Going to treat myself to dinner in a nice restaurant tonight and will be sitting at the bar sipping a Charles

Krug Cab Sav at 7pm wishing my Scottish Friends and family a Happy New Year.

Thank you all for the updates and links to the goals this year.

I look forward to more of the same in 2017

If you are going out tonight be safe and stay out of trouble, don’t give the rags any excuses.

God Bless you all and …….HH

  25. I think Brendans ,no 1 priority is to get another good Centre Half, and a right back, Lustig, was taken to the cleaner’s,with McKay who in my opinion,is a very good player,

  26. Two things I noticed. When Paddy came on he, unusual for him, took just two or three touches then laid of sublime passes. It’s not what I expected but it worked wonderfully well and led to the second goal.

After Scott Sinclair scored that sublime goal, during the ensuing huddle with the subs, Scott Brown went forehead to forehead with the goalscorer. A captain doing a captains job I think. Reinforcing the managers message, infusing positivity into the players and bringing the bhoys together as a team!
