Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

On my jaunts to India last year and poland this year … the most frequent question I was asked was why in God’s name did your country not vote for independence from those w@nkers. …

  2. One of the main reasons I supported Celtic was because they were the underdogs. Right now Ronnie is a man under incredible pressure with the world against him. For that reason I will support our manager. Let’s get behind our manager and our team.

I said I’ve never voted SNP

    I didn’t say I voted no,

You know me better than that B

  4. Whether our manager is here next season or not (and I hope he is) we MUST support him and the team. The SMSM are doing their level best to destroy him (and so any chance of us winning the league). He must be under enormous pressure and we are the only ones who can help to ease that for him. Let’s do what we do best: support our team and our manager.

    I wasn’t accusing you of being a w@nker; )

  6. I’m sure Ronny has been briefed about the smsm.

I’m sure he doesn’t give a monkeys what they write, say, think.

Well I don’t buy newspapers, watch their tv programmes or visit their online sites, so how can I be influenced by anything these hun bastards spout?

I do know they are hurting sumthin’ awful though and I’m loving that!

  7. Let’s not kid ourselves we are now in a real fight for the league. Complacency is our enemy. The Dons are a poor side with a decent striker. We are likewise. It’s roll up your sleeves time dig in and grind out results. LG s last minute goal against PT may be more significant than we thought.

lubo of the lamp, Brother Walfrid would probably have welcomed the introduction of Gay marriage. We don’t give 2 hoots what your sexual orientation is here at Celtic, Walfrid set us up to welcome all, that includes Gays.

All the titles and trophies in the world being stripped will not bring back the money that was denied us. Us and other sides and not just Scottish.

That’s why IMHO opinion PL is part of a bigger plan tae ensuring we run Scottish fitba, fairly and squarely (nae pun intended) to the benefit of all clubs

So what you’re saying is forget about stripping titles from cheats because we’ll not get any money and big Peter will sort everything.

Oh dear, I don’t think I’ve read such rubbish in my 3 years on this blog, congratulations.

Your earlier post on the Celtic Queen, I think that Kathleen is my Mum’s cousin Jack’s wife? Jack used to run the bar at the KSC up the top of the Port, a Celtic man through and through.

G64 – Best comments of the day so far mo chara.

See where this is going – our manager is under attack, which I can understand when it’s Celtic supporters giving him flak – what is unacceptable though is the gutter press/SMSM launching a vindictive campaign against a Celtic manager for reasons unbeknown.

This automatically creates a mood of defiance from within the Celtic support, whom then start to back Ronny to the hilt.

Ronny Delia is our leader, and I wish him all the success in the world.

There should be support for any manager, I was a bit dissapointed in myself under Tony Mowbray but in life you learn and Mogga was shocking and like supersally he sat on his gardening leave, why in this day and age failure is rewarded I will never know !

As far as I am concerned the players are as much too fault, I have never been a lover of the Monaco one but hey-ho he is there so if Ronny (does) trust him we are all in this together

    Just back from the rugby.

I agree it is pathetic that football supporters are treated differently to the drunken wahoos I watched tonight.

I saw at least 6 falling over whilst trying to carry their cargo back to their seats midway through the game.

The constant procession of drunken clowns going up and down to the bar through the game drives you nuts.

The whinging English buffoons moaning that there are more bars nearer seats in twickets. Enough to turn me violent.

Whilst it might be good for my business personally I think the current access to bars at CP pre and post game probably is right. It should be the same for rugby IMO.

  16. 16 Roads Our manager is under attack from every direction and I see no one lending a hand. As much as I’ve been one of his biggest critics when our mhan is under attack ill defend him. Time to circle the Celtic wagons. HH

I watch a lot of Aberdeen.

I think they are more than just a poor team with a decent striker.

McGinn Hayes, Rooney, Pawlett, Jack Shinnie , McLean Logan Reynolds.. All slightly better than average players. They are technically behind our players but Id say they are bigger characters, bigger hearts.

We have a challenge to contend with… Let’s not underestimate them

    Father Morton ???

There was a Father Morton in St Augustines a few years back, yet again another great priest, the good far outweigh the tiny bad minority, like every walk of life

    Well said G64.

Ronny is here to stay anyway according to Peter Lawwell, barring a catastrophic defeat like what happened to BTM.

So we would all be as well supporting the manager whilst he is still at the club.

I wasn’t a great fan of WGS, however he was smart enough to get rid of most of the MON team, apart obviously from Lenny his trusted lieutenant.

    Taxi was exactly my thought.

His continued presence at Celtic bothers me. Not because I’m holier than though but we need smart disciplined guys in the hoops. He doesn’t sound like he’s taking his chance seriously enough. Major rewards require major sacrifices….

I get what you’re saying, do you think it is the correct decision to stick with the manager until the end of season.

I personally don’t think it is, I truly hope I’m wrong.

5 in a row sounds good. It’s easy to support when we are winning

But as the article states its how we react to adversity that truly defines who we are.
