Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

I think my mother in law has a picture with an English in Mick lees in 1956 with bobby Collins and the league cup.

  2. Paddymacoz: Thanks for your post last night. My son in Melbourne has never seen the flag I’m looking for, but I’ve seen it on a few occasions. He hopes to return home for good later this year and I’d love to have one to welcome him home.

The mighty Dubs won their second match of the league campaign tonight. Like rugby, home and away fans sit together at GAA matches.

  6. Now talking of road traffic offences, I am looking for advice.

My wife just got done today for entering the bus lane on Maryhill Road at the junction of Queen Margaret Drive/ Bilsland Drive at 22.42 on a Sunday night. The pics show her car in the lane opposite the garage which looks to me as being around 20 yards or so before you are allowed legitimately to enter the left hand lane to turn left down QM drive.

I assume from the charge that this is a 24 hour bus lane (God knows why) so do we have any grounds for appeal?

Apologies for the non-fitba posts but as penance I will not react to the SNP love-in posters from earlier.

  9. Just having a wee drink to celebrate the life of ma pal Stephen Jones, who we buried today.

Fellow Teuchter Stephen – who hailed from Broxburn breathed Celtic. I spent many a happy day in his company, watching the game and celebrating many a win…….great times.

He was married in October when he walked back up the aisle to the thundering sound of the Celtic song with all in attendance in loud accompaniment.

He went into hospital a few days later and sadly, did not make it through his illness.

He passed away on 30th January.

He leaves behind his widow of 3 months and a loving family who spoke both eloquently and lovingly of his time on this earth.

Hail Hail Jonesy – A great Celtic man – The world is a poorer place these days.

In my 45+ years I have never met a bad priest, am in a bit of a quandary my wee blade makes her reconciliation soon but I don’t believe in it ….. If the big man (or woman) exists surely they know my or any bodies sins, my own parents “fought” with me over this, not in a physical manner, but I am far too stubborn, I love my religion, I love my upbringing (no hatred) but I feel a fraud when this sacrament is bestowed on my daughter, although I will be the proudest dad on this or any other planet !

And you lot think Ronny has problems !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Teuchtar: Lovely tribute, may Stephen RIP.

Eddie: He’s finishing a Ph.D. He will submit it March/April and will qualify(hopefully) three months later. He doesn’t want to stay in Oz as it’s too far away from family and friends.
