Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

…cough..splutter..nearly choked there. TWO BAD GAMES?????

Where have you been all season?

At the games. We have not been great this season, we have regressed significantly from last season. I was meaning we were actually in good form prior to last two games, probably our best run of form (Utd, Accies, St J). I just can’t see where anyone can see us losing to EK.

I think we will win. But don’t tell anyone else this, keep it a secret: it is a win-win situation.

And there was me thinking it was because those that voted for it mostly spoke latin and no other great altruistic reason, the better you speak and understand latin the easier was is to claim to have the definitive understanding and maintain power.

The majority of nations and populations had never heard latin spoken had no idea about it, china, india, 90% of asia and africa, the americas.

Did the missionaries just turn up in theses countries and start preaching in latin , no they did not, they took their snobbery and refined it to a murderous crusade that caused more harm than good for Christianity. These so called Christians began the corruption of the message.

So I will suit myself thank you.

Might be worth checking out what liturgical means rather than thinking that it should be used as the universal lingua franca outside the Church.

I am well aware of the meaning, my point being whats the good of preaching in a dead language only an elite understand but you knew that right, an irrelevant language is taking irrelevance to a whole new level, how do you pray when you don’t know what you are saying ffs,

I’m thinking you don’t like the truth too much hence the attempted derision as opposed to discussion.

If its no in a dead language its no real, aye very good.

You are wrong on a number of points

    # No one preaches in Latin. The homily is said in the vernacular.

    # I have Latin so I know what I’m saying if I pray in Latin.

  12. Joe Filippis Haircut on

For me it is good that the mass is said in the language of the country it is said in as it allows the majority to understand it and participate. It for me would be silly for all books for example to be published in Latin in the UK and it is the same for Mass. BIG PEAT OF ISLAY so young men go to college to study for years to become priests in order that they can get close to children ? where is the proof ? I believe that we are all sinners including priests and unfortunately satan gets through to many of us but there are many thousands of good priests but unfortunately like the apple one bad one spoils the barrel. I know but the Scottish government have ensured no one in Scotland is effected by bedroom tax mate

Monies I’m sure have to be moved to pay for it as do monies for no prescription charges etc

I am just stating the facts.

    ####

It was pressure from Labour that forced the SNP to take the initial steps to prevent evictions because of the Bedroom Tax (before Holyrood had the power to change the regulations). The SNP were happy to have played politics on the issue by blaming Wastemonster rather than actually doing anything.

    http://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/snp-and-labour-deal-ends-bedroom-tax-in-scotland-1-3294757

And yes the free prescription charges policy, which was intended to benefit the middle class, was paid for from the health budget.

I suppose that’s inevitable when Holyrood doesn’t have the power to raise taxes. I’m sure that’s the only reason the SNP haven’t done so.

Sorry if you misunderstood or I didn’t make myself clear

A challenge is good, we should embrace it.

However the challenge should be provided by the teams below us improving to get up to our level rather than us dumbing down to their level

I think obviously we are not as good as we were 3 / 5 years ago.

Partly that’s down to economic reality partly it’s down to the fact that a team who cannot be mentioned left the stage and the board felt no need to invest in the team in order to stay ahead.

“Oops. Opposite the garage is in the bus lane I think.”

Yes, I thought so too from google maps. I just wondered about the fact that it was only a short distance away from legitimate entry to that lane on a dark winter night at 10.40 pm would give grounds for appeal.

How many buses are heading up Maryhill Road at that time of night on a Sunday service?

    ——————————————————————————————————————————————————

I understand Glasgow City Council transport department gestapo is pretty unforgiving about bus lane transgressions. I’m sure they will insist the fine is paid no matter the excuse or time of the day.

Bus lanes are an abomination and only serve to cause more congestion in my experience. I would have more sympathy if the bus service was publicly owned and accountable. However, they’re not. They are private enterprises who get the taxpayer to provide special bus lanes for them. If they want exclusive bits of the highway (aye, the Queen’s highway) then they should pay for it themselves.

  24. A windy wet day here in G/Mouth also, like Jobo looks like a day of TV football with less chores if I can avoid them. Hopefully we get a performance and result this afternoon.

  25. Looking out of the window, I am almost sad that we got our tickets for a first visit to the Airdrie ground – weather depressing – nearly as depressing as stories in the newspapers in the last two days – alledged drunk-driving by one of our young players, and, a ‘celebratory’ night out in London after a home defeat to Motherwell.

Now I know that the tabliods play up these things, however there is no doubt that the events did happen.

When things start going wrong at football clubs, e.g. Chelsea, it always transpires that there is turmoil off the pitch that has somehow replicated itself on the pitch, leading to poor and puzzling performances.

Remember Jose was Chelsea’s most successful manager, and yet after only a few months of a dismal season he was sacked. He had a track record as a winner, but that didn’t save him.

In Ronny’s case there is no real track record and yet still a substantial number on here defend him. I don’t believe a coherent case can be put forward for him – we all know something is not right, but we can’t put our finger on it.

There has been no real progress made since his appointment – he has been given a reasonable amount of time to show that he has put his stamp on the club – there is no evidence of this despite initial talk of a new strategy, high-tempo pressing game – I think we have seen this about five times, and never in one-off must win games.

Getting back to the weather – perhaps the perfect storm is brewing at the club, whereby off the field behaviour is a contributory factor to non-performance on the field.

Just like the Chelsea case, maybe there is more to the team’s performance than meets the eye – perhaps the ‘dressing room’ is split, or, lost. I am not saying that all we read in the papers is true, however often it can be indicative of some kind of breakdown of discipline and/or respect in the background.

I said a few days ago that after today’s fixture is out of the road, I expect an announcement tomorrow that we are parting company with Ronny – I am still of that opinion, and will be looking for clues in body language and demeanour in the technical area today….as well as watching the game.

  29. Mr Pastry,

I do not believe Ronnys axing will be announced tomorrow. If that is the case Collins is stepping in as the interim and that would be a disaster. However he is a Lawwell pick so wouldn’t rule it out.

It’s clear a decision has been made to axe Ronny , it just a question of an interim/replacement ASAP. Lawwell was sounding people’s opinions out weeks ago. The surrenders at Hampden and Pittodrie have accelerated the decision making process.

If we have a new manager who again is on half of Lawwells package then we know we have another puppet/project and downsizing will continue ( apart from the protected species).

Agree Lawwell has made the decision to push Ronny under the bus….just the timing to become clear.
