Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

  1. I also witnessed a brilliant wee Aberdeen team run rings round a team 2 years older from Edinburgh. They played fitba the way it should be played, their youths should be about to start appearing as well. That was a small 7 aside thing, the young Celts were 11s.

    Come on the Celts.

  5. I remember the 1980s when we lost a few games to Aberdeen. Did we lie down -no! We kept going, fighting, so that even losing we were never upset in the way we we are today. Why? In those days we had a team with heart. Get heart into today’s team and we start improving.

  8. Heard auld Hugh Keevins on the radio today saying something about Celtic have spent in the region of £6 million on their central defensive area and, still can’t stop conceding goals…in a one horse league…being dumped out of a cup competition by a Ross County team managed on a fraction of Celtic’s resources….which would suggest that, something isny right inside Celtic Park…..he then lit the fuse that set BFSDJ onto helium mode by suggesting that Rangers are pish and, would need to spend serious money to at least compete in the SPFL and…that, that money had better be there….or, there will be a massive change of mood in quite a lot of concerned Rangers fans who are waiting to see Dave King’s money!

My wife just got done today for entering the bus lane on Maryhill Road at the junction of Queen Margaret Drive/ Bilsland Drive at 22.42 on a Sunday night.

    Fan ownership of the club?

    Nonsense.

Look at the petty squabbling and the arguments on here just for a start lol

A bloodbath it would be,absolute pandemonium fs.

The club would probably end up the same way as that old hun charade, within the space of about two seasons.

What the club needs is a strong arm dictator type, with a brain and a love of Celtic.

That looks like a very contrived statistic Why only 5 states ? do those 5 states have high or low percentages checked against the national average ?

Looks like an argument to suit a bit of catholic bashing.

Then this wee snippet about the USA.

“Adult retrospective studies show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men were sexually abused before the age of 18. This means there are more than 42 million adult survivors of child sexual abuse in the US,” said the CAC.”

  13. Good morning from a cold but dry darkest Lanarkshire, reading back here and after my comments on Leicester yesterday it seems like they are winning over more fans.

It is not rocket science, two big centre backs, full backs who can defend, a hardworking midfield and a front three with the movement of the Red Army Motorcycle Display Team.

Now, who says management is hard?

To be fair consistency of selection plays a big part and every player buying into the pattern also counts, can we learn from this? I hope so.

As for today, our own game is slap bang in the middle of a televised football feast, starting with Barca at 11am all the way to PSG at 9pm. On the way you can have Ajax v Feyenoord, Hertz v Hibs, Man U v Chelsea , Real Madrid and other bits of games. Great for the armchair fan and an indication of where the game is going.

I will be Velcro’d to the couch for most of the day, but will still get to the gym and make a decent fist of a Sunday lunch as well as a bit of ironing…all work and no play etc.

Here’s to a great day out for EK and a comfortable Celtic win with no injuries.

The fruits of Vatican II I’m afraid.

If you want to go to a real Catholic service, avoid the new Mass, it is a protestant appeasement. There are still places, some thriving, that say the Mass as it always was said. St Andrew’s on Renfrew St, Glasgow for instance.

These Priests are nothing like what the Diocese spits out. Thoroughly Catholic.

The Christ did not teach in Latin so why would it be considered a more traditional tongue than his ?

  16. Well good morning to you all and hope you are all well. Theweather in EK is not good. Pretty windy, very wet underfoot and the rain has just turned to sleet. Maybe come 3.00pm Airdrie, 15 miles doon the road, will be better for the Big Game.

Bumped into The Battered Bunnet yesterday and I understand that around 9,500 tickets have been shifted so almost a sell out.

Well look, I know you’re at it, but for the spectators… I think it’s important to point out that the Word of God is spoken at every Mass via the Gospel.

Big day today. Ronnie might be packing his suitcase tonight.

Why? Do you think we’ll lose to East Kilbride? Or even struggle?

  19. Big Peat of Islay on

Well if you want to nit pick you might say the ‘Kyrie’ is Greek and ‘Hallelujah’ is Hebrew.

But are you referring here to the liturgy or to Ronnie’s suitcase?

A bit of a statement was all I was digging at. you make such a statement then try and ignore the fact that latin was not his language but somehow any other language is no a real catholic service very wrong IMO even down to the the very basic interpretation of the word catholic.

bloody snobbery if you ask me.

Fair enough. We’ve had two bad games, don’t see that leading to defeat from a non league team who’ve already lost to our under 20s this season.

Suit yourself. No skin off my nose. Latin was the codified liturgical language because it meant a universal understanding across all nations, just as the Holy Ghost infused the Apostles at Pentecost with a universal tongue so that all may hear the Word.

We all must make our own choices and be judged on them, at the last.
