Commenting on following on from his predecessor Dr John Reid, chairman Ian Bankier, told a Celtic AGM he was not a man to deliver an insightful one-liner but Celtic’s Preliminary Results, released yesterday, are best summarised by the chairman delivering exactly, that, “This year demonstrated above all, the impact that football success brings to Celtic plc in its current shape”.

In short, there is no success, debt reduction, profit increasing, stadium improvement, squad development, retail or PR, without football success, those who suggest otherwise are overlooking the obvious.

These are wonderful financial results, delivered against an uncertain landscape when some, who should have known better, were delivering all kinds of alternative predictions for Celtic’s future, but there are cautionary tales within.

Any single event (in this case Champions League qualification) which can increase turnover by 47.7% is to be welcomed, but this is sport, where qualification cannot be guaranteed, no matter how many resources you commit to getting there.  We don’t have to look far to find the unedifying consequences of clubs who bet the tax money on getting to the Promised Land.  The challenge for Celtic is to fortify football operations every season without gambling recklessly.

In the year to 30 June 2012, when more season tickets were sold and we reached the Europa League group stage, turnover was £51.34m.  This is by no means a worst-case-scenario going forward, but it is a good budget starting point.  With operating expenses, including significant bonus and Champions League costs, coming in at £62.71m last season, our potential loss from failure to reach the Champions League is of the same order as our actual profit last year.  Any individual bad season would not wreck plans.

Like-for-like merchandising sales were up 29% on the previous year.  Celtic put this down to three elements: Champions League participation, improved retail performance, in particular at Glasgow Airport, and 125th Anniversary products.

It is likely that recent changes in the UK sports retail market has had a greater impact in Glasgow than any other UK city.  Sports Direct consumed JJB during the period and are now the overwhelmingly dominant sports retailer in the UK.  The firm’s owner is also one of the largest shareholders in a new Glasgow football team, who’s merchandising Sports Direct now operate.  I’m delighted Sports Direct own other local football brands but Mr Ashley will have discovered that you can’t ride two horses in this town.

In 2011 and 2012, with significant changes in Scottish football up for grabs, we debated the potential impact on our club.  Looking back on subsequent events it is clear to see that the arms race we were embroiled in for around a century was not good for Celtic, not good for any other Scottish club and not good for Scotland as a whole.  Football today is like a breath of fresh air compared to the way things used to be.

    Just discovered that I have 2 Champions League ticket packages going spare as friends down south cant now make the Barcelona game and are unsure about the other 2 games.

    So they are available (at face value obviously) if anybody is interested. They are in North Stand section 406 (restricted view but right on the half-way line).

    Can meet before the Morton game, or in Glasgow City centre between now and Tuesday, or before the Barca game.

  9. Auldheid , agree summer football would be worth looking at , reducing the number of games played in poor weather will help both the players and the fans. The Euro qualifiers would be played when it suits us which is preferable even with the downside that if we make it past xmas we will play these games as our pre-season.

    I also agree that European earnings should have a higher % paid to the leagues for onward fair distribution to all clubs. This shouldn’t be a Celtic gift but carried out by UEFA to lessen the creation of single rich clubs in the 2nd tier countries which the Champions league is causing.

  10. Now that we have all digested our superb financial results I am going to highlight a few figures that show REAL armageddon and will perhaps give some folk pause for thought and also some ammunition to the £34m Co-Op debt fantasists who, like me, you have to face daily.

    Here are Rangers’ turnover figures for the last few years where we had audited returns made:

    2006 – CL Last 16 – £62m

    2007 – UEFA cup – £42m

    2008 – Run to UEFA Final + CL – £65m

    2009 – £40m

    2010 – £56m

    The 2 key ones are 2009 and 2010. The ones with and without CL income. In 2010 their fixed costs for running the stadium and Murray Park were £13.5m.

    Now let us go to Transfermarkt, a website that gives indicative values of players. Here is our page :

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/celtic-fc/startseite/verein_371.html

    They have our squad valued at £49m.

    Here is their page :

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/rangers-fc/startseite/verein_124.html

    You will notice they are such a force most aren’t even valued but for my arguments sake I have done rough calculations based on how they have valued our players, and the few valuations they have attached to their squad. My fag packet says their squad is in the region of £8.5m with me trying to be as fair as possible. For arguments sake we will say £10m.

    To attempt to bridge the gap they must start qualifying for the Champions League, which really means winning the league as there is virtually no chance of an SPL team qualifying for the groups via the non-Champions route due to the quality you will face in the final round. So in a fair wind and perfect conditions, with long established revenue streams, full house of full price season books, and no CL income they were £36m short on turnover, assuming we make CL groups. If we don’t they are £20m short.

    They have to compete, and defeat over a full season, a squad worth around 5 times theirs, paying 4 times the wages whilst only having 53% of our budget.

    That is without even discussing our un-used credit facilities.

    Now as Paul points out, Sport is Sport, things can happen, but unless they get monumentally lucky with scouting (did I mention they employ NO SCOUTS full time?) or a sugar daddy comes in with something in the region of £70m to burn on their team, then they are in a very dark place.

    I would suggest that the gap is in fact almost 100% insurmountable now for them. A gap which increases each and every time we qualify for the Champions League.

    Real chicken and egg stuff for them.

    They are now a footnote for us. When they are back it will be a 4 time a year circus to distract us. Yes, now and then they may win a derby or a cup, but in football invariably what wins a league is the wage bill. Ours will now always be higher and the law of averages says that means you will more often than not win the league.

    One last thing to consider…..how many tickets will they sell when their fans realise they will more than likely ALWAYS be second fiddle from now on? That has always been their biggest danger, that is the reason behind the whole “same club” nonsense. They will not watch a team who is second fiddle. Their “glory days” are now history.

    This is probably not what Paul envisaged when he said Generation of Domination.

    Real conflicting views over the last 2/3 days amongst respected bampots on whether Sevco Rangers are likely to survive in their current incarnation. The Sevconian(George) who has been raising alarm bells has been back today with some warnings, here a taster!

    =====================================

    Clarity on accounts and transparency by board at AGM will lead to them going on a close vote BUT sadly I feel not enough Rangers fans realise the depth of trouble we are in, right now we have approximately £4.2million left of the 2 x Seasons £20 million and the share issue £22million a defecit of £37. 8MILLION pounds.

    This is a total financial disaster and a 2nd Admin is unavoidable short of them selling Ibrox and Murray Park to stave this off another few months.

    ============================================

    LONDON Fraud Squad into this and all over it like a rash. As I said last night CW/GREEN/MATHER they are ALL up to their necks in it.

    They WERE in process of getting a deal struck to sell Ibrox and Murray Park

    This will NOT happen now as they should now be interview by the police in Scotland UNDER CAUTION and the s*** will hit the fan

    ===============================================

    I am proud to have been a wee cog in motion that has led to the downfall of these CRIMINALS

    =================================================

    2 MPs are involved and a number of Press both North and South of the border literally just waiting on story to break. the problem is the same as with Whyte before Admin 100% PROOF required before the s*** storm starts

    The latest line of investigation is on the ‘laundering’ of monies through numerous companies and individuals to effectively ‘disappear’ the MILLIONS that have been STOLEN from us the fans and our club Rangers FC.

    Counting down days and praying doors go in and arrests made sooner than later. george

    ——————————————————————————–

    I am only interested in trying to save Rangers from 2nd Admin (too late I think) and getting Criminals out of our Boardroom.

    Could not care less about all the personal bickering on this and other sites

    FFS The Sons of Struth boys were formed from the first tiny Demo at Ibrox and people are on here and their site claiming they are tims/bigots/liars etc etc When it is boys like them and my friends that are the ONLY people doing anything ACTION WISE to stop the Fraudulent Crime being carried out at Ibrox

    I promise on my mother’s grave god rest her soul that there are currently REAL FACTS IN THE HANDS OF THE POLICE AND PF ABOUT THE personS THAT ARE TRYING TO PORTRAY THEMSELVES AS AN HONEST RANGERS BOARDROOM LMFAO.

    I hope this happens soon before they steal the Stadium and Murray Park SELL THEM and we end up LEASING back THAT WOULD MEAN 15 YEARS MINIMUM BEHIND CELTIC 17 IN A ROW CELTIC BEFORE WE COULD RECOVER FINANCIALLY IF EVEN THEN.

    ==========================================

    To lose a football club once may be regarded as misfortune, to lose it twice looks like carelessness.

    Re Winter Break

    Every time we have a break for International football (just about) everyone on CQN moans about the lack of Celtic football.

    IMHO this is what it would be like if we had a winter break, only it would last 10 weeks.

    I have no problem with winter football, I leave a bit longer for the journey and wear two pairs of socks.I love to see the floodlights flicker into life during the second half in winter games.

    The current summer break allows for some family time and usual summer pursuits.

    Can anyone suggest what we would do on Saturdays / Sundays during a winter break ?

    Redecorating and DIY ???

    Also from the above article

    On 16 September, a report in the Herald by senior reporter Martin Williams stated that “BBC Trust’s Editorial Standards Committee” was investigating hundreds of complaints made after BBC pundit Jim Spence made reference to “old club” Rangers during a broadcast.

    However, Newsnet Scotland has learned that no such investigation is underway by the Trust and that the Herald was made aware of the inaccuracy but has failed to correct the article.
