Reality is a different country

1769

I was asked a cracking question last night: ‘Everyone knows Rangers went into administration on 14 February 2012, but do you know what date they came out of administration?’

Can anyone guess? This is the material Cognitive Dissonance is made of.

Duff and Phelps did an incredible job. Had they stuck to Whyte’s plan, put a fait accompli to the SPL, with a matter of days to decide, ‘Our Hero’ would still own the ground, the club and would still be exalted by those who initially crowned him ‘Our Hero’, before the term became a weapon of irony.

We got a further glimpse into the goings-on at Cardiff before popular and successful manager, Malky Mackay, was sacked.  Chief exec, Simon Lim, while commenting on the £30m loss the club made last season, as a Championship club, spoke of the signing of 20-year-old striker Andreas Cornelius for £7.5m, from Copenhagen, with a £45k per week, 5 year contract, somewhat more than the £6k he was previously coping with in Denmark.

Earlier this month Malky said, “What I said at the time still stands. £7.5m was our record transfer at the time but a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward in the Premier League costs two or three times that and every team in the Premier League are striving for someone like that.”

There you have it, £7.5m is not enough to buy a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward, you’ll need two or three times that! In England, reality really is a different country (this is not me getting involved in the referendum debate, before the nationalists start trolling me again).

English football is broken in ways it is increasingly difficult to fathom. Only the persistent annual losses and ballooning debt figures offer a glimpse into what the future may hold.

Our namesakes, Belfast Celtic, withdrew from league football shortly after their players were attacked by a mob following the final whistle at game against Linfield on Boxing Day 1948. Star man, Jimmy Jones, died yesterday. The then 20-year-old was thrown over a wall and out of the stadium, breaking his leg in the process.

That was the end for Belfast Celtic but Jimmy recovered and is the Irish League’s all-time top goalscorer.

  7. a lot of talk about are we going backwards or slowly going forwards what? we play in a corrupt competition have biased and corrupt governance from socalled men who govern the game if we were not financially so far ahead the same men would makesure its un even in the league, first how our club have allowed this to be i find astounding, anywhere else such blatant disreguarding and bending of the rules of governance would have led to

mass resignations yes our plc complete cowards or also corrupt for what has been done

and for no price to be paid is scandoulous and remember we back the very same governing people in my books thats complicit.

  8. Just heard McCoist interviewed today about this being the the 2nd anniversary of administration .

He said “NOBODY could have predicted what the last 2 years have served up ……”

Really? Thousands predicted it. Thousands every day.

    Fat disaster that he is.

  11. I’ve sat back and read both sides of the the argument on here about if the board backs the fans or are they in it for the the money.

Are they compliant to the new laws that have been introduced or are they stuck between a rock and a hard place?

The new law, that is a persecution on young fans… Yes, they have been compliant.

In it for the money…no, there is more money to be made elsewhere.

As I am typing the wee rat Sally is on and that is our main problem, thems have got away with all the misdemeanours going and it chokes me as it does most.

1: The fans don’t turn up because of the crab football.

2: We, even in the bad days had at least one player, you would get out your seat when he was on the ball.

  13. Bankiebhoy1 – great post and thanks for kind words re the feature on Pat Nevin.

Personally pretty much agree with you. I heard everything he had to say and as we had advance information re sectarianism at play from within the BBC beforehand, we were well aware that Nevin had deliberately been left with the short straw. That said and after hearing four hours worth of conversation – it was a long night – I pushed him hard (advised him too) to say he was sorry. He is in my opinion a Celtic supporter who has backed himself into a corner on this and isn’t prepared to take one step back to then two forward. We told him he was stitched up but in the end he never listened. Just my view – not necessarily same as BRTH who can speak for himself.

  14. Fan a tic – BRTH wrote the feature. He is a real people person – stops the best in anyone he meets and you can’t criticise him for it. This blog is a better place for it IMO. I got questions from here and from the Mag’s Facebook page and put them all to Nevin – I said to him that many people on the blog labelled him a soup taker – he gave me a blank look and said he had no idea what that meant. I told him – all questions were asked but the real bam in all this is the supporter of a team we don’t like much who wanted to take the opportunity – while picking up wages from the public purse – to attack Celtic fans.

Who else could have pursued this other than Celtic fans themselves?

  15. Sipsini

Crab football is because a cautious coach has an obsession with mostly meaningless possession and holding a safety first position so few options for outlet passes.

Hard to tell if we have any real creative bum of the seats type of players as our coach prefers ball and position retention.Flair players take unwelcome risks.

Sorry, fan-a tic, but I think you have completely misconstrued what I was saying about some of the players in the history of our area.

At NO point was I suggesting that these people who had been mentioned in earlier posts were in any way heroic.

    THEY WERE NOT.

..But neither were they one dimensional.

What I was alluding to was the way that the hard-men ( Thugs,…if you prefer) settled their differences in those distant days.

They met & fought ONE on ONE.

I was not suggesting that they were admirable people.

    I knew them.

They were flawed & not particularly bright individuals.

But how they resolved their disputes is, from todays perspective, the stuff of FANTASY.

I make no apology for what I said about guys who were part of my experience & who made a lot of wrong decisions.

    Who am I to judge.

I read the Nevin interview with great interest. V much appreciate the work you Ghuys put in to make it happen.

Some posters feel he should gave given in tight(er). I feel that does you Ghuys a disservice. It wasn’t an interview under caution or a bright light.

Rather you let his words, silence, actions and inactions speak for themselves.

I find it incomprehensible that someone who was brought up so much within the Celtic community could fail to see the damage and anger that his words caused. He’s either incredibly myopic or lacking in wider awareness or…..

I won’t condemn him if he feels unable to say more for fear of being blackballed. We all have to compromise when we have families to feed.

But the gaps in his replies are even more telling and persuasive than his replies.

    Many thanks for your role.

To me that is were one of the problems is.

Win, lose or draw, let the players play their game, within reason, don’t change them to suit a boring format that is a win at all costs.

    Then again…cups!
