Reality is a different country

1769

I was asked a cracking question last night: ‘Everyone knows Rangers went into administration on 14 February 2012, but do you know what date they came out of administration?’

Can anyone guess? This is the material Cognitive Dissonance is made of.

Duff and Phelps did an incredible job. Had they stuck to Whyte’s plan, put a fait accompli to the SPL, with a matter of days to decide, ‘Our Hero’ would still own the ground, the club and would still be exalted by those who initially crowned him ‘Our Hero’, before the term became a weapon of irony.

We got a further glimpse into the goings-on at Cardiff before popular and successful manager, Malky Mackay, was sacked.  Chief exec, Simon Lim, while commenting on the £30m loss the club made last season, as a Championship club, spoke of the signing of 20-year-old striker Andreas Cornelius for £7.5m, from Copenhagen, with a £45k per week, 5 year contract, somewhat more than the £6k he was previously coping with in Denmark.

Earlier this month Malky said, “What I said at the time still stands. £7.5m was our record transfer at the time but a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward in the Premier League costs two or three times that and every team in the Premier League are striving for someone like that.”

There you have it, £7.5m is not enough to buy a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward, you’ll need two or three times that! In England, reality really is a different country (this is not me getting involved in the referendum debate, before the nationalists start trolling me again).

English football is broken in ways it is increasingly difficult to fathom. Only the persistent annual losses and ballooning debt figures offer a glimpse into what the future may hold.

Our namesakes, Belfast Celtic, withdrew from league football shortly after their players were attacked by a mob following the final whistle at game against Linfield on Boxing Day 1948. Star man, Jimmy Jones, died yesterday. The then 20-year-old was thrown over a wall and out of the stadium, breaking his leg in the process.

That was the end for Belfast Celtic but Jimmy recovered and is the Irish League’s all-time top goalscorer.

Was MON not interviewed for a job in England before his wife took ill?

    —–

I believe he was falsely accused by the Record of meeting someone from Leeds United (at a petrol station if memory serves).

It was probably Keevins but hey MON’s interest in legal matters , where allowed some practical application, as he skinned £500K in damages from the Record ….

Maybe some of the bhoys can confirm …

    ————————-

There are other pieces about this but the link below shows that MON was prepared to go.

“Last year in Europe was fab, this year the pits.”

I agree. But reaching the last 16 last season would indicate we are not ‘useless in Europe’ as Charlie was claiming.

“Are we going backwards or is it just a hiccup?”

Time will tell. But we punched above our weight last season and we are in the fourth pot for a good reason. The fact Celtic compete at that level at all is an achievement lost on some people.

We have played Barcelona 10 times in the last 10 years. The hiding was always going to come. They have battered teams will greater resources than Celtic on countless occasions.

All we can do is qualify and do our best once we are there.

    The operative word is ARE

    Last season we WERE

The period relating to the word ARE would be in the last year – have a look at the results and the goals against and tell me again that you agree that we ARE good in Europe

    MON Celtic Legend.

Unlike WGS and NFL he was never bought off by PL.

Not only in posts but also in leader articles CQN has saught to denigrate MON and that era.

If you are just a mouth peiece for Peter Lawwell what do you expect its a yolk aroudn teh mans neck.

Anyway you dress it up Celtic will never compete in another European final while PL carries out DD orders.

Welcome to the slow lane its just nor profitable enough as last years transfer window demonstrated.

MON – He let a new generation know what being a big time club was again. His signing success on all his big buys was immense also.

Maybe if we had traded more in those days (£10 million for Agathe?) we could have had a sustainable model- one that would have battered Ajax home and away.

Cheers philbhoy, I’m going to high tail it into the metropolis of Forfar and see if they have it there. I think the one I saw in lidl (brechin) was a 12 Y.O. blend. might give that a go. They also had a 5 Y.O. malt.

Vmhan, any news on the GB surprise for Sunday? I had a look on their site but all I could see was that they’re planning a meet at the London Rd CSC before the game.

  13. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

“We didn’t spend £50m on a player last summer, and I think a few people were surprised by that, and there are no plans to spend big this summer either,” Fergie said. “We’re looking at something different. We’ve signed Chris Smalling for £10m, Javier Hernández for £6m and Mame Biram Diouf for £4m and a bit. People clamouring for big signings are missing the point; £20m is a lot of money to spend on young players, but that’s what we like to do, get players who are going to develop in the club, because the long-term view has got to be important here.”

  16. Occasionally the referendum debate surfaces here.

Last night’s Question Time threw up an interesting aside on the matter. Supporting Osborne’s stance on the currency debate, the Labour’s representative on the panel referred twice, if not three times to England being asked to bale us out should a pound retaining Independent Scotland find itself in difficulties. No mention of other UK members such as Wales and Northern Ireland having to dig deep to rescue Scotland.

A perhaps unconscious demonstration of how Westminster’s only concern is

    England, England and England.

  17. MON was the best manager we have had since Mr Stein

He took a team that had lost 4-0 ( going on 6 or 7) at the bigotdome and with some real solid additions destroyed them 6-2 in the next derby -a couple of months later

MON ‘s team gave us some of our best ever Celtic days

They destroyed the Huns on and off the park

Like all managers -even Mr Stein -he had his faults but to accuse him of fabricating his wife

    is well out of order

If you wish to judge Celtic on this season alone then we finished fourth in the table as fourth seed in the group.

    Maybe some realism is required.

  19. Of course it should read “fabricate his wife’s illness”
