Rebalance needed in Celtic central-mid

541

Transfer window business is seldom completed in May, so anticipation based on Neil Lennon’s post-match comments about having bid £3m for a player should be tempered.  We have a long close-season ahead, so I’ll avoid giving a name-check to the teenage midfielder Neil watched on international duty in February and who is being touted as a target today.

The most obvious question emerging from this story is why another central midfielder?  Celtic have Wanyama, Ki, Brown, Ledley and Kayal all battling for places there, but it’s Kris Commons who is a rare entity.  Kris is able to create goals at a rate none of the rest can.  He’s also had a disappointing season, much of which was spent watching the action from the side-lines.

The problem for Celtic in central-mid is balance.  When Kris Commons is injured, off-form, or playing in a wide position, we’re short of creativity in the middle.  For the record, creativity doesn’t mean someone who can turn in a tight space or dribble, Charlie Mulgrew was our most creative player last season (as it now is). This strong area of the squad needs rebalanced.

You can buy a small vibration tuner that can clip onto the head of the guitar and gives you a visual check whether any string is flat or sharp – will work for acoustic or electric.

Rod Petrie insists SPL must maintain integrity despite financial cost

Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie has given a strong hint he would vote against a ‘newco’ Rangers entering the Scottish Premier League by declaring “integrity is beyond purchase”.

The Charles Green-fronted consortium which has signed a deal to take control of Rangers hope to take the club out of administration through a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA). However, the group say they will form a new company to purchase the club’s assets if a CVA is rejected by creditors.

SPL clubs have twice postponed a vote on possible sanctions for ‘newco’ clubs and are due to meet again on 30 May, when the 12 clubs will assume control of any decision on whether a newco Rangers can acquire the share of the current club, with an 8-4 majority decision needed.

Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston has signalled he would accept a newco Rangers for financial reasons. But Petrie last night claimed that money should not come into the equation.

He told BBC Radio Scotland: “That’s fundamental to us at our club, to make sure the integrity of the game is not called into question and that the sporting integrity of the competition we take part in is maintained at the highest standards. It’s not a question of any sum of money in return for that integrity – integrity is beyond purchase.

“It’s important that all clubs can have a place within football, provided they have earned it in a sporting sense and also have abided by the rules.”

Rangers fans have threatened action against clubs who act against their club’s interests, while supporters of other clubs have threatened to walk away from the SPL if it contains a ‘newco’ Rangers that could not agree a deal with creditors.

“It’s vital part of what we do, listening to supporters,” Petrie said. “It’s important we understand what they are thinking and it’s also important we are able to explain the dynamics of the landscape in front of us.

“If we are called upon to make any decisions we will try to do the right thing and uphold the integrity of the competition that we are engaged in.”

Celtic last week stated their guiding principle would be the best interests of the club and supporters, consistent with upholding the “interests and reputation of Scottish football”.

Speaking about the difficulties facing Scottish football in general, Petrie continued: “We need to find a future for football that people want to be part of.

“We’re one of the leading clubs in the country and we have to play our part in making sure we have a successful and vibrant game. A game that’s attractive to supporters.

“The game touches almost every household in the country.

“Where we are failing a little bit at the moment is getting the balance between those who are willing to make a contribution, supporters and television.

“Our supporters want games at three o’clock on a Saturday and we have to balance that against the needs of a television audience.

“Of course, TV viewers want to see games played out in front of big, enthusiastic, crowds.

Just thinking about Yorkshires equivalent of Charles Endell esq and his bluster (apologies slipped into a Speirsy) in relation to the CVA.

£8.5m, do me a favour! , subtract say £2.5m for Duff £ Phelps , and if they prioritise football debt that’s another £2.5m (?) and with the rising interest charges and a few other TBCs which get firmed up that will offset removal of the Bond holders ….. So that leaves the unsecured creditors with:

3.5 / 134 = 2.6 pence in the pound…… CVA will fail ….. SFA refuse transfer of football license on the basis that it break every known natural law of football …. Boom…

  8. Allgreen tthinks SPL are at it on

What would you do if the Huns owed you money and you read about their latest hundreds of millions of investment moonbeams?

If they are so wealthy surely you would refuse the CVA as these plans suggest they could pay in full.

  9. CHARLES GREEN’S consortium will hand Ally McCoist a multi-million pound war chest this summer – if the Scottish Football Association can be persuaded to drop their transfer embargo.

Express Sport spoke to one of Green’s backers, former Sheffield United owner Mike McDonald, and he admitted that their group have serious wealth that has been put together from the medical worlds of Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and Singapore alongside major investment from European and UK property developers.

Top football agent Paul Stretford will also have a major involvement in the football operation, helping the club to buy and sell players.

McDonald admitted that once Green’s consortium complete their takeover and sort out the debts they are willing to plough significant amounts into the team to help McCoist’s team to become big players in Scotland and the Champions League.

That investment, however, may have to be delayed unless Wednesday’s SFA appeal against their one-year transfer ban is overturned.

“It is pointless to get involved if we weren’t going to invest in the playing side right away,” McDonald stated.

“We see that as a major priority, although, obviously, that is dependent on the Scottish Football Association’s transfer embargo. We know that Ally McCoist needs to strengthen his team and also to keep some of the players he already has at the club.

“We have got all our funding together for every aspect of the take over and now it is just a case of sorting it out. Charles has had a good conversation with Ally McCoist and we want him to carry on managing the team. Charles has brought significant funds to the table because we know we need hundreds of millions to be successful at this level.

“There are a lot of people who are in this game for the publicity and think they can run a football club on a shoestring but it just isn’t possible, I know that. We will not be throwing silly money at things like Manchester City but we know we have to have enough money to carry our plans out.”

It was McDonald who advised Green to get a group of businessmen together if he was really serious about buying Rangers. He admitted: “That is the reason why there is a consortium involved because unless you are a sheikh or you have extreme wealth then it is very difficult for one person to fund a big-name football club, like Rangers.

“I told Charles that if he wanted to do it then he would need to go down the road of a consortium so we would have the financial clout that Rangers needed. Charles has gone away and done that and that is why we will have money coming from Europe, the UK, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and Singapore.”

McDonald has also assured the Rangers fans that Green’s consortium are the real deal. They have the funds and the backers and they also know the football world and are committed to the club in the long-term – with the Champions League success their ultimate goal.

“Every one of the consortium wants to get Rangers back where they should be,” McDonald admitted. “It is a massive club and it should be at the forefront of British and European football. Why can’t that be done? I know it can’t be achieved overnight but we have a long-term plan to achieve that goal. We have to sort the club out and to get them back on a stable and sound financial footing. Charles is definitely in it for the long haul.”

Green has been given the green light from Duff and Phelps to take Rangers out of administration and they hope to have their deal completed by next month. The new owners plan to go down the road of a Creditors Voluntary Agreement although they have put a fall-back newco plan in place should they fail.

They are also aware many of McCoist’s first-team can also leave this summer as a result of clauses put into contracts when they agreed wage cuts with the administrators.

  10. Rangers have another tax bill due to be paid this Friday and the quarterly VAT is due the last day of the month.

If Charles Green has a war chest to buy players for Rangers in the summer if the transfer ban is lifted. He should use the money to pay back the creditors instead of looking for ways to dump them with next to nothing.Mr.Green just in case you hadnt notice your club owes millions to people that it stole from it is usual to try and sort out that mess before spending on new players that would be the decent thing to do but of course its Rangers we are talking about here and they dont know what the word decency means.H.H.

  13. Dignity?

The shameless scum owe a fortune to other clubs but are discussing terms with Gattuso!

If the other SPL clubs vote a Newco back in we need to seriously think about a Bhoycott of away games.

  14. So the consortium have a war chest planned for new players next year…never heard that one before from a new ibrokes saviour, maybe its the same war chest as last year and someone has just found it beneath a pile of shredded bills? anyways the war chest story is only usurped by the fact Guardiola will be flown in to replace the yum yum king.

  21. Celtic bid for Mills in swap transfer Tuesday, May 15, 2012 Leicester Mercury

    Follow

Celtic have made a bid for Leicester City’s out-of-favour former captain Matt Mills.

The Scottish champions are offering defender Kelvin Wilson in a possible swap deal.

The Hoops are understood to have made City the offer of 26-year-old Wilson in exchange for Mills, who appears to have no future at City under manager Nigel Pearson.

Right-back Lee Peltier could also be on his way out of the King Power Stadium after talks over a new contract stalled.

Although he still has two years of his current deal to run, Peltier could be one of the victims of a summer clear-out, despite only joining City last summer from Huddersfield Town and becoming the first-choice right-back.

Mills was Sven-Goran Eriksson’s big summer signing last year, arriving from Reading in a deal that was potentially worth close to £5 million.

However, after the sacking of Eriksson, Mills failed to impress new boss Pearson.

The City manager is looking to carry out a big reconstruction of his squad this summer in a bid to turn the team into genuine promotion challengers after a disappointing campaign.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has denied, in the Scottish media, that there has been contact with City about Wilson.

But the Mercury understands he is keen to land Mills and is prepared to offer Wilson in exchange.

Wilson has had a difficult first season for Celtic since arriving on a free transfer and has made just 21 appearances, mainly due to a torn Achilles heel injury, which kept him out of action for more than three months last year.

With Rangers refused SPL entry, we should be man enough to move on and forget about the clubs who voted for their acceptance.
