Rebalance needed in Celtic central-mid

541

Transfer window business is seldom completed in May, so anticipation based on Neil Lennon’s post-match comments about having bid £3m for a player should be tempered.  We have a long close-season ahead, so I’ll avoid giving a name-check to the teenage midfielder Neil watched on international duty in February and who is being touted as a target today.

The most obvious question emerging from this story is why another central midfielder?  Celtic have Wanyama, Ki, Brown, Ledley and Kayal all battling for places there, but it’s Kris Commons who is a rare entity.  Kris is able to create goals at a rate none of the rest can.  He’s also had a disappointing season, much of which was spent watching the action from the side-lines.

The problem for Celtic in central-mid is balance.  When Kris Commons is injured, off-form, or playing in a wide position, we’re short of creativity in the middle.  For the record, creativity doesn’t mean someone who can turn in a tight space or dribble, Charlie Mulgrew was our most creative player last season (as it now is). This strong area of the squad needs rebalanced.

If there is a scam at RFC (IA) involving these parties then perhaps Agent Whyte might pass on his floating charge to Ticketbus in exchange for non-pursuance? Whyte trousers £27m (some to Withey) and £18m floater goes to Ticketus?

Whyte leaves scene of crime well rewarded. If Ticketus then get stadium etc they could rent back. They have described themselves as ‘patient’.

Hibs chairman Rod Petrie has told BBC Scotland that sporting integrity should come before any financial benefit to Scottish Premier League clubs.

Rangers face possible sanctions should they emerge as a new company, while the SPL is also investigating claims of undeclared payments to Ibrox players.

Several club officials have expressed commercial fears about a top flight without Rangers.

However, Petrie said: “Integrity is beyond purchase.”

In the last few days, the managers of St Johnstone, St Mirren and Inverness have all said their clubs would suffer if the large support Rangers bring was lost.

Others are concerned that television and sponsorship deals for the league would be withdrawn or revised.

“It’s important to us that the integrity of the competition that we take part is maintained to the highest standards,” added Petrie.

“It’s not a question of any sum of money in return for that integrity

“It’s important that all clubs can have a place within football provided they have have earned it in a sporting sense and have abided by the rules.”

Many supporters are uneasy at the prospect of a “newco” Rangers entering the SPL.

Top-flight clubs have twice delayed voting on proposed new financial fair play and are due to discuss the matter further on 30 May.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said last week concerns of his club’s fans would be taken into account when voting on Rangers’ future.

And Petrie echoed those sentiments, saying: “Listening to supporters is a vital part of what we do.

“It’s important that we understand what they are thinking and that we are able to explain the dynamics of the landscape that’s in front of us.

“If we are called upon to make any decisions, we will try and do the right thing and uphold the integrity of the competition that we are engaged in.

“We need to find a future for football that people want to be part of.

“We’re one of the leading clubs in the country and we have to play our part in making sure we have a successful and vibrant game. A game that’s attractive to supporters.

“The game touches almost every household in the country.

“Where we are failing a little bit at the moment is getting the balance between those who are willing to make a contribution, supporters and television.

“Our supporters want games at three o’ clock on a Saturday and we have to balance that against the needs of a television audience.

“Of course, TV viewers want to see games played out in front of big, enthusiastic, crowds.”

Fortunately he appears to have read, and taken head of, my posts, hence the dramatic improvement in his performance.

It’s the only explanation I can think of for the turnaround in his play.

We clearly need a Central defender since the one we had is not coming. We need another fast forward option a la Cadete. And a keeper if FF is not signing.

    And…………….. an honest league.

Is it not more plausible that Whyte and Ticketus have been working as one from the start?

Whyte has a floating charge and guarantees the debt to Ticketus on the back of it?

The idea that Ticketus, who operate in a rather dodgy area of asset finance, were duped, doesn’t ring true. They knew the huns were bust. They knew Whyte was dodgy. They didn’t just hand over shed loads of cash on a wing and a prayer.

    Re Kojo,

one of his alter egos, Collie2, posted yesterday or the day before so we can assume he is still in the land of the living.

  20. Who owns Murray Park?

I understood that there are securities over the land at Auchenhowie in favour of Kelvinside Academy War Memorial Trust.

It depends on the War Memorial Trust Charter terms what they can or can’t do but if it is governed by a Royal Charter and the terms are specific as to the purpose it can or cannot be used for. If it is by Charter then the only way the terms can be changed is by application to the Sovereign.

I would imagine that the benefactor didn’t envisage Dick Advocat wanting a training ground or Craig Whyte wanting to build houses, so an application to the Queen via her Privy Counsellors to change the terms would be difficult one would imagine.

    Just wondering aloud.

That kind of suggests that the Board are prepared to go along with (to the extent of having contingency plans in place) the idea of a newco huns in the SPL.

It’s difficult to construe those words in any other way.

I had planned on visiting the great city in June to see Bruce Springsteen but can no longer go. So, if you are going to see Bruce or even if you’re not and just fancy a weekend in Manchester, trying to flog my room (hotel won’t take cancellation). Family room, two nights, Friday 22 and Sat 23 June, cost me £208, happy to get £150 for it. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170842733971

I always associate (or a successor to it).” the word successor with the word success – so no. nothing to worry about!

  27. Rod Petrie has given me a reason to favour Hibernian in a game I wasn’t exactly neutral about as I just want Hearts battered.

Re the article, dunno if you need creativity in the middle (Brown and Ledley, or Kayal) if you play Forrest and Samaras wide of a fron two. Different formations bring different attacking options. Just think it’s too linear an argument to say we need a creative midfielder when we have a creative centre-back (Charlie), wing-backs and Samaras and Forrest. The last two make things happen in games – commit players, win set-pieces and create goals. That sounds creative to me.

  28. Well Done to Neil and the coaching staff and all the players for winning the SPL in magnificent style this season. Let’s hope we can make it 13 in a row next season and keep winning it playing football the proper way.

From the bits I saw of the game, Sammi looked fantastic and Hoops had a dream game, nice timing epecially with Hodgson just in the England position.

Good luck to all the Bhoys playing at the Euros and the best of luck in the future to all the Bhoys leaving this Summer, it must be very difficult to leave such a Great club especially when it is on the cusp of something special.

I have liked the look of the 3 at the back against the SPL teams and it suits our skillful fullbacks/wingbacks but it will be a very bold move to go into the CL qualifiers with this formation. I think Udinese used the 3 at the back against us and it must have impressed Neil.
