Recruiting players of CCV and Jota quality

245

Last summer Celtic concluded the permanent transfers of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota, both previously on loan at the club, early in the summer, as did free agent Aaron Mooy.  We did not need to contend with selling clubs for any of these deals, as options had already been signed with Tottenham and Benfica.

The only other new contracted player who made any impression on the season was Sead Haksabanovic, he arrived in the final week of the window.

Two years ago, during Ange Postecoglou’s first window, Liel Abada arrived early, Kyogo and Carl Starfelt (only just) joined for the start of the league campaign, and Joe Hart arrived a few days later.  Those we paid transfer fees for that summer came from peripheral markets, not dissimilar to the business we have done this year.

The business carried out in the last two summers was exceptional and exactly what the club needed.  Much of the important work, specifically brining Carter-Vickers and Jota to the club, had to wait until deadline day.

You, me, Brendan, the board and the ballboys know there are gaps in the squad.  Filling them with players of Carter-Vickers and Jota quality is difficult, but that is what Celtic are trying to do right now.  If work like this was easy, others would do it and we would not win so many trophies.

That team scares the life out of me for Ibrox. Not a dig at you – I’m aware it’s probably the best we can put out right now.

  2. Maeda & Abada don’t work. Even in Ange’s system.

    No more please.

I’m holding out for Ibrox giving us a new GK, AJ at Right back, KT at Left back, Prodence giving TavPen nightmares and Fabien Reider strutting his stuff in minefield alongside Tommy Doyle.

Ibrahimovic a 2nd half sub with a hat trick.

    5-0 to us.

  3. I am as puzzled as most are by the low energy press engagements that BR has been showing since he returned. I am less inclined than most, to attempt to interpret what this means as I don’t have info on the inside workings of our club.

Many are trying to resolve thee cognitive difference between their expectations, not based on anything BR has said, that his return was a victory for the “just spend big” movement and a defeat for PL and the biscuit tin. Everything the club has done so far and everything that bR has said has undermined their confidence in what they promised to themselves but none of these promises were made by DD, BR or any member of the Lawwell family.

We appear, so far, to have continued the model we have been running since MON left, the one criticised as “slow lane”. It is, so far, not a speculate to accumulate model. We are buying younger, potential talents and hoping they will turn out like Jota, CCV, Hatate, Kyogo and AJ. None of them can achieve that status within 3 games of a Scottish season starting, but I have high hopes that bot Nawrocki and Lagerbielke can reach, at least, Starfelt levels and maybe, if we’re lucky CCV levels, given time and a settled defence. I have high hopes that Yang can reach the levels of Roberts and Forrest and Abada, and maybe, if we’re lucky, Jota. I have a good idea that Holm can be as successful as Armstrong, Ki-Sun Yeung, N’tcham, Johansen etc and might, if we’re lucky, reach Calmac levels.

Point is- they haven’t had time to establish at Celtic.

The “quality” we haven’t allegedly replaced was not quality when they arrived.

Ange Postecoglou was a cheap option Peter-Lawell-stooge panic appointment

CCV was a Spurs Durand we were conned into paying over the odds for him

Jota was a Benfica starlet that they were willing to let go as they had better or similar available.

Starfelt wasn’t in a Sweden team that preferred that dudHelander (that was one of my judgements BTW)

Mooy was playing in China and had never played for anyone other than relegation fodder Huddersfield or Brighton (pre-Potter & Zerbi)

We need to give these players time to become good players with us as we had to do with the players we now claim to miss.

Brendan has come back and has accepted the realities of managing an SPFL club and the realities of cooperation in player recruitment, just as he accepted it at the beginning of his first spell and as he did with Liverpool and Leicester. He has, perhaps, recognised that his player judgements, as evidenced by Gamboa, De Vries and Toure, maybe needed input from others.

I can reconcile and accept all that. He has also maybe had his ego damaged by being sacked for a 2nd time by an ungrateful Leicester but……

He really needs to start projecting his confidence/arrogance, charm/smarm, ebullience and intimidation in his spoken comments about our club or we are going to continue to think he has become an empty shell of a man. We need straight talking from him not side of the mouth dog whistling that he is not to blame.

I think he can do it. he has pride in himself and knows he has done this before.

I also think, as with most years, we will have a few late window additions to galvanise us. We always have done, even under Ange so no need to see this as panic.

I think we have a management team working in harmony but, we are not projecting an energy about the project. No buzz, as Paul McStay might say. It’s time to put on a bit of a show, Brendan.

  4. “Those we paid transfer fees for that summer came from peripheral markets…”

To anyone in the wider world, Scottish clubs and players come from a peripheral market/league.

Again, mibby why its hard to entice real talent to ply their trade in Ecosse amid given the games sorta bleak context.

No Way were Sevco ‘Really strong” in last nights PSV game, quite the reverse. They were outperformed in all the main match stats by some distance and did not control any part of the game apart from 6 minutes of injury time. Their first goal was their first shot of the first half coming from a deflected pass off the heel of a PSV defender, and their second was marginally onside by millimetres. PSV were absolutely robbed, but they did not create enough in the Sevco box. Sevco also had 5 Yellows and were smashing into tactical deliberate fouls and were lucky to finish without a red.

What can we learn from PSV?

Well for starters PSV do lack a creative technical forward like Kyogo who can create and quickly play on the shoulder and Rangers pressed and ran like their lives depended on it which they wont be able to maintain by the time of the Ibrox game. Also we have more natural width than PSV and we are not as narrow in general in midfield and we dont play such a high line and we do have defenders comfortable on the ball. It will be more of a physical battle at the BigotLand in September, but if we match up physically I am confident of a result. Anything other than a win will for Sevco will destroy thei self-confidence. It will all be about matching them physically

  6. A new colleague started last week and he sits about 6 metres away from me at Paradise.

Davie Hay did not deserve sacking ever.

It was that Board who deserved sacking. Davie had a great eye for a player but was really given no backing. Celtic allowed Brian McClair, Alan McInally and Le Petit Merde to walk in the same window. That was not Davie’s choice. The Board threw a great man under the bus.

SAINT STIVS – It looked totally offside, and even most orcs admitted that it looked offside. I havent seen a freeze frame image but apparently he was level from the other angle so maybe he was but it was massively lucky

  9. Prestonpans bhoys on

That game yesterday was an old production from the manager with no surname, who managed to take dross to Manchester.

Moreover they can’t play that way against us, so open to attack, expect the first 15 minutes to be 100 mph pressing from them. Hold out and they will tire especially latter in the game.

  10. ESPIRITODECELT on 23RD AUGUST 2023 2:15 PM

You watched the same game as me.

They are a very limited team. They always seem to start poorly which is a sign that whatever the coach is saying to them in the lead up to the game either isn’t getting through or isn’t working.

I used to think they had a good coach. I don’t think so any more. Their style is easy to play against by any sort of team. Big and powerful is outdated, it’s getting shown up by some very average teams.

Their performances this season are poor, worse than ours at a critical time and with a fully fit squad to pick from.

  11. Daizen Maeda has now played 74 games for celtic, scoring 19 goals and having 13 assists.

He cost £1.3m, and is aged 25.

    He is a Japanese Internationalist.

If he plays, I think he will score at Ibrox.

He had 2 league titles and winners medals in both cups.

  12. The zombies looked worryingly strong last night’

My first belly laugh of the day.

    Aye, I certainly wasn’t worried.

Dessers, Danilo & Sima are a step down from Tillman, Kent and Morelos. They’re completely reliant on a Norwich failure for their creativity in midfield and have two 30+ full backs to provide their width.

  13. I wasn’t overly impressed by Sevco but I’m still not betting against them nicking a win out there – deserved or otherwise. PSV had flaws too. I’m glad we don’t have to play these qualifiers. We’ve lost to worse teams than PSV with better teams than this.

AN DÚN on 23RD AUGUST 2023 2:35 PM

Spot on lad. Totally agree. Sevco pressed like lunatics for the entire 90 last night because they had to do so against a vastly more talented opponent. By the time of the derby at BigotLand, they would have had played Ross County and PSV away and simply won’t have the legs to press like they did last night. Their centre-backs played well last night but their full-backs stayed inside their own half the entire match and so they created very little and should have been out of the tie but PSV didnt really create enough chances in their box despite their total domination of that match.

  15. If only we’d worried this much about Kilmarnock….

I can only imagine the huns confidence after viewing our shitshow at Rugby Park.

Big game on Saturday. Big reaction needed. Not sure any of us seen the transition from Angeball to Brendyball being this painful.

Not sure I get the hubris round the huns. If Marley Watkins, Jordan White and Bojan Miovski can score against us, I’m sure the Hun forwards will fancy it too.

As SEAMUS MHOR says, even the Fat Gardener thought he was opffside. I was watching the game in a ‘Rangers-leaning’ pub (distinct absence of any Hunnish behaviour or attitudes) and the concensus was it was off.

Awfy, awfy tight it was and certainly looked off from general play, but if the VAR was being run by Eufa or their reps I suppose you must assume that it was just on.

In Bonnie Scotland a Celtic goal would have been flagged in the first place, it was that tight.

    An Anti-Immigrant Xenophobe

William Poole became a leader of the Bowery Boys, a nativist, anti-Catholic, anti-Irish gang in antebellum Manhattan. The street gang was associated with the xenophobic, pro-Protestant Know-Nothing political movement, which flourished in New York in the 1840s and 50s.

The public face of this movement was the American Party, which maintained that the droves of Irish immigrants fleeing famine for the United States would ruin the U.S.’s democratic and Protestant values.

David Hay was also the only manager, to my recollection, to speak out publicly about biased refereeing.

After Stuart Syme’s disgraceful refereeing in a narrow League Cup final victory for Rangers over Celtic, Hay slaughtered the match officials in his post-match interview and even suggested “We’d be as well joining the English league to get a level playing field.”
