Recruiting players of CCV and Jota quality

245

Last summer Celtic concluded the permanent transfers of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota, both previously on loan at the club, early in the summer, as did free agent Aaron Mooy.  We did not need to contend with selling clubs for any of these deals, as options had already been signed with Tottenham and Benfica.

The only other new contracted player who made any impression on the season was Sead Haksabanovic, he arrived in the final week of the window.

Two years ago, during Ange Postecoglou’s first window, Liel Abada arrived early, Kyogo and Carl Starfelt (only just) joined for the start of the league campaign, and Joe Hart arrived a few days later.  Those we paid transfer fees for that summer came from peripheral markets, not dissimilar to the business we have done this year.

The business carried out in the last two summers was exceptional and exactly what the club needed.  Much of the important work, specifically brining Carter-Vickers and Jota to the club, had to wait until deadline day.

You, me, Brendan, the board and the ballboys know there are gaps in the squad.  Filling them with players of Carter-Vickers and Jota quality is difficult, but that is what Celtic are trying to do right now.  If work like this was easy, others would do it and we would not win so many trophies.

  1. “Maeda & Abada don’t work. Even in Ange’s system.“

    Results suggest otherwise

4,5,4 and 2 goals scored in the 5 games they started in the same team.

Abada is struggling in Brendan’s system but he’s young and relatively inexperienced. Hes also a human being who should be able to learn new things in his job and he has a great teacher to help him.

Three games is far too earky to write anybody in this team off

  2. Saying that we also scored 4 and 3 goals when he started this season so it can work in BR’s system

  3. It’s about opinions, eh.

Mine is thar Brenda is not the man for us , sorry.

Said before, he’s a busted flush, end of.

    Shit, I hope I’m wrong

Heard loads of Huns call him that!

John McGinn’s transfer fee alone is probably Hibs’ budget or the rough value of their squad.

They had no chance against Villa.

They have given their all but are way short of what is required.

There are probably as many English players in Hibs’ squad as there are in Villa’s.

It goes to show how football and the money has wrecked it.

Your mind seems fixed that any critique of a player is about rinsing him fella. It’s not.

Jota was our standout winger. Meada and Abada have qualities but aren’t traditional wingers. More converted forwards. Abada is about ghosting into the box and finding cute spaces to score. He needed Jota to create magic and whip it in, or play passing lanes with an O’Riley or Taylor even. Poor on 121s.

Maeda is an elite pressing machine, runs in behind but awful technically on 1 on 1.

In Rodgers system, they recieve the ball 30 yards out and are expected to take on full backs with trickery. Not happening. Square holes and round pegs. Killie away was evidence for it.

Once agin, good players but stengths are not what Rodgers wants in a winger. He needs to sort that out. You can have 1 but having both leaves us easy to ply against in low blocks.

I agree, Pedro does what he is told, but and always the but, he will have a free reign to do as he wishes within a set remit and he is actually very good at his job, given that I believe he shouldn’t be anywhere near the club due to the way the Res 12 bhoys were lied to and strung along it’s a difficult position to be in at times.

    Tet.

Would you not think he(PL) was doing his masters bidding regards res12?

Why except him regards that resolution? His own(PL)shareholding is meagre,

It would have been very hard to carry, rough fag packet calc

Dont get me wrong Tet it was an intellegently worded resolution, but was doomed as soon as it was deferred when intro’d at AGM imo,

  12. They can work together though. You’ve written them off in the same team which isn’t just unhelpful it’s incorrect.

    Really?

For every project that’s a real success there are 3 or 4 who are never good enough.

  15. With everything I’m reading on the internet about our players I amazed we managed to have a record breaking team full of them last season.

Too small, slow, weak, unable to play together in different systems.

If it’s all true, and we need a considerable overhaul to play in the way BR apparently wants then he wasn’t the right man after all

A treble winning team needed a few adjustments and improvements, not an overhaul

They play in winning teams is your argument. You’ve obviously glazed over the Killie debacle as an example when they don’t, or the drop in our wing play this season as the system changes and the quality goes.

Don’t know what to do with that kind of analysis but feck it, life’s too short.

  17. and you can give me an example of the club that gets every player development right ?

and every transfer a success ?

celtic are good at it, that is why we have lots of money in the bank.

    great strategy, brilliantly executed.

if you are in cash surplus it is a success, that is the metric that matters.

  18. This is a terrible look for the SPL and anyone living in England who has to put up with the constant hilarious farmers league banter.

But Aston Villa we’re the second best team in the best league in the world last season after the new year, they have a manager who’s won loads of European trophies and they have spent £300m in the last 3 years. £90m on a cb and a winger this window

Your argument was that they don’t work and never have. My argument is they do and they have.

We’ve scored 4 at home and 3 at Aberdeen in the two other games. You’re ignoring obvious examples

  20. Some players work well in a rigid system of Angeball. We were relentless in style until we weren’t. Anyone remember how crap the last few weeks of the season were. On fumes. We’ll never get to judge 3rd season Angeball that never ended well elsewhere.

Some players are exposed when the system changes. Doesn’t make them bad players but exposes their weaknesses. No great surprise we are looking for LB, LW & GKs. No idea why BR laboured the whole assessment stage. We are still trying to solve for the universal problems we had at the start of June.

Throw in injuries (part bad luck and part BR pattern) and you can understand why the transition looks the relative mess it is, not fully exposed until a decent Euro team exposes it brutally.

I’m talking about a specific problem. You’re getting all James Alexander Gordon on me, in return.

We beat Ross County ergo our wingers are not a problem is tantamount to ‘we beat Barcelona, thon Messi fella’s a diddy’.
