Recruiting players of CCV and Jota quality

245

Last summer Celtic concluded the permanent transfers of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota, both previously on loan at the club, early in the summer, as did free agent Aaron Mooy.  We did not need to contend with selling clubs for any of these deals, as options had already been signed with Tottenham and Benfica.

The only other new contracted player who made any impression on the season was Sead Haksabanovic, he arrived in the final week of the window.

Two years ago, during Ange Postecoglou’s first window, Liel Abada arrived early, Kyogo and Carl Starfelt (only just) joined for the start of the league campaign, and Joe Hart arrived a few days later.  Those we paid transfer fees for that summer came from peripheral markets, not dissimilar to the business we have done this year.

The business carried out in the last two summers was exceptional and exactly what the club needed.  Much of the important work, specifically brining Carter-Vickers and Jota to the club, had to wait until deadline day.

You, me, Brendan, the board and the ballboys know there are gaps in the squad.  Filling them with players of Carter-Vickers and Jota quality is difficult, but that is what Celtic are trying to do right now.  If work like this was easy, others would do it and we would not win so many trophies.

  1. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Good morning CQN

    Terrible weather again.

Maybe we’ll be “signing in the rain”

    Geddit? 🤦

Burnley78 – lovely personal post about Josh Kerr last night.

    Thank you for sharing.

IMHO, stories like his are 80% inspiring, 20% depressing.

For all that we hear spouted about athletic centres of excellence, world class facilities, genuine talent pathways ….

…. with the politicians jumping on the bandwagon at any opportunity

The sad fact for me is … Scottish athletes CANNOT and DO NOT succeed on the world stage in any sport …..

…. unless an intelligent, thoughtful, dedicated, supportive Mammy and/or Daddy drive it.

Often in spite of “the system” rather than because of it.

I meant to say when a certain incident happened in the 51 minute of a certain game in 1979.

    ——————————————————————-

I was 11 years old and tbh while i remember JD being sent off my recollection is of the vitriol of abuse directed at the ref ( things haven’t changed nearly 45 years on). It was more when Russell equalised at 2-2 that the fear of not winning came over me. Step forward Colin Jackson & The Rhino’s howitzer!

  4. Scullybhoy,

Bobby Murdoch is the best player I have witnessed in a Celtic jersey. As Jock Stein said, “when Bobby Murdoch plays, Celtic play”. I have been watching Celtic for the best part of 70 years and have seen the likes of Bobby Collins, Bobby Evans, Paddy Crerand, Charlie Gallagher (my own favourite player) and many, many more great players. For me, Bobby is the best of the very best.

  5. Inter Milan’s coach at the time of the European Cup final, Hellenio Herrrera, described Murdoch as “my complete footballer” after having watched the Celtic midfielder orchestrate the defeat of the defensive-minded Italian side.

And Jock Stein himself said of Murdoch: “As far as I’m concerned Murdoch was just about the best player I had as manager. I only let him move because he had run out of challenges at Celtic.”

    FACTFILE – Bobby Murdoch

    OCTOBER 1959 – SEPTEMBER 1973

    LEAGUE: 291 appearances, 61 goals

LEAGUE CUP: 84 appearances, 17 goals

SCOTTISH CUP: 53 appearances, 13 goals

    EUROPE: 57 appearances, 11 goals

    TOTAL: 485 appearances, 102 goals

    DEBUT: v Hearts, August 11, 1962 (Scored in a 3-1 win)

  6. The Cup was won in 1965 – and from them on, neither Celtic nor Murdoch ever looked back. Bob Kelly had, apparently, once button-holed Stein to ask whether this was the right way to use a man who was, by nature, a forward. Stein’s reply was apparently polite (Kelly was his Boss, after all) but firm. “You’ll see how good a wing half he is!”

  7. I watched the Hibs game last night and have a few observations

-Villa were physically bigger , stronger, fitter na more confident on the ball

-Hibs defended like Hibs do; badly

    – West Ham looked similar vs our half transitioned team in 2021 pre season but we gave them a game until we subbed the top players off

    – the difference is that Celtic have the confidence to play football against these teams and Hibs don’t; Hibs are scared to play football versus us or the huns

    – They should have played a backs to the wall style they do against us

-‘wee’ teams can compete against the ‘big’ English style; Sevilla are a great example, Athletico as well

    – Playing in a top leauge helps the English players develop but i still don’t know why Scottish teams are so less fit and powerful. John McGinn has improved no end since he left Scotland so it can be done

    ====================

Got to agree with Big Jock, Bobby was not half the player he turned out to be when he moved to right half. As an inside forward he had trouble trapping the ball from John Fallons kick outs. Boy!!! Did that change when Jock made Bobby & Bertie his mid field MAESTROS

    Hail Hail

  9. Coneybhoy McGinns legs look twice the size than they did up here …we just play at the physicality side of the game up here ….Greg Taylor after 3 years at celtic should have been built into powerhouse by now …there lies the difference ..

One correction to your post is that Mouldy is not doing the 2017 viftual cycle to Lisbon (that was an actual trip and a half) . He is doing a virtual cycle to Seville which took place in May this year.

Worth re posting in any case as the bhoy deserves support from the troops where folk are able to do so.
