Recruiting players of CCV and Jota quality

245

Last summer Celtic concluded the permanent transfers of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota, both previously on loan at the club, early in the summer, as did free agent Aaron Mooy.  We did not need to contend with selling clubs for any of these deals, as options had already been signed with Tottenham and Benfica.

The only other new contracted player who made any impression on the season was Sead Haksabanovic, he arrived in the final week of the window.

Two years ago, during Ange Postecoglou’s first window, Liel Abada arrived early, Kyogo and Carl Starfelt (only just) joined for the start of the league campaign, and Joe Hart arrived a few days later.  Those we paid transfer fees for that summer came from peripheral markets, not dissimilar to the business we have done this year.

The business carried out in the last two summers was exceptional and exactly what the club needed.  Much of the important work, specifically brining Carter-Vickers and Jota to the club, had to wait until deadline day.

You, me, Brendan, the board and the ballboys know there are gaps in the squad.  Filling them with players of Carter-Vickers and Jota quality is difficult, but that is what Celtic are trying to do right now.  If work like this was easy, others would do it and we would not win so many trophies.

  1. We will see how the Board fans are,on the 1st September, because as it stands, this squad is standing still,if not poorer than last season, going into a CL campaign

Good evening all from Swords, County Dublin.

I hope ye are all hale and hearty. 👍

  3. “Corkcelt:

    Quite simply I enjoy Celtic,”

One would think that was axiomatic but, from some on here , it most certainly does not appear that way.

  4. Anyway I also enjoy Celtic and, with that thought in mind, I shall retire from CQN `till tomorrow.

    `night all.

  5. Hot Smoked

Enjoying Celtic feels like a good place to be.

Our generation has had the best Celtic times ever.

I used to think I would be happy to have won more trophies than the govan team in my life and to get to another European Final …..

We have achieved both of those things and within a couple of years we will have won more trophies than the govan teams combined trophies.

I have loved the past 2 years in terms of how we played. It won’t be easy changing the style as a few posters have said. Wim, MON, GS and Neil all brought us success playing in a pragmatic way.

Who knows what Brendan will bring this time. We are 3 games into it. It’s far too early to call. We are top of the league now and my money would say we will be on September 3rd at full time too and from there until May.

  6. I am genuinely curious why anyone would think that anyone with a financial interest in Celtic would want to take any risks around winning this current season.

We have brought in a proven experienced manager who knows the scene in Glasgow and is not cheap.

We need to win to ensure we are at the top table guaranteeing more and better CL participation next season in the revamped CL.

No one with a vested interest in the club would take any risk on this. Even less so for a paltry short term profit.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Wolves is the club Hatate & his agent are holding out for this window. Man City have agreed a deal for Nunes tonight apparently.

I thought Hatate did well against their midfield in Dublin last month.

Celtic eye £3.5m move for Honduran winger Luis Palma

  9. Luis Palma looks a perfect replacement for Jota.Very similar, left or right, scores goals, assists, and takes a great free kick.

  10. Bada,

Personally,I don’t know of any actual”Board Fans”.Unless you mean the fans that just don’t share the Bogey Man affliction so many have.

    BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 9:26 PM,

Good if we manage to snare even one or two, (hopefully not from England) but they won’t take us out of Pot 4, a good showing in Europa is the baby step we should be taking.

So we should be in the Europa, we should stick to pot 4 ambition, anything else a bonus!?

    Well it makes sense

    Well financially

Well, in a risk averse sense

Easy street, our UCL group stage money is guaranteed this season

    Kerching!!

Sure, by drawing and winning games in the UCL mini league we do get more money and more co-efficient points but we have to invest tens of millions on the team

We may well not receive that money back,

Yet sticking with mediocrity and the moneyball approach means we can be the plucky Celtic Glasgow and wager on future profits

It has been the approach for the last decade and we have seen the domestic trophy cabinet bulge and our money in the bank soar

Yet you still haven’t told me how you want us to do this?

To get into the Europa this season we must come third in the UCL mini league if we are aiming for pot 4 and mediocrity that doesn’t work now, does it?

    Let me digress…

Here’s, financially, what the UCL means for the PLC

We end up 4th, we don’t make any money

We end 3rd, we make a little money on Europa after Christmas

We end up 1st or 2nd, we make a profit, depending on the draw of course but coming higher than third is highly unlikely

Here’s, financially, what the Moneyball means for the PLC

It is hit or miss, but can be much more profitable; it takes the supporters money, invests it in a number of players with “potential high value”

It only needs one or two to make a profit and it looks like the Board are the smartest guys in the business and their big brains have made us lots of spondulicks

Of course it’s like any gambler, Wanyama, VVD, Moussa, Jota romped home – loadsa money

They don’t tell you about the fifty 2 or 3 mn Mo Banguras who fell at the first

Unlike your mug punter of course, they aren’t betting with their own money so it’s a win~win, at least for them

Now back to the point at hand

We have discussed the Europa this season, so next season and for the foreseeable future, the winners of the SPL get into the lucrative new format UCL, there is NO option to drop down to the the Europa or Conference from there

    So no Europa, but wait!!

There is a way, we could come second in the league and then we get into the UCL new format through the qualifiers

We fail in the UCL qualifiers and we drop into the new format Europa, still eight European games, more our current level, more chance of European football after Christmas

Takes away the hard work and expense of trying to compete at UCL level, we still have a domestic old firm ding doing and exciting European football nights

A nice distraction while the real work of the PLC, the moneyball “model” and production line is in full flow

Makes absolute sense if you are a businessman.

But what if you are a Celtic supporter?

    Runners Up!?

What if you remember playing second or third fiddle to Sevco Rangers dead ancestor in the nineties

The sectarian, signing policy of the twentieth century Ibrox

Are we really happy if Sevco Rangers win the league this season and beyond?

Are we really happy seeing them coining in the UCL money to they parity with us?

Yes, I get it, it makes perfect sense if you are a businessman, second to Sevco for a few seasons really works financially.

Yet what happened to the notion, you have to put the best football team you can on the pitch?

That Celtic jerseys are not for second best, they don’t shrink to fit inferior players?

That we don’t need no stinking Rangers”?

    My feelings…

Celtic ambitions are not for second best, they don’t shrink to fit inferior competitions.

    Hail Hail

  13. Celtic are reported to have ‘launched a £3.5m move’ to sign Luis Palma.

The claim comes from the reporter with the most accurate track record on Celtic transfer business- Stephen McGowan.

And the Spanish penalty should have been retaken Earps was a mile off her line when the ball was kicked, how the linesman/woman looking across the line and VAR missed it is unbelievable.

We have made plenty of signings in the last 2 years that Stephen McGowan has not had a clue about beforehand. I would treat the latest rumour with a pinch of salt tbh.

  16. On this day 1973 the break-up of the Lisbon Lions continued. Bobby Murdock leaves for Middlesbrough.

He made 484 appearances for Celtic between 1962 and 1973, scoring 105 goals. He won eight championships, four Scottish cups, five league cups and was Scotland’s player of the year in 1969.

In September 1973, to his dismay, Jock Stein gave him a free transfer to Middlesbrough. “I think Jock wanted more runners in the team,” he said, “but that didn’t really make sense to me, because you can cover the ground a lot faster with a good pass than you can by running.”

Ha! Listen, he could be right with this one, going by the old saying ‘a broken clock is right twice a day’ but i read elsewhere this morning that he’s ‘in the know’ regards Celtic and he really isn’t. He didn’t have a clue about Nawrocki or Lagerbielke for a start, he just jumped on the reports coming out of Poland/Sweden.

When this happened in the 51 minute (1979) did you think all was lost, or did you prefer to dream?

  19. I meant to say when a certain incident happened in the 51 minute of a certain game in 1979.

  20. Tommy Gemmell once told me a story that the Lions were all asked to write the name of the player in their team that they each thought was the best down on a slip of paper and hand it over.

When they looked at the results there was only one name mentioned – Bobby Murdoch. Here are some of the tributes being paid this morning to a player Celtic historian David Potter describes as ‘quite simply the greatest player on earth” at the end of the 1960s…

THE CELTIC STAR 17 August 2021

  21. Celtic’s offer for Luis Palma is reported to be close to the demands of ARIS Thessalonika.

That is the view of Giannis Chorianopoulos who has been a trusted source of news to Celtic fans since Vasilis Barkas came to the club in the summer of 2020 from AEK Athens.
