Red Imps, Celtic, Monaco and Champions League success

328

You will remember Roy Keane getting all up himself after Celtic celebrated Champions League qualification as though it was something important. Roy’s ability to apply perspective isn’t all it should be.

The Champions League presents levels of success. Lincoln Red Imps achieved theirs this season, as did Celtic. As we look forward to the quarter finals, which begin tonight, Monaco are a different type of winner.

In the round of 16, Atletico beat Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus beat Porto, Barcelona beat PSG, Bayern Munich beat the living daylights out of Arsenal, Real Madrid beat Napoli and Leicester beat Sevilla. All these victors, including apparent underdog, Leicester, are richer than the teams they eliminated. Only Monaco, who beat Manchester City, won against the money.

It’s not easy to congratulate tax haven-based millionaires on succeeding despite being relatively impoverished, so we’ll perhaps withhold our joy, but Monaco’s win was the Champions League’s sole instance in the last round of an outcome which was not significantly determined by finance.

What you are unlikely to hear from those happy to disparate Scottish football as an uncompetitive environment, where outcomes are overwhelmingly determined by the richest club’s money, is that our domestic game resembles the elite competition in this very respect.

This is modern football, in fact, it is increasingly elite team sport across the globe. We can get all misty-eyed for days of yore, when 12 different English teams who the league in 14 years, or 11 guys from a 30 mile radius climbed the highest peak, but the future of sport looks entirely different.

You, me and Lincoln Red Imps fans know our level. I suspect we all know where the net ceiling which prevents us moving too high up the food chain lies. We can and should always plot, scheme and dream of bursting free, but knowledge of our place in the game has value. It grounds us in reality, where surely our dreams do not become fantasies?

Remember the Celtic Disabled Supporters’ Association, Dinner Dance, at the Kerrydale Suiteon Friday 21st April.  All are welcome.

After the meal there is entertainment from Foggy Dew, with Jim Craig, Bertie Auld, Tom Boyd and more.  Tickets are £25 each and are available from events@celticdsa.co.uk 07514-059870 (office hours).

Let’s say THANK YOU to the Lisbon Lions!

Could not really give a toss about the rights and wrongs of the big Euro teams,Barca etc. They are all financially doped in some way.To me its about watching,Messi,Neymar,Suarez, weave their magic. The sheer innocent brilliance of Monaco. The fantastic football played by PSG,but as I say,all backed by mega money.Does not stop the entertainment on the field though.

I don’t think we are too far apart; but I cannot condone any government penalising refugees because of “how they got there”; it is, IMHO, immoral.

BMCUWP I wholeheartedly agree; don’t punish the victims of crime.

What is not understood is that people fly in from Sri Lanka , Afghanistan ,Iraq , Iran , Pakistan to Indonesia and pay people traffickers for a boat trip to Oz.

Meanwhile , people languish in camps in Indonesia waiting to have their claims assessed by UNHCR.

The airline ” refugees ” are simply queue jumping .

The Vietnamese boat people in the `70s were escaping the communist ” re-education” camps .

    Now they WERE refugees.

I would hesitate to use the word immoral as opposed dogmatic. I can’t read their hearts and when they say they are doing it with the sanctity of life as their candle then I have to believe them, after all, they are all immigrants themselves.

It can look on here as though some do have an agenda to undermine Celtic at every opportunity. That, though, is the trouble with the written/typed word. Except for the brilliant wordsmiths of the world, sentiment can be either lost or distorted in the non-verbal medium.

I feel that some of the apparent negativity is born of a passion for Celtic to be perfect.

Good luck to Celtic u20s this afternoon at the Oriam Centre against Hibs. It’ll be a tough shift, especially when they see themselves ten points and three games behind Ross County, but where there’s life there’s hope, so give ’em hell.

In that league, County secured another 1-0 victory with a second half penalty against 10-men Aberdeen yesterday. You’d think Jim McIntyre could’ve kept his first team out of the relegation battle by promoting some of those talents.

  11. I know little of Henry Onyekuru but in the photo above the CQN article, he bears a slight facial resemblance to Pele, very slight, actually but enough for me to want Celtic to speculate .

  12. Walking the Devil Dug along the beach this morning, she found a giant inflatable raft, let down obviously, was not there yesterday.Enormous thing, probably could hold about 50 legally. Some more poor souls must have arrived during the night.found a couple of kids life jackets nearby.Last year I took the boat up the coast at the National Park.Saw these people standing on the rocks in a small cove.No way they could go anywhere, not up,not to the sides.Went over closer, around 6 adults and 3 children, one a small baby. They were stranded.I threw them water and sandwiches and called the Marina. They sent out the Coast guard to pick them up.Found out later that the smugglers had told them they were on Samos,Greece, and dumped them there.Bassas.So dangerous where they left them.Easily all drowned.Seeing it 1st hand is not easy.

My litmus test is a simple one…

What would I do if i was in their shoes and I had peoples lives dependent on me.

in the main I side with democracy and the rule of law but sometimes my heart just bleeds and my eyes tear and I wonder how the world can nonchalantly absorb the sufferings of distant strangers and politicians can pontificate heartless platitudes in the name of the majority.

Maybe I take it too close to the heart for my own good but I don’t have to daily suffer the horrors of being stateless, impoverished, hungry and esteemless. I would crush under those tortures.

Presumably taking a boat trip from Indonesia potentially avoids the hassles of not having a Visa .. Last time I went to Australia I had to show my Entry Visa before I was allowed to board the relevant flight In Rome.
