Referee lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour? Watch your back, Celtic

1441

Well done to the Daily Record for revealing that SFA referee, Eddie Smith, was the policeman who reported Celtic fans to Uefa for singing offensive songs against Rennes last month.  Smith was one of the referees who declined to make his services available as referees went on strike last season while Celtic took-on the SFA amid accusations of lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour and cover-ups among referees at the association.  He is no longer on the Grade 1 list.

Following the strike the SFA Head of Referee Administration was removed from his post and referee, Dougie MacDonald, who was accused of lying to Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, resigned, prompting then-Celtic chairman, Dr John Reid, to say the club felt vindicated in raising their concerns.

Vindicated, no doubt, but with more than a few feeling bitter towards the club.

While the Daily Record can reflect on some good work today, bizarrely, the Scotsman newspaper accused Celtic fans of sectarian chanting at the Rennes game, something even police-gossip, Eddie Smith, didn’t accuse them of.

Why stop at accusations of sectarian behaviour?  If the Scotsman are going to be ridiculous, why not accused Celtic fans of genocide and treason?  Better still, just say lots of them have funny names, go to strange schools but will never ascent to the British throne.

Celtic have 123-years of non-sectarian history, it is downright offensive to suggest otherwise.

I know I said I’d meet you and Kit in your favourite haunt,at the beginning of this week. But I’m afraid circumstances prevent me from enjoying both your company until Thursday at the earliest,as Kit is returning to Oz around then,I think the meet up won’t happen for me.I will meet you at another time,in fact I’ll be in Glasgow for the Spanish game,I’ll certainly be having a drink then.

I enjoyed the crack on Saturday, nice to put some names to faces, with my memory I’m meeting new faces every time I go to these meet-ups.

  14. Swiss Tony/Gerry Bhoy and others

Well said. I didn’t intend to get involved, but you can see people on here spoiling for a fight. It’s pretty transparent behaviour.

I always remember that I rarely meet Celtic fans like this. Either a lot of hard men with keyboards or this is non-representative.

I recall meeting a relatively notorious Glasgow club owner who had a hand in some republican activity. He was charming and we were a big group of Celtic fans out for a birthday night out. He bought us drinks and had a laugh, but then started getting a bit serious. Of course we were fine, but equally a little freaked out. Suffice to say no one said a thing to suggest we were all horrified by his extremist views and actions. That was the reality, young Celtic fans who could talk football all night, and this man made it all a bit alien.

We had a good night, mind.

  15. Neil Canamalar

Well, Celtic FC are facing possible action, by the UEFA Disciplinary Committee on December 8, 2011 based on a report by Strathclyde Police. Treat that as lightly as you find it, I am calling it brought to book. It is Celtic FC who face any possible sanctions. Now, I do not know the specifics of the report itself, but whichever we look at it, the reports today, reports that reach far beyond the confines of Radio Clyde, link Celtic with the IRA. I know there is an agenda there just as you do, but that will not make the “charges” go away. I mentioned earlier that the Strathclyde Police appear to be more familiar with the UEFA statutes than with those in place in Scotland, let us ask Glasgow’s finest why that is. We need to do a whole lot more than just assume the report will go nowhere. You have put the accusations in the context of legislation currently before the Scottish Parliament, ie they are linked, but will we be allowed to advance that argument next month? Or any other? I read that we will not be allowed initially, to represent ourselves, if true, we, all of us need to take this seriously. I think I might have said it goes beyond a songs debate, (which we will have anyway), well it certainly could take it to a new level, a European level. My main point is that we, that is us, do not want to come out on the wrong end of a UEFA decision.

    Well ,well what a kerfuffle

All this trouble ,expense and new law making just because the establishment club were told to stop singing 2 songs ,not only that they were only told not to sing them in Euro matches ,domestic matches are not a problem in fact they are publicly praised by the police and politicians in Scotland .

Is it worth all the hassle bhoys .

Would we be as well to just ask UEFA to stop punishing the bigots in blue and just get back to the good auld up to our knees in Fenian blood days .

One thing we should consider with this turn of events and something our fans have to take on board .If as may be likely the ragers will not have to worry about Euro chants for the next 3 yrs so this gives plod 3yrs of tarnishing us with no fear of having to report them .

Unsporting chants ,c’mon bhoys wake up and smell the coffee ,they don’t seem to be able to pin the sectarian badge to us so they go with this pash .Face it bhoys this is just the beginning

I wonder how the support is split on this. How many sing the songs? How many think it should be allowed or stopped and how many just don’t give shake of a lambs tail? We could do one of those on-line votes but I reckon a lot of hunfiltrators would come on to skew the result.

Was it not enough you already talked about “bigots” amongst the Celtic support today, yet failed to justify that description when asked. Maybe you could make something up?

  24. Did Aw Naw really say this?

I have never had this problem on CQN before so it must be how you are communicating.

  25. The taxman, the conviction for sectarianism has brought us this of that there is no doubt, throw in a NL snarl, and an ear cupping or two and voilà!

Three wee Bhoys, and their dug will sing what they choose at Celtic Park, or wherever.

Especially as long as political leaders refuse to even to acknowledge the source of the problem, that has brought this up for perhaps, a welcome debate, and at this stage that’s all it is, debate.

They continue to hide behind, and juxtapose misleading terminology like “sectarianism” “offensive” and now ‘illicit”. Any Celtic song is offensive to them in the same way that some religions, are offensive to others. They cannot solve the equation that Celtic are non sectarian, and as much Protestant as Catholic, in so many ways.

When they’ve done with Ooh ahh, or any tenuous link to politics, will the move on to anything Irish and call it ‘illicit’, isn’t that what the new bill is

    about.

It says everything about the Scottish legal & political establishment that they will invent new rules to persecute Celtic supporters, yet allow and indeed publicly praise 30,000 in unison singing TFS.

A very dangerous road, has been chosen by Strathclyde’s finest what happens after their next inaction?

BOLO ZENDEN reckons Parkhead powerbrokers scuppered his move to Celtic.

The Dutch star was on trial with Neil Lennon’s side last week but, despite impressing the Celtic boss and his coaching staff, he has left the club.

The 35-year-old was expected to pen a contract with the Parkhead side, only to be told hours later that the move was off.

And the former Holland international reckons the decision was taken out of Lennon’s hands after the shock collapse of his Parkhead switch.

Zenden said: “I had a good conversation with assistant coach Alan Thompson and head coach Neil Lennon. They were satisfied we would do a deal.

“When we walked out the office, Lennon said ‘I’ll see you on Monday. Have a few days off and get your stuff’. Then the next day the club decided to scrap the deal.”

With his side currently 12 points adrift of Old Firm rivals Rangers in the race for the Scottish Premier League title, Lennon was keen to add Zenden to his squad for the second half of the campaign.

The former PSG, Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona star was all set to play his part in the Hoops’ championship challenge, but he has been left disappointed.

He added: “I spent two days training and then played a nice game against St Johnstone.

“Only three first-team players were involved and the rest were youth or reserve players, but still we won the game 2-1 which was great for all the younger lads.

“For me the primary concern of the game was to show people that I was fit. I played the 90 minutes fine.”
