Referee lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour? Watch your back, Celtic

1441

Well done to the Daily Record for revealing that SFA referee, Eddie Smith, was the policeman who reported Celtic fans to Uefa for singing offensive songs against Rennes last month.  Smith was one of the referees who declined to make his services available as referees went on strike last season while Celtic took-on the SFA amid accusations of lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour and cover-ups among referees at the association.  He is no longer on the Grade 1 list.

Following the strike the SFA Head of Referee Administration was removed from his post and referee, Dougie MacDonald, who was accused of lying to Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, resigned, prompting then-Celtic chairman, Dr John Reid, to say the club felt vindicated in raising their concerns.

Vindicated, no doubt, but with more than a few feeling bitter towards the club.

While the Daily Record can reflect on some good work today, bizarrely, the Scotsman newspaper accused Celtic fans of sectarian chanting at the Rennes game, something even police-gossip, Eddie Smith, didn’t accuse them of.

Why stop at accusations of sectarian behaviour?  If the Scotsman are going to be ridiculous, why not accused Celtic fans of genocide and treason?  Better still, just say lots of them have funny names, go to strange schools but will never ascent to the British throne.

Celtic have 123-years of non-sectarian history, it is downright offensive to suggest otherwise.

  1. I think something snapped in the psyche of Scotland’s haters of Catholics and the Irish when Neil Lennon “snarled” at sleekit McCoist after the Shame Game.

The establishment team had just put on the most dirty, fouling, cynical display of anti-football ever by a Scottish team and had flagrantly disrespected a referee whose only fault was to have been too lenient on them.

But the haters were transfixed by the image of Neil Lennon shown the next day by the media. They wanted revenge.

Never mind that there was no significant crowd trouble. Something had to be done. Something had to be done about that club with a Catholic Irishman as manager.

The cheating, referee-manhandling players were not punished. Sleekit McCoist was not punished. Only that Catholic Irishman was punished.

But banning him for a few matches was not enough. By playing football in the proper way his team had provoked the establishment team into showing their true colours. And he had snarled. Unforgiveable.

The hurt that was done to the establishment pysche required radical action. A summit. New legislation. Put Timmy in his place. Get the cops to get among them. Leniency for anyone who assaults Raging Lennon. The media can be relied on.

As Lenny said, “This is only the beginning”.

  2. The Good…

Your point about them actively wanting us to continue with such songs is an interesting one.

I attended the FAC meeting on Saturday which you may or may not know was disrupted by around 40 ‘peepil’ walking into the theatre wearing poppies, orange hoodies and one even with a hun tracksuit. Which I found odd as the person in question had participated in Danny Dyer’s programme about football hooliganism in Glasgow and is known to be a leading light in the ICF.

Anyway I digress. It became clear during the constant interruptions that their point seems to be that we, the Celtic support are in fact to blame for this tidal wave of new legislation. They referred to us as ‘snitches’ and ‘grasses’. And that reporting of their sectarian/racist songs was exacerbated by interfering Tims. Someone even made reference to the Villareal team bus having a bottle thrown at it. Apparently that was our fault too.

I left with the impression that they want us to continue with our songs inside football stadium as it will permit them the opportunity to partake in the whatabouttery which they’ve become so adept at.

  4. I don’t think this is a songs debate at all. It’s all about Quis custodiet ipsos custodies – or who’s watching the polis?

A few questions for Mr House:

Do match commanders in Scotland submit reports on crowd behaviour to UEFA as a matter of course?

If so, when did this reporting practice start?

Did UEFA request a police report or was it unsolicited?

Did Strathclyde Police inform Celtic, prior to the match, that it would submit a report to UEFA?

Did Strathclyde Police inform Celtic, after the game, that it had submitted a report to UEFA?

It would seem that some senior policemen are intent on making mischief with Celtic and its support. I hope that’s not true.

  5. Well if the Policeman who reported our support to UEFA is indeed an alleged Celtic fan he joins an ever increasing list of Uncle Tims. In my humble opinion he is no more a Celtic fan than a member of Ibrox LOL 1690 is.

He joins the ranks of alleged Celtic fans who seem to revel in causing us hurt whilst fostering unrest within the support. Judging by the comments made on here by ‘alleged’ Celtic fans over the last couple of days the cult of Uncle tim seems to be gaining momentum and popularity. IE if sections of the crowd sing songs or express an opinion outwith what the Scots establishment deem acceptable there are seemingly many Celtic fans too willing to follow suit and add their condemnation.

Me i’d rather we didn’t sing the party songs but i know if push comes to shove where i will be standing – shoulder to shoulder with the GB.

I’m not so sure it has everything to do with the tax bill. How aware were the politicos of that at the time of the Shame Game? The tax bill may be exacerbating their anger, but I think it comes down to those dark emotions in the Calvinist pysche. Some things go on and on.

“It would seem that some senior policemen are intent on making mischief with Celtic and its support. I hope that’s not true.”

Sadly it does seem to be; how else can you explain the cops going direct to UEFA without informing the club? When, by all accounts, this has never been done before? Also noteworthy that this took place days after the plod were made to look like fools at the Hibs game as well as the FAC demo that same day; hopefully this latest gambit will fail, would be a mighty embarrassment if UEFA told them that there was nothing wrong. Where on earth would it leave their precious bill if the games governing body came to this conclusion?

Amazing to think all this nonsense began because Rangers lost the rag in a cup game and NL and Fat Sally went head to head; makes you wonder just what might have happened if Neil had just stood there and done the Brooney instead (thats no criticism of Neil btw but just cant help feel none of this nonsense would have come to a head but for that); all the while, last season when our manager’s very life was in danger not to mention being attacked at work and players (irish catholic ones no less) were being sent bullets is being quickly forgotten in the rush to criminalize the celtic support; how does criminalizing celtic supporters stop attacks against celtic staff? there’s a question that should be asked in parliament.

I used to be fairly ambivalent towards the snp, thinking they’d left all their past shall we say ‘baggage’ behind them. Now? If this is how they deal with ‘sectarianism’ now I hate to see what will happen if they ever secure independence. I’m one potential yes voter they’ve forever lost over this astonishingly reactionary legislation. For the record I am against IRA chants at celtic; the club has consistently asked people not to do so and they should go; but no amount of lies and misinformation is ever going to convince me that “the celtic symphony” or “boys of the old brigade” are ‘sectarian’; they patently are not.

Apologies for length, I just despair at how events are panning out though maybe I shouldn’t be too surprised.

  23. I’ve lived, luckily, through the war in N.Ireland. It was a war, make no mistake about it. Against the Republican movement was enlisted every singe thing–firepower, manpower, Special Powers act, courts, newpapers, job selection–anything you can think of. We got through it because we took everything they threw at us. Informers, special courts, no-jury trials. Castle Catholics were the hardest to endure. We even had men condemned by the church, and a kow-towing bishop in Daly. We got through it because we wanted equality of esteem, and a right to be heard. We wanted justice for our children and their children. What we have may not be perfect, but by Christ no-one has their boot on my neck. What Celtic are facing is the same. Paul67 is right–watch your backs, and watch your front as well. The Republican movement was infiltrated. What makes you think similar things can’t happen to Celtic?

I have spoken to someone who works for the club and when I asked them what songs were sung she couldn’t name them but said a group of youngsters had added FTP to a song which I assume could only be the Sash.

Don’t think it’s a songs issue nor a free speech issue. (Personally, I could see RA chants far enough.)

But I do think that some establishment figures have got it in for us. They can’t stand the fact that only the Rangers support is seen internationally as an affront to decency. One way or another they are hell-bent on dragging Celtic down to the the same level. To this end they seize on a peripheral issue, grotesquely exaggerate it then demand – Something Must Be Done About Celtic.

  26. Anyone actually think that the debate taking place within both supports can actually be a good thing in the long term for both clubs.

Although both are being dragged kicking and screaming we need sanctions imposed to spike the loonies.
