Well done to the Daily Record for revealing that SFA referee, Eddie Smith, was the policeman who reported Celtic fans to Uefa for singing offensive songs against Rennes last month. Smith was one of the referees who declined to make his services available as referees went on strike last season while Celtic took-on the SFA amid accusations of lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour and cover-ups among referees at the association. He is no longer on the Grade 1 list.
Following the strike the SFA Head of Referee Administration was removed from his post and referee, Dougie MacDonald, who was accused of lying to Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, resigned, prompting then-Celtic chairman, Dr John Reid, to say the club felt vindicated in raising their concerns.
Vindicated, no doubt, but with more than a few feeling bitter towards the club.
While the Daily Record can reflect on some good work today, bizarrely, the Scotsman newspaper accused Celtic fans of sectarian chanting at the Rennes game, something even police-gossip, Eddie Smith, didn’t accuse them of.
Why stop at accusations of sectarian behaviour? If the Scotsman are going to be ridiculous, why not accused Celtic fans of genocide and treason? Better still, just say lots of them have funny names, go to strange schools but will never ascent to the British throne.
Celtic have 123-years of non-sectarian history, it is downright offensive to suggest otherwise.

I think they (the polis and whoever) had planned this in advance of the game . Get Uefa involved .Use a non-proddy cop to make the complaint . Its a blatent stitch-up.

I used to work at Marks and Sparks stacking shelves. Is it appropriate behaviour for someone to blow up my shop as long as they phone in advance, then for Celtic fans to sing a song about it and then to get upset when wider UK society says “that’s not acceptable behaviour”. Sorry mate, that’s bonkers.
On your “bigger bully” point believe it or not I have some sympathy but I’m still failing to see how singing about the retribution is appropriate material for a football game in Scotland.

… puts it more eloquently than me…
As a slight aside, most cringe-worthy moment as a Celtic supporter was on a flight to Amsterdam in 2000 for the Champs League qualifier that pretty much announced Celtic back on the European Stage, the second goal with Larsson neatly playing in Didier Agathe still being one I can see in my mind’s eye. The plane was from London and was about 50/50 business travellers / tourists & Celtic support. So sure enough, some of them (and I use that word as I don’t want to associate myself with it) start giving it laldy with IRA songs. I can still picture the completely and utterly bemused expressions from the rest of the flight. I mean singing about joining the IRA Provisional Wing on a plane?!? Do you think those folk went home and said “those Celtic supporters seemed nice folk” or “I hope they invite them to the Premiership” or “I think I’ll write to UEFA to get these guys an award”, or, “Holy crap, these guys are singing about that mob who regularly planted bombs within a couple of miles of where I live and made me fearful for my life and loved ones?”. Unless you live and breathe Irish politics, which I suspect most citizens of Scotland don’t, the nuances don’t alter the fundamentals of the violence.
Irish singing does our club a lot of good. Songs about the IRA bring it into disrepute.
I was at the Rennes game and was very impressed with the crowd,The singing from the green brigade in the Lisbon Lions Stand, then the answering back from the Jock Stein Stand was as good as it gets, they’ve been singing it for a while but the Rennes game was the best yet,Keep it up.
And all you guy’s that say they heard IRA Chanting are telling porkies, and they all seem to have new blog names, the accusers should really get a life.

“What army? , How was he elected the leader? – remember we do irony the Swiss don’t!”
The Swiss don’t do Irony?? Sure, do they not dress up their army in skirts and make them guard the Pope??
And the Pope has no tank divisions, according to Stalin so where will we get one to park on the marble steps?

your son can understand black and gold army? then all you need to do is read up on the Fianna and explain to your son that an Irishman would take very kindly to a reference that equates him and his folowers to a heroic band of Celtic warriors.

Seriously….. who’s army?
***********************
Its Paddy McCourts army …..
You want to explain the meaning of army……. why not use as an example an army of ants or similar, its a group of people (Celtic supporters) who are supporting Paddy McC, its a groundswell of opinion a veritable army of opinion in fact……. there is no hidden meaning, don’t look for one is my advice.

The polis are positioned right among the GB ,watching them like hawks . If the law was being broken why didnt they act at the time?
I’m just along from their section and can see and hear all.

what an arse you are.
while the hypocrites ra peeple starve the british army of basic survival equipment, you are bleating their propaganda for them, you would do well to focus on the real story of the day, soldiers are currently on active duty without the basics because the hun and their like, are witholding the money needed to protect them, kids a currently dying and being maimed and you have a problem with a few kids sining add ons to songs.
So what is your point ??

your original post stated “folk who plant bombs with the expressed aims to kill civilians” EWO was pointing out that this implication was wrong.and it is, a quick google of any incident will confirm.
I do understand the abhorhence of british people to the singing of IRA chants at football stadia on the island of Britain though.

Maybe we should really give the ragers an offensive rendition of “Ooo Aah Pay Yer Tax, i said Oo Ah Pay yer Tax” – now that would really offend them, the mere thought of paying their taxes! Coupled with a familiar ring ;)

Dyce have always had a decent conveyor line of teams. Their results are probably a mixture of both the strength of league they play in, along with the fact that most of the decent players in that area will opt to play for them as opposed to a so called weaker team. If my memory serves me right, they are usually full of “big uns”
Good luck
PS Nice to see soem Celts on the site tonight!!!!

Vmhan.
I’ve not been posting much these days, but I had to come on and praise the singing at the Rennes Game.
Paranoid post of the day: posters with monikers such as Declan Is Neil Lennon 18 88 et al.
NL wore no 18. 88 is a neo nazi symbol for heil hitler (yes I know Hoops wears no 88 on his shirt but he’s a pro footballer so his knowledge of either history or politics is not likely to be extensive; and, yes, I’m aware that 1888 is year celtic played first game).
These are dangerous times where the 2 phrases: proud to be scottish/proud to be a member of the human race do not comfortably co-exist.
Love Neill Lennon but increasingly ashamed to be associated with the country of my birth!

Dear Superin. E Smith
excellent work my friend. Now you have a taste for snitching on others about nuffin, can I direct you to Tottenham where the chant ‘Yid Army’ can be heard. Complete this task and your Christmas bonus awaits.
Paul – excellent piece. This blog is the voice of the fans, as opposed to some swinging one way then the other QC.

Anyway I have severe back pains now, its been a long time since I was at the gym, running or the likes…… a bit depressing really, if it wasn’t for the auld GB and NL’s Celtic I’d be at my wits end.

The real concern from me is not any banning of IRA songs per se, but more a concern as to where it might lead to next.
Will the police decide they then don’t like Let The People Sing, The Fields of Athenry, This Land is Your Land et al?
The Irish heritage of the club is something to be proud of and cherished. Enemies of the club are seeing this “illicit” song nonsense as a first step on the way to trying to destroy that heritage.
Time for bed.

Nothing strange about it at all.
It didn’t happen, that’s why they didn’t report it.
We have Celtic Supporters from inside the ground to Timbuktu, saying they hear IRA songs sung at Celtic Park ‘every week’
Now that I find strange.
