Relentless pillage of transfer stories wearisome

802

News (confirmed by his club) that our next Champions League opponents Juventus have opened negotiations with Athletic Blibao striker Fernando Llorente, ahead of a possible free-transfer move in the summer, appears to put recent fantasy stories about Gary Hooper supposedly moving to Turin in the correct context.  Liverpool, who several newspapers also ‘reported’ were interested in Hooper, signed a different striker this week.

The relentless pillage of Celtic player’s names used to sell newspapers is wearisome, probably more so to those at the club hoping to convince Hooper, and Victor Wanyama, to sign new contracts.  Chances of re-signing Hooper if he thinks Juventus and Liverpool are about to bid for him: 0%. Chances if it’s relegation battlers from England: considerably higher. I see a new front has been opened today on Beram. We have to ensure another 28 days of this nonsense.

Llorente is a current Spanish international and played a huge part in Atheltic’s march to the Europa League final last season, but I would not be too concerned if Juventus tried to secure him this month.  Moving to Turin is notoriously challenging for strikers and Llorente has never been based outside of the Basque country.

    Izzy,

Keep the faith amigo. I was out of work for a while (my own doing, to be fair) and it was one of the most difficult times of my life, and most depressing. I look back to my lowest points then with dismay as true to the cliché, something was indeed around the corner.

Being out of work affects everything: confidence, hope, faith, relationships, as well as the obvious. It gives us to much time to criticise ourselves. You’d the think the powers that be were using unemployment and/or its threat as a way of keeping us all in our place ! Stay strong!

Congrats on the wee one on the way – looking forward to hearing you tell us of taking the wee one to his/ her first game :))

    Fans on the board.

One of my employees husband is an assistant manager at a club in Scotland.

The club where he works has a board of directors which is fan controlled.

It is being run with a wisdom similar to that of a communist youth club, run by communist youths.

Boardroom chat is leaked in pubs n clubs.

    No business acumen.

    No finance.

Rabble rousing is a daily occurance.

Dermot Desmond and our board are a Godsend.

Fan power is way too overrated .

  3. Mate. Im in construction. A spark.

My fault I suppose for not sticking in at school and having a trade that can be sought from on the cheap elsewhere.

    Hail hail

  4. BMCUW I was being a little flippant but I don’t give much credence to such a sensationalist headline based on such weak foundations. It just doesn’t gel to say it is both widespread an undetected.

But I’ll lay my cards on the table. I don’t trust bookies.

Brian Clough in his autobiography referred to how difficult it is to prove. A great book, which from the style and cadence I’d say he wrote himself.

    Early rise tomorrow.

    Good night all.

Fair predictions imo – but as a point to bear in mind, the SFA already committed, in strong words, to resconstruction to be completed by the end of 2013. The wording, from memory, was a determined matter of fact that’s the way it is typical Dawyll Boardhoof statement.

Even though everyone knows now what a little tinpot hitler IDS is, he’s still there, still intent on mayhem and death.

One of the worst individuals in the country, and that takes some doing. But he’s down there, with the bottom feeders.

Anyone who can deliberately snarl and gesture menacingly on national tv when confronted about his policies being the cause of death for a disabled man really needs the boot.

  7. Andrew 67 – I expect Celtic to be run in a professional commercial manner. I do not expect us to be run by supporters as such. However at this moment in time the supporters completely bankrole the club. We are told (indeed its rammed down our throat) about our mission etc. But then those who run the club do so for the benefit of one man.

    The Board are massive hypocrits.

  8. izzy I suspected as much. A fair few of my family are in the building trade and it’s depressing to listen to what they tell me about rates up the road.

I am not convinced that LNS will find them guilty, but I do expect him too.

    If that makes sense.

Chuck is laying the foundations for civil unrest.

We will see if the SFA have any backbone.

UEFA will pass the buck back to the SFA.

We will see in the next few months.

This is due to trying to save their collective backsides. UEFA wont care as long as all football debts have been settled and there is no chance of possible future legislation. Hopefully an escape route for Celtic or at least an olive branch of participation in a European league will have been secured.

Brian Clough is my favourite non-Celtic football man.

An absolute legend, which sadly petered out.

He may well not have been the nicest person in the world, but he knew the game, and was second-to-none in motivating people.

And remember, only a couple of years before he ground to a halt,he spotted Roy Keane in a meaningless friendly, signed him,and put him in the first-team.

    Anyway,off to work…

  13. The ‘still the same club’ argument is for the deluded, those in denial; denial wiped Rangers out of course, and it might do Sevco yet. I see it like an old auntie dying, attending the funeral and then, going back to her house, finding that some other old biddie has acquired the house, is wearing her clothes and sitting in her chair. Then you find some cousins are all persuaded that she is indeed the same old auntie after all, and will not be persuaded diffferent. A bit like the main character in psycho, you can’t tell them different, they deny it, you just have to make sure you don’t start believing it yourself, ever!

“Now I know this information will not be enough for you and your ilk”

I have no ilk but the information is welcome, since I asked for it, though, of course, it is insufficient, on which to base a final definitive judgement.

The amounts quoted, £3m and £1.5m, are significant amounts. Between them, we could have bought, but not paid the salary of, another Scott Brown or Gravesen, with that.

However, I would still need to know if these were typical payouts or, indeed, if they were the only payouts we made over the past decade, which would cast a different light on the matter. If we knew the average yearly loss to dividend payments we could evaluate its impact better, don’t you think?

We always seem to end up in the place where we are criticising Dermot Desmond’s financial stewardship on the basis of guessing his future behaviour, which takes us away from the realms of evidence into supposition.

What if Celtic make it into a more favourable financial league, EPL or other, but he did not sell up? Would that make his current financial stewardship any more or less worthy of criticism?

What if, like Fergus, he made a profit and we gained too by reaching the competitive level where we could earn TV money commensurate with our status as a well supported club? Would that not be a win:win as it is now seen to have been, in retrospect with Fergus’s much criticised reign?

Would you agree that, currently, Fergus, even with the 2 payouts you cited, and, of course, Dermot took only a proportion of that £4.5m, he would have earned more on his investment by placing it in other places rather than within Celtic plc (speculative future gains via EPL excepted)?

firstly you can expect that the dividend payments would continue around the level noted in the information I gave you.

Fergus was very honest about what he was doing and he did so to the letter. I have no issue with that and it was win win.

DD is not at all honest in his intentions – he leeches off the support and then criticises us. He tells us he misses Rangers. He has made an astute investment in Celtic – if we get into the EPL he will sell immediately and make a massive profit. Its his modus operendi – see London City Airport for evidence.

As for whether Celtic in EPL is win win – well perhaps – but right now we are being asked to buy season tickets at £600 quid, watch rubbish and be exploited for every penny. meanwhile the club will allow us to be harrassed, criminalised, criticised and cheated.

Surely if SPL strip the Zombies of titles and SFA strip them of cups while imposing a must pay fine before re-entry to the top tier of Scottish Association Football then this will also open the Zombies/SFA/SPL up to possible litigation from your everyday punter who paid in good faith going through the turnstiles of Scottish football.

If the day ever comes that Dermot Desmond sells for a big fat profit.

It is highly likely that all other shareholders will have the opportunity to cash in and share a proportionate benefit of his gain.

He has risked his money , he would be entitled to reap the reward .

So, that would mean around £2.25m has been leaving Celtic every year since Dermot bought in as major shareholder? You will stand by that statement?

You base your certainty in DD selling his Celtic shares on the basis that this is what he did with his London airport shares? Do you happen to know if he has any shares that remain in his possession from the original time of purchase up to today? If so, we could, with equal validity, speculate that he would treat Celtic shares in the same manner.

I am not saying you are wrong, just that you cannot know that you are right.
