Ronaldo, Ali and the pantomime act

441

I read critical comments on Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments after Iceland had the temerity to take a point from Portugal last night and recalled some of the heartfelt and genuine affection expressed last week for Muhammad Ali.

“Graceless”, “disrespectful” and “unsporting” was the general tone, which is pretty much what was levelled at Muhamad when he called Joe Frazier an “Uncle Tom”, surely the pinnacle of a career sending disrespectful barbs towards opponents.

I could listen to and watch Muhammad all day long, he was forever a treat to sport and the world, but had he shut his mouth and JUST boxed only actual boxing fans would know his name now.

Ronaldo sounds like he’s taken lessons from The Greatest. At first pass it doesn’t look like it, but when he reacts churlishly after a disappointment, he helps make football a bigger sport, just as Ali did for boxing. And just like Ali, many will want Ronaldo and Portugal to lose, just to take the smug grin off his face. That’s why sport engages so many, but if you loved Ali, be consistent and cheer on Ronnie.

I’ve read and enjoyed some of what this pantomime act they’ve signed across the city has been saying this month. Good luck to him, he’s sheer entertainment. Anyone who can give it thick to royalty, mix with certain councillors, shout for Celtic, then tell Newco to cheer for him as he takes millions from them, deserves some slack.

  1. I liked RD as a man, I gave him the benefit of the doubt in the first season. I wonder how he feels now that he is away from the intensity. He must surely still be keeping an eye on the comings and goings at Celtic.

When Cole is released and Kazim-Richards let go (and no doubt more to come) does he sit and say ‘why on earth did I sign them’?

    Or, did he sign them?

Oh aye, this is the same ‘reasoning that allows the huns to justify their peodo stuff. No sympathy with the victims, but allows them to taint their enemies with awful incidentsinvolving a minority of their number.

I usually try to scroll past your posts because no matter how you dress it up or try and intellectualise it, you’re a sad racist bigot. I realise this post is exactly the attention you crave so back to scrolling past.

Yep. I really need lessons in eclecticism from you.

  4. Subsequent events e.g. the almost total collapse of revenues from the North Sea Oil & Gas industry, clearly illustrated how we ‘dodged a bullet’ in the Scottish Referendum, by making the sensible decision to stay within the UK.

Let’s hope we dodge an even bigger one this time next week, by voting tp remain a member of the EU.

This is the clearest and best thing I’ve read about the EU referendum. Worth five minutes of anyone’s time.

Would you say the sensible decision for the UK workers paid off from Rosyth to accommodate Polish and Romanian tradesmen would be to vote to remain ?

I come onto this blog for my morning dose of all things Celtic but seemed to logged on to Question Time on steroids today.Im sure most people on here are clever enough to make up there own minds on the upcoming referendum it would be good if we could maybe get back to all things Celtic related.Please.

Yes, Barton was signed up for TV3 before his hologram appeared in Govan.

I believe he is doing a bit of match punditry tomorrow.

Probably TV3’s attempt to out Dunphy Dunphy.

Kev…Sir not too often i agree (i do sometimes)with you but i enjoy reading your posts at least they are Celtic related.Thank you

  12. If I was Brendan…..I’d stick as close as possible to the 7-0 v Big McGhee’s Motherwell side that, Ronny put onto the Celtic Park pitch on that memorable day.

    Why change it ?

Who will we fear domestically ?

Connor Sammon(sp) is at Hearts and, might turn out to be a shrewdy signing ?

If money dizny come into the huns, they’ll be relegated or, rather….the leagues will be restructured to keep them up.

The CLQ’s have to be cutely handled.

    Anyway……

I hope all the fans going to the fitba today have good time and are safe.

All the fans watching on tv – hope yeez enjoy.

  15. A bit overcast in London today and the chaps next door in Whitehall are a tad nervous about Brexit.

What is it with the Ibrox club and attracting criminals from the chairman to the latest recruit. US is very strict on entry requirements for criminals , terrorists and out and lunatics. So as well as Barton not making the US trip Neither will their criminal chairman.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see their next sponsor as Her Majesty’s Prisons. The HMP XI has a ring to it and probably explains the portrait in the dressing room.

  19. Morning all. Nags. Turn away now or risk losing your hard earned:-)

Was waiting on this info all week, but having received it now, it’s littered with ifs and buts so it really is a risky bet.

    Anyhow.:

Point of View. Last race at Ascot. In Vg health and they were confident of a big run at a big price. There are now a couple of issues:

    1. Drawn very poorly

    2. Likes to force the pace a bit but could struggle to get a decent position

Instruction to Atzeni will be to see where he manages to get the horse early doors and play it by ear. Likelihood is he will need to tuck in hopefully somewhere near the pace and hope for a run.

12:1 in betting and if you can afford to lose your money, perhaps an each way bet will get you a return. We’ll undoubtedly need things to fall right though. You’ll no doubt have some idea of your fate after 2 furlongs.

    Good luck if you play

The consensus of informed opinion is that a post Brexit Britain that wanted to trade with the EU would have to accept free movement of labour.

So anyone being persuaded to vote to leave by being told it will stop migrant labour is being lied to.

It’s a bit like the independence referendum.

To be fair, when it comes to signing players without a club (Oliver Kapo is another example) the club tends to favor pay per play deals or deals with a break clause.

They were low-level risks meant to provide cover for Leigh in the short term.

The true failures are the likes of Pukki, Balde, Ciftci etc. Guys we were prepared to hand over a fee for and hand a proper contract.
