Ronaldo, Ali and the pantomime act

441

I read critical comments on Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments after Iceland had the temerity to take a point from Portugal last night and recalled some of the heartfelt and genuine affection expressed last week for Muhammad Ali.

“Graceless”, “disrespectful” and “unsporting” was the general tone, which is pretty much what was levelled at Muhamad when he called Joe Frazier an “Uncle Tom”, surely the pinnacle of a career sending disrespectful barbs towards opponents.

I could listen to and watch Muhammad all day long, he was forever a treat to sport and the world, but had he shut his mouth and JUST boxed only actual boxing fans would know his name now.

Ronaldo sounds like he’s taken lessons from The Greatest. At first pass it doesn’t look like it, but when he reacts churlishly after a disappointment, he helps make football a bigger sport, just as Ali did for boxing. And just like Ali, many will want Ronaldo and Portugal to lose, just to take the smug grin off his face. That’s why sport engages so many, but if you loved Ali, be consistent and cheer on Ronnie.

I’ve read and enjoyed some of what this pantomime act they’ve signed across the city has been saying this month. Good luck to him, he’s sheer entertainment. Anyone who can give it thick to royalty, mix with certain councillors, shout for Celtic, then tell Newco to cheer for him as he takes millions from them, deserves some slack.

I think in fairness describing English Football Hooligans as “animals” is not necessarily a racist jibe

They are behaving like beasts as is their wont, though it now appears that the Russians thugs have out yobbed them.

If Irish fans behaved like that I would describe them as animals also.

In general though Irish football fans at major tournaments dont behave like that, they drink a lot and sing and dance and are generally good humoured.

That doesnt make the Irish as a race any better of worse than the English as a race. All races have good and bad with the majority being, thankfully, decent people who simply want to enjoy their lives and do no harm to anyone.

Anyway..I hope you are well..Brexit me arse

Just saw this on Wiki. Clint Hill is older than is being reported. I thought I recognised the name.

Clinton J. “Clint” Hill (born January 4, 1932) is a former United States Secret Service agent who was in the presidential motorcade during the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.

During the assassination Hill ran from the car immediately behind the presidential limousine, leaped on to the back of it and shielded Mrs. Kennedy and the already stricken president with his body as the car raced to Parkland Memorial Hospital. This action was documented in the Zapruder film. Hill is the last surviving passenger of the presidential limousine which arrived at Parkland Hospital.

Perhaps more drunks than animals .

I don`t really mind , mate , as long as there is no double standard.

    Just read back,

Thanks Mats Nilloc, for the reply earlier, that makes sense.

Re Joey Barton working for TV3 in Ireland tomorrow. In fairness that was organised before he committed to the Sacred Trust (as far as I know). TV3 are now owned by Liberty Global, a multi-national.

Thankfully, Joey is on after the match in the magazine type show (Soccer AM type stuff).

The actual match coverage has been good and well presented, imo.

Graeme Souness is in the studio so plenty of “he’s a proper player.” “At this level.” “You need to be right at it.”etc.

I see Mr MacJay has spotted an Irish Tricolour among rioters in Lille. If there is one he’s lost as Ireland’s next game is Bordeaux, 800km away.

Your basic refusal to call the man by his real name speaks volumes.

I did not launch an attack on you and I did not call foul on anything.

I merely made a comment on your post to which you called me an ignoramus and/or member of the PC brigade. The only way I’m a member of a PC brigade is because I’m posting on one right now.

Nobody brought up racism but you, nor the ghost of Kojo the great defender of civil rights.

And as I said earlier if you want to post controversial points on a public forum be prepared for someone to take issue with it. If that constitutes bullying then you must have led a very sheltered life.

    Why diversity?

Bring a wee bit of yer so-called diversity to places like Pakistan and Bangladesh sure, why not?

  16. We will not Brexit – it will be closer than anyone had ever thought due to the hysteria over immigration.

Yes of course immigration has to be managed , otherwise we could have whole swathes of the population swishing around Europe like water in the bottom of an unstable goldfish bowl.

We are not the USA – countries are not bound together in a federal system.

The ideal is of course for all EU members to have harmonised wages and social conditions, negating the need for economic migration – that is a long way off, and until then we must handle immigration in a fair and humane way, for both immigrants and the indigenous population.

Brexit’s argument seems very similar to the defeated Nationalist case in the Scottish Referendum, i.e. “it will be allright on the night and we will make it up as we go along”

Without long and carefully managed rehersals, it is never “allright on the night” and in this complex and interconnected world, “making it up as we go along” is a recipe for disaster.

Vote IN – only real sensible choice.

I recall a conversation with a pensioner in a bar few years ago.

“I’ve always loved boxing son. To me the greatest fighter was Cassius Clay! Im not calling him Muhammed Ali as I don’t agree with all this change your name for religion nonsense.”

So it’s not Pope Benedict its Cardinal Ratzinger I ask him.

    “No no its Pope Benedict”

But I thought you don’t agree with changing your name for religion I ask him.

” Ah well you see,,I mean,,its kinda different,, he had to change his name”

No he didnt he coulda been Pope Joseph.

“Aye but you know what I mean don’t ya?”

No idea sir but I do know double standards when I see them. You can’t have it both ways.

Cue a rant about young ones these days.

Ive just spent three and a half hours watching the directors cut of das boot. If there’s ever a better submarine movie I’ll eat my hat. No idea if it won any awards but imo it deserved them all that year (1981). Soundtrack was spot on also.

Can anyone confirm the submarine was invented by an Irishman?
