Ronaldo, Ali and the pantomime act

441

I read critical comments on Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments after Iceland had the temerity to take a point from Portugal last night and recalled some of the heartfelt and genuine affection expressed last week for Muhammad Ali.

“Graceless”, “disrespectful” and “unsporting” was the general tone, which is pretty much what was levelled at Muhamad when he called Joe Frazier an “Uncle Tom”, surely the pinnacle of a career sending disrespectful barbs towards opponents.

I could listen to and watch Muhammad all day long, he was forever a treat to sport and the world, but had he shut his mouth and JUST boxed only actual boxing fans would know his name now.

Ronaldo sounds like he’s taken lessons from The Greatest. At first pass it doesn’t look like it, but when he reacts churlishly after a disappointment, he helps make football a bigger sport, just as Ali did for boxing. And just like Ali, many will want Ronaldo and Portugal to lose, just to take the smug grin off his face. That’s why sport engages so many, but if you loved Ali, be consistent and cheer on Ronnie.

I’ve read and enjoyed some of what this pantomime act they’ve signed across the city has been saying this month. Good luck to him, he’s sheer entertainment. Anyone who can give it thick to royalty, mix with certain councillors, shout for Celtic, then tell Newco to cheer for him as he takes millions from them, deserves some slack.

There is a big difference and you are deliberately taking it out of context, refugee and migrant are distinct and different. There is also the point that the refugees were not, at the time foreign nationals although they were portrayed to be by those intent on division. Nor did their exodus appear to be deliberate ploy to undermine the local labour force. Again those who sought division portrayed it as such.

50 shades….yeah that’s a good call Rooney and Hayes of Aberdeen have been excellent over the last year or two.It would be great if we could bring in a striker that would get the fans excited a Jorge Cadette type would be great.Like yourself i’m trying to be realistic but it would be fabulous to get a top striker in to really give the place lift off

    Strikers

Don’t normally advocate players that have left the club returning, but I think Hooper would be available and affordable. He has proved he can score in Scotland, and was beginning to get the hang of Europe when he left.

Going to England will have scratched an itch he had regarding possible selection for the National team, and I think he could be a better player after his trials down south.

If we are going to carry on punting £2m in the hope of unearthing a striker, we could do worse.

STs are sold. No need for quality striker nonsense.

  5. Brexit? No thanks that’s all wee Nicola is looking for as an excuse for the next “neverendum” where despite the fact that Scotland would be neck deep in shit by now financially with a squillion McPound deficit if we had voted Yes, she will continue with her one policy diatribe.

  6. Agree with those praising Rooney and Hayes but I would like them to stay with Aberdeen. I like having Aberdeen as our main rivals and want it to stay that way.

You Norway and Swiss figures appear to back up the contention that they bring in migrants as and when needed and not for any insidious reasons like undermining the native workforce. Rates do not drop nor are they used to create conflict.

  9. I’m not suggesting that Wales have anything better than a fighting chance today. However, 6/1 looks to be a tad generous and therefore irresistible for this Bhoy.

Zlatan spotted anxiously checking his phone every 5 minutes while muttering “feck this, I’m jetting out to Glasgow as soon as we’re knocked out this competition.”

Joseph ‘magnifique’ Barton was unavailable for comment, leading to concern.

  14. Big Mouth, Poet. Philosopher. Football Analyst,Linguist & average footballer wee joey barton I see is being left behind due to past misdemeanors

JOEY BARTON is set to MISS Rangers’ pre-season trip to the USA.

Sevco say the 33-year-old has been given extra time off after his Championship title win with Burnley.

His name was not on a visa squad list forwarded to the US Embassy by the club, SunSport understands.

Barton set to miss pre-season tour of USA News Group Newspapers Ltd

However, he was not certain to be allowed into the States as he has a criminal record and was denied entry for a similar trip with Newcastle.

But Rangers look to have avoided the problem by leaving Barton at home when they head to the US on June 27.

Cmon mate its the close season we are allowed to dream. :-)

Anyway Brendans got it covered, 2 strikers in a winger that has more than one trick a right back (maybe) and a central defender that can head a f’n ball out the danger zone.

That takes care of 2 million now just 13 left to spend on deadline day :-)

  18. If there was an Irishman in amongst the Brits and various other Nationalities sporting an Irish Tri-Colour, he could be classed as exceptionally brave or exceptionally stupid. Whether or which there is absolutely no evidence that he misbehaved, running away from a riot scene is what good citizens do.

Regarding English fans behaviour, I have no doubt that the majority are well behaved but there is a yobbish National Front element, who set out to cause trouble. They met their match against the Russian yobs, but I took no pleasure in that. I abhor all forms of Football Hooliganism,

I am extremely proud of the record of both Celtic & Irish fans over the years but am not blind to fact that we also have a few bad apples in our midst.

A Celtic shirt doesn’t shrink to fit inferior players…. or stretch THAT much to allow for comfort without serious risk of tearing.

Nothing against the big guy himself, but that was a strange signing. Surely he wasn’t employed to actually play football. I’ve got high hopes of Celtic only signing players who are good enough to play for the starting 11 (or at least within a few months of settling). I do think Brendan will be backed financially…. oops, I almost spilled my half-full glass of Optimism Juice there.

Tomorrow could be key day when time runs out on re-locating to Section 416. I suspect an outbreak of dots following this event.

However someone is micro managing the dot situation at Celtic, the magic figure is around 40 when dots drop to that level, a new few rows suddenly become available.
