Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

Go back to Celtic v Spartak Moscow in the final CL qualifying game in August 2007…it’s penalties….guess who is the man who takes that first one …..striding forward like a man on a mission to stop me biting my nails before I reached my elbows….a feckin rock…..look at his face ……what a penalty…what a man…what a night…Thanks Gary!

Football is a ruthless business especially in this part of the world, and it goes without saying that results and performances haven’t been good enough.

Today will have been a tough one for Ronny and his family. My heart goes out to him. He loves Celtic and gave everything he could so can leave with his head held high. He has been hung out to dry in many respects. He deserved better than others signing players who are not up to it. He deserved better than being partnered with Collins and John Kennedy. He deserved better than having to face the horrible SMSM every week.

    God bless the man.

Ah mean, he’s walked away as a £millionaire.

Why is it a sin for him ?

    Dear, dear….

  7. The club’s ambition?

We could have been forgiven, at the time, for thinking the Maribor reverse was just one of those results that can happen. You suck it up and move on. You learn from the mistakes made, and prepare better for the following campaign.

Prior to that season, Peter Lawell’s transfer dealings had been more or less neutral. Following Seville we released 14 players and only brought one in that season. Stephen Pearson. The 14 released were fringe players on the whole, with the notable exceptions of Henk and Liam Miller, but both of those expressed a strong desire to leave.

Between then and Maribor, we stayed fairly neutral in our transfer dealings. Yes, some good players went, some good players came in. Naka, Magic, Boruc , Brown, Skippy for example, we’re all good additions.

We were in competition v an over spending Sevco, and drew some mighty opponents in Europe. To this point we are doing well, and Peter Lawell should take great credit for his part in us getting to the last 16 v Milan, and giving us some memorable nights in Europe. League success was also evident, and again, the comeback to win the title at Tannadice ( Tommy Burns title) was fantastic.

All was good, not all conquering, but we were making an impact in Europe. We were definitely a top 32 European side, and our reputation was that of being the club no one wanted to take on at Celtic Park.

Amongst the heroes of that period, and there were many, I believe Peter Lawell deserves a mention. Keeping the books balanced, quality in replacing quality out, full grounds for memorable European nights and titles being racked up on what we now know was an uneven playing field.

    The strategy then changed.

From Maribor onwards, we have continually sold our best quality. £43 m brought in on transfer fees v £12.4m spent.

    A net gain of £31.1m.

That profit has been used to balance the books at the expense of dropping European revenue allied to slowly, but surely, diminishing income from season book sales and match day revenue. As lethargy sets in, and more people lose interest, incentives such as £100 reduction on season books are introduced as a means to get more punters back through the gates.

In parallel though, your assets are reducing, the quality is diminishing and at some point, you arrive at a situation whereby you have less to sell and less to buy with.

As much as we can credit Peter with the successes of the period between Seville and Maribor, he must take the responsibility for the current situation.

Is it too late for him? We are clamouring to get rid, myself included, but actually, with a return to the strategy of his earlier period of success, and support from DD, which will mean finance, and the backing of the support, it’s not to late in my opinion for us to get back into Europe.

The defeat on Sunday HAS served a purpose by bringing the current situation into sharp focus.

A continuation of current policy and Peter Lawell is on borrowed time. As I say though, it’s NOT too late.

We are undoubtedly better positioned than our only rivals. Let’s get a coherent plan together to keep it that way.

  8. Whoever gets the Celtic managers job shouldn’t need much money to spend….imho

I have no idea who’ll take the job with Lawwell still on the premises.

    I mean, 40 / 50 players recruited in the last, 4 / 5 years, to win a one horse league ?

    Naaaaahhhh, am no buying it.

All of these players were brought to the club because, it suited Lawwell.

Why did it suit him ?

Was it because of his cut from all the foreign agents involved ?

Ye see, whilst all the jelly and ice cream gluttons were, looking the other way…

…Lawwell was feathering his nest, from Celtic supporters money.

    That is not on.

But,….again, on a rudderless ship it’ll go unchallenged.

    Why wasn’t it challenged ?

How many hauns were in the Celtic cookie jar ?

    Ronny has gone….so what ?

The evil at the heart of the club is still there and, will probably be already diminishing the quality of the product in the dug out that we’re likely to attract.

Lawwell, and others….have to be gotten rid of or else, Celtic FC is just a dog chasing it’s tail.

    Manager’s talk to each other.

The creators of the rudderless ship at Celtic FC, will probably not get they’re season book renewal forms through the door till it is ‘safe’ with the SPFL title in the bag.

Can ye imagine receiving yer season book renewal form through the door as, Ronny’s Roasters blow the league ?

    Don’t rule it out!

Yes that’s right….you….create the rudderless ship by, ploughing all yer money into the divvy-up-pot.

If it’s not….you….who create’s the rudderless ship – prove it!

If….you….don’t change,…..Celtic will die in front of yer eyes.

    Now,….who want’s that on they’re conscience ?

    FWIW…..whoever get’s the manager job….

    Mark McGhee

    Roy Keane

    Jim McIntyre

    Gary Caldwell

    Peter Houston

…buy ‘only’ 3 players and work with what players are still at Celtic and, of course still out on loan.

    The 3 players to buy…..

Stephen McGinn – Dundee right back

John McGinn – Hibs midfield(new Murdo)

    Niall McGinn – Aberdeen striker.

Any of the above managers could mould a guid Cellic team out of what is available just now,

    plus….the 3 McGinn’s….imho.

  18. Bankiebhoy, good morning.

with the greatest of respect, opinion on this blog will not, and cannot de-stabilise Celtic. Its a microscopic representation of Celtic fans’ opinion.

What de-stabilises a club is weak financials borne out of poor strategy, and it will not only de-stabilise it, it could ultimately kill it as a competitive entity in the market place which offers it the best opportunity to succeed. Europe.

In the case of the late RFC, it was overspending creating massive debt accumulation.

Weakening financials at Celtic, is arguably due to an unsuccessful strategy which is reducing our access to greater revenue.

Press reports, media BS? Well yes it can negatively impact on support, but only the weak minded who cannot think for themselves. Celtic fans I would suggest, on the whole, can determine for themselves what they feel about the way the club is operating.

Celtic should be able to defend themselves against any unfounded negativity, and in the case of bare faced lying, should be able to seek legal redress if it able to be proven as lies.

I think the Celtic fanbase is what will see the club climb back towards the top 32 in Europe, assuming the club display a level of ambition to take us there.

I feel comments from CP that the SPL is the problem, or intimations that we should accept our geographical disadvantage will see us as Euro also rans, does much more to destabilise us than anything you’ll read on here or in the Daily Record.

If we all buy into this “European participation is a bonus”, Celtic in 10 years time will be unrecognisable from the club that was once at the forefront of European football.

Mickbhoy, you raise a legitimate concern that I chose to wait until it was raised by others. The keyword of course is alleged. However what is not in doubt is his list of partners and his use of injunctions. We repeatedly hear on this blog about we have lost our original ethos that Brother Walfred initially envisaged. Well his behaviour in purely this regard does not meet the standards required to manage Celtic Football club.

Ryan Giggs will never be acceptable to a family club. Is NFL.?

I backed NFL to the hilt When he was our manager. His treatment in Scotland was absolutely abysmal, but this is our chance of a new beginning.

Was Malky McKay’s behaviour so much worse than NFL’s . Allegedly.

Didn’t mean to steal your thunder!

Bankiebhoy, I’ve noticed there have been at least a couple of blog identities on here posting strong comments to the effect that posting comments on a blog is a waste of time! Even when it’s been pointed out to them. Profit and Loss seems to be the only language that some people at Celtic Park understand, unfortunately. I think that Celtic supporters may soon start ‘talking’ to them in larger numbers, if the apathy and disaffection isn’t truly addressed.

  25. I have posted this before on CQN in response to the cry that we “need a big name experienced manager with lots of prior Euro experience” and the cries of “why don’t we just ask Hiddink/ Mourinho etc; cos ye never know?”. I don’t know how such expectations arise in the Celtic support as it has never been part of our history or practice to go for big established names. We only ever paid to recruit two managers and they were the unsuccessful Tommy Burns and Tony Mowbray.

In my view, if even middle-sized names like Moyes, Lambert or even McKay come to CP it will be as part of their rehabilitation process, to get them back to being employed as coaches in a much much more lucrative league. In short, they will arrive with Wanyama/Van Dijk type expectations, even though they did once play for us (I don’t think we were the boyhood club of any of these three). In contrast, Roy Keane, would probably show more loyalty, unless Man U came calling but he might be a revolution too far for all of us. I cannot be sniffy about the likes of Steve Evans or John Hughes as, though I may not want them for the job, I cannot state that experienced semi-successful club managers are atypical appointments for Celtic.

Anyway, as I’m off into work, here is the post I regularly make about the history of “big-name” Celtic managerial appointments:-

“The narrative seems to be it was a mistake to appoint Ronnie, a rookie manager to a post like Celtic which demands an experienced hand. How far does that live up to any cursory evidence.

Ronnie is a rookie despite one years managing in Norway’s lower divisions, two years as an asst. coach in the top division and 6 years managing in their top division. He won them a cup (their 5th) and league (their 2nd) in a 108 year history. He had European experience of playing Atletico Madrid in a Europa qualifying tie in 2011. He managed them in 2 further Europa qualifiers in 2013, beating Debrecen of Hungary and losing to Czech side Jablonec. He would have had CL qualifying management experience if he had not come to Celtic when Stromgodset qualified for that stage.

How does that compare with Celtic managers

Willie Maley- First managerial post with no prior experience (European experience was not an option)

Jimmy McStay- 2nd post- had two years with Alloa, one of them in the 2nd division

Jimmy McGrory- 9 years managing Killie during the war when no league took place. Took them to a losing cup final before WW2. Took him 9 years to win a league with Celtic and 5 years to win a cup.

Jock Stein- 4 years with Dunfermline and one year with Hibs. Jock had 2 years European experience with the Pars

Billy McNeill- one year with Clyde and one year with Aberdeen. Billy had one European tie with the Dons which he lost

David Hay- 1 year with Motherwell, winning the 2nd div. No priorEuropean management experience

Billy McNeill again- 10 years now in Management- had Euro experience from his first spell at Celtic

Liam Brady- First managerial post- no prior experience at all

Lou Macari- 9 years in management- all in the lower leagues of England. No Euro experience

Tommy Burns- 2 years with Killie, only one in the top division. No Euro experience

Wim Jansen- 15 years in management, 8 were as asst. or Technical director. He won 2 Dutch cups with Feyenoord so did have Euro experience- almost took them to a Final

Jo Venglos- 32 years experience but only ever won 2 Czech leagues in 74 and 75- suspect he had some Euro tie experience

John Barnes- Rookie manager all round- no Euro experience

Kenny Dalglish- 15 years in management- plenty Euro experience

MON- 13 years in management, 4 in the top division winning 2 league cups- minimal Euro experience

WGS- 9 years in management, one years experience of Europe with Southampton- lost his 1st tie

Tony Mowbray- 7 years in management- only Euro experience came in 2 UEFA campaigns with Hibs- both falling at the first hurdle

Neil Lennon- rookie manager- no Euro experience

So, by my reckoning, Ronny has had more prior club managerial experience than all bar Billy McNeill (2nd time around), Lou Macari-(all lower league), Wim Jansen, Jo Venglos, Kenny Dalglish, MON and WGS. He ranks 8th out of 18 managers in prior club experience.

Only Jock, Billy McNeill (2nd time around), Wim, and Kenny had more prior Euro experience. Of the 17 managers who could have had Euro experience, he ranks 5th.

So where did all this rookie nonsense- we usually employ experienced managers with Euro experience- actually come from?”

  26. Bankiebhoy

The countdown is on course and hopefully won’t be derailed!

Re the MSM I admit I find them an irritant but perhaps it’s conditioning over a long number of years but I tend to dismiss them rather more easily than I used to. I started out on the supporters bus at 8 years old (1966) and used to hear the men on the bus talking about the press and the referees back then. Didn’t stop us mind ye. From memory we had quite a good season the following year:-)

Modern day media? Different era same crap. If they were influential to any degree, the late RFC would have been European champions intermittently and Scottish champions eternally. Why, even when the shoelaces of RFC caught fire ( just before their bus did) , the MSM continued to fiddle, and did so even when the flames were licking around their brass necks. We weren’t buying it though, and it was only when they had the dustpan and shovel out to sweep up the ashes, that they finally told us what we already knew.?They died. Since reincarnated in the eyes of the press, but we know they died.

Point being, they can spin whatever they want as often as they want, but anyone with an ability to form an opinion based on what they’re seeing, won’t be fooled by an imbecile with both a keyboard and an agenda.

  27. Dharma – the darker arts of influence –

Of course there is apathy and disaffection – I think there always will be and there always has been. The way malign influence can work is by focusing on fomenting the apathy and disaffection. They don’t have to invent the issue at hand – but they do have to make it that bit worse, consistently.

    Sleekit Huns……..

    Twists,

That is a very inciteful post and should be compulsory reading for all.

We have lost our way with the current corporate thinking. Many have been saying that for a long time and what would be criminal now is if that thinking doesn’t change.

If it doesn’t, if things remain the same, then the next manager will be the next victim of the current failed corporate strategy as Burnley 78 pointed out last night.

As for the PR and the MSM I see some saying that there should be a blanket ban at Celtic Park.

    I disagree entirely.

An overhawl of the PR system should have two main objectives.

    1. With regard to the MSM don’t give them an easy ride. Don’t ignore them or ban them. March right into their heart and tell them how it is, what’s going on, how the club sees things, and let them deal with it. Dare them not to report the truth. Equally, there are financial relations to cultivate there – use your business nous and clout.

    2. Even more importantly get the PR department to properly reach out to the fans. Not just by way of statements on a website — you have to do far more than that. Get out there, get among the supporters. Rach out to your customer base. John Paul Taylor is a lovely guy, Celtic through and through, but he is a one man band equipped with a budget that barely stretches beyond a pencil, a notepad, an elastic band and a large box of paracetamol for the permananent sore head he has in attempting to deal with the Celtic support.

PR should be PRO active not reactive, It should innovative and, dare I say it, progressive.

Get out there, or to put it another way — get right intae them.

  29. BROGAN ROGAN TREVINO AND HOGAN SUPPORTS OSCAR KNOX, MACKENZIE FURNISS AND ANYONE ELSE WHO FIGHTS NEUROBLASTOMA

    ‘a very inciteful post’

    ####

Touch of the TD67’s about that, if you don’t mind me saying so.

  30. What is the Stars on

My god the ostrich brigade fight on with their drivel

Ronny is finished. He was useless

    Get over it

  31. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

    Earnie

Never even noticed that — predictive brain and text — insightful not!

  32. Twisty – I hope yer right matey……but I fear your erudite understanding of the human condition may have let you down at the first jump…

The same practitioners of spin conditioned us to believe over the years we were paranoid to contemplate the prospect of official cheating and ither hun chicanery………drip, drip drip, – every day another snyde story and headline written by a hun supporter with a typewriter and latterly laptop……..

Celtic’s financial probity collided wiith the hun hari-kari and galvanised their support to get us by all means possible……..

One of those means is via the social medium – relatively easy done, cheap and effective if the message is consistent and repeated ad-nauseam.

Delighted you are on track…………stay away from them cuddies mind!

I’ve made a similar point recently about the online community not really reflecting the wider fanbase. Mostly in relation to fans in my office knowing zero about Res 12 and also that actually a large part of our support are quite keen on TRFC being in the same league.

  34. D Moyes 8/11 not sure about him.

Lenny 11/5 loved him, he left, no going back.

    Alan Stubbs 12/1 not sure.

    H Larsson 14/1 can’t see it.

Paul Lambert 16/1 he could be the man?

Brendan Rodgers 16/1 wouldent mind him.

Malky Mackay 20/1 he’d be my pick, although the PC mob and the CT would be in a snit.

Martin O’Neill 20/1 will need a lots money to buy, so I doubt that’s gonny happen.

Steve Evans 25/1 can’t see it.

Garry Caledwell 25/1 not for me, but who knows?

Conor McGregor 500/1 now yer talkin :))

  35. Finally, as I’m about to be preoccupied for an hour or so at 9-30, something that’s been eating me for a few days. Well actually it’s been going on for months but Sunday has put it firmly on the CQN daily agenda.

    Our host Paul.

Clearly Paul is a friend of Peter Lawell. How close I’ve no idea, but let’s assume fairly close friends.

There is a clamour on here for Paul to come out and criticise Peter Lawell personally. It’s becoming a regular occurrence. Even Phil Mac has had a veiled dig.

Here is the problem I have. If I owned this blog, and let’s assume Peter Lawell was my friend, I’d be uncomfortable slaughtering him on a blog, or even criticising him. I’m sure I’d give him my opinion in person but turning on my friend?

I think Paul 67 needs cut some slack on this.

I know I’ll get hit with the lazy journalism thing, but hey, I stood in the jungle for a long number of years singing “we’ll support you ever more” , faithful through and through” and you’ll never walk alone.

Last month though I was threatening not to renew re res 12, until BRTH put my mind at rest on that one.

Just a personal opinion guys and one I’m sure which won’t be shared by many.
