Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

Just another bitter poster on a blog with an anti PL CFC board agenda, pathetic and playground stuff in my “opinion, another uni socialist ? It has the DNA .imo that is.

    YNOT67,

is everyone in life who posts something you don’t like an ex UNI Socialist ?

what is it about the link that is pathetic ?

what is it about the link that is playground.

I could say your remarks have all the DNA of an auld f4nny who never went to UNI ?

An auld f4nny who thinks that he learned more from the university of life than any student could do.

An auld f4nny who thinks that the board and celtic plc can do no wrong.

    But I wont ;-)

I reckon you’re just an auld Tim who doesn’t like the club being slagged off, in any way.

    But I could be wrong.

    re Billy Dodds

He’s not a mate of mine, however I got to know him a little many years ago when he was a player at Aberdeen.

I can not speak highly enough of him. He was very supportive of a charity i was involved with. He did way more than the basic required that most players do out of duty.

He also suffered a personal family strategy and took responsibility for children involved.

I think he probably embodies a lot of values that would be a good fit with Celtic.

I’m not promoting him and Jim as an option – I’d be underwhelmed by their appointment but it would not be because Dodds played for Oldco and is an ardent supporter of their new guise.

Don’t think MON would come back as manager but a DoF role along with remaining as Ireland manager, and with Keane as new manager, may be appealing.

  5. I think we’ll get Brendan Rodgers.

He won’t get a bigger club than Liverpool; in the EPL.

Ergo he won’t get a crack at European football.

He has done well at Swansea and to an extent at Anfield

He has learned his trade while at Chelsea under Mourinho.

Do you really think Moyes would stick around?

Went to Spain and stayed in a hotel and didn’t learn the language?

Looks like he was shoving in time before a move back to the EPL. Could be wrong though…

  7. The etims diary this moring mentions Ronny offered to resign after the Ajax home game last year.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

I haven’t heard it mentioned before and it obviously was never commented on officially. The subtext was that Stachan was sounded out to step in.

If yout thinking billy Dodds embodies a lot of values that would fit well at Celtic, he had better do something about that £190,000 EBT he got at the Huns quick smart…..

  11. If DD gets his way and appoints Roy Keane, then that is me finished with football. Keane was a fantastic player /captain but his management record is diabolical in the extreme. We deserve better. I quite fancy MON with Henke as his underling but that ain’t gonna happen.

Regards the poll could we have another one asking who we’d prefer as our new manager rather than who we think will be????

  12. Still canny shake the feeling that the liars on the board are only having Ronny stay till the end of the season cause, folk that they’ve sounded out for the job have done they’re homework and done a, Roy Keane and ran for the hills….once he saw what was behind the green door.

It’s a little harsh to criticise a fellow for failing to learn to speak Euskara.

As for his choice of accommodation, you’re point is… what? He ought to have lived in a bought hoose?

If your emotional connection with Celtic is really that fragile, you may as well go now.

  17. The Hibs game lastnught neatly summed up why RD has been a costly mistake both in terms of cash spent and time that has passed. Pressurising the sevco back line is the way to succeed. Not playing a lonely Griffiths up front. But time to move on.

I’ve not been to CP since Maribor. I may well be one of those fair weather fans. But like it or not, this club needs to lure the likes of me from other pursuits. Bring the thunder back? No, how about some plain ole good football?

  18. We all get disappointed when we lose to lower league opposition however this has happened to Celtic all throughout the years.

Who are the only 2 Managers (discounting any who have managed us for less than a full season) in Celtic’s history never to have been beaten (in 90 mins) by lower league opposition?

What other unique records (one league and one cup) do these 2 Managers have in common?

  19. KINGLUBO on 21ST APRIL 2016 12:00 PM

So you wouldn’t have Keane based on his managerial record, but you would have Henke. Interesting.

  25. Re MON and Keane – are both not tied up with the Republic team throughout the Euros? Last group match is around 22 June. If they are appointed to Celtic, they will only have until 14 July to train Celtic squad before first leg of 2nd round qualifier – 3 weeks. If they take Ireland to next round then next round is 25-27 June. The press and half the fans will have the knives out for them if they fall at the first hurdle.

I would be that guy you mention. You’re dead right, back to back league cups. Have to admit I checked up on you. How could I forget we beat Thistle 3-0 in ’56? Still 2 LC in over 10 years was no threat to old Rangers’ supremacy. Big Jock was the man.

  27. malceye – don’t understand your point at all.

Hibs had less possession against Sevco than we did. They created less chances than we did – significantly less.

Time for a reality check. Regardless of who is appointed we will be doing nothing in Europe next season.

The gamble for anyone who isn’t available until mid-late June is that the 2nd qualifying round is against teams we should be beating comfortably without a manager. its the next round that it starts to get tricky.
