Rundown of possible opponents

1223

Austria Wien have played three league games this season, won one, drew one, lost one.  Scored six conceded eight.  Stuffed 5-1 by Salzburg two weeks ago.  They have only had to play one round of Champions League qualifiers so far, which they won 1-0 on aggregate against the Icelandic champions-cum-day-job-professionals. Send them over, please, Uefa.

Ludogorets Razgrad, from Bulgaria, knocked Dinamo Zagreb out of the Champions League qualifiers last season before going down to Slovan Bratislava in the play-off round.  They’ve won two, lost one, of their three league games this season.  Beat Partizan Belgrade home and away in last round, beat Slovan Bratislava on aggregate in round before that. They also have to play their home game for the next round at an alternate venue to due to a date clash with a concert. Happy to take this lot.

Legia Warsaw, won all three league games this season, scoring 12, conceding one.  Eliminated Molde, after drawing both games, in last round, took care of The New Saints (Wales) home and away in earlier round. Would be a great European tie though not sure if Zbyszek can arrange the result for us.

Maribor, from Slovenia, have won all three league games this season, scored 11, conceded two.  Eliminated APOEL Nicosia after two draws in last round.  APOEL got to the last eight of the Champions League in 2012, so this team are no pushover. Maribor also have the distinction of being the last team to knock Rangers out of Europe. Ever!

Shakhtyor Karaganda, 12 points off the pace after 22 games in Kazakhstan.  Beat Albanians, Korce, in last round and Bate Borisov (who recorded Champions League wins against Bayern Munich and Lille in 2012) in the earlier round.  The travel would be an issue; Karaganda is farther east that eastern Afghanistan. If I can paraphrase an Ibrox legend, define Europe. The fact they are midseason and, like Celtic, they’ve won through two rounds already, makes this a less attractive tie, but they are surely not a Champions League team.

Preferences: Shakhtyor Karaganda are the easiest possible opponents but a trip to Austria or Bulgaria would be best.

Would rather avoid: Legia will be the most difficult draw. Maribor will be a similar challenge as Elfsborg.

Lots more to blog about: last night’s performance, Kelvin, Honest Dave King… maybe later.

  1. Zbyesek well said my exact thoughts and I am on the other side of the planet. Plenty of opportunities to make new friends and Celtic supporters and although I understamd Legia are a good team Celtic would win , on and off the park. Bring on the Poles. What a party to be had. Hail hail. Hope you get a home draw Zbyesek

Re James Forrest- First of all I don’t think he is a coward. Two years ago when the team was really struggling he didn’t hide and kept the team in contention with very little useful support. That he hasn’t developed as a player since the early part of 2012 seems undeniable – but it’s hardly unusual over the last thirty years. In that time we have had any number of promising youngsters and few built on that early promise. Most got worse. That suggests to me that their is something wrong . So is it: a) every young player we ever sign b) the environment in which they play is not conducive to improving or c) our coaching does not get the best out of our youngsters.

    Exactly my thoughts.

Why is there the continued discussion about a nonsensical suggestion?

One more example of Udinese’s find them , sign them , develop them and sell them thing .——-

    Luis Muriel [ striker .]

    Sign him in 2010 [ aged 19 ] for 1.5 million euros.

    Loan him to Granada .

    Loan him to Lecce .

Take him back to Udine, play him and watch him rattle them in .]

Come the summer of 2013 agree to sell him to Liverpool / Manchester Utd for £ 20 million and tell Muriel the choice is his..

Making money- but never winning anything , Udinese style !

Macjay- I meant to say I found the discussion you had the other day about the pros/cons of working in Australia very interesting.

My daughter is almost certainly going to work there once she finishes her 2 years Foundation training. I have warned her that the plum jobs in Sydney and Melbourne will almost certainly go to Australian graduates but she’s still up for it.

  6. I might be thick but I thought. a company could terminate a consultant’s services at any time. Never heard of one being probed before.

  7. Zbyszek as I said before we kicked a ball this season, I think we’re getting Legia!

I’m looking at a stay in the city centre, can you recommend anywhere, oldtown perhaps near market sqaure or Zygmunts column.

Any advice would be good :¬)

  8. sorry about the spelling Zbyszek Friday night here winding down with a few glasses. Whatever the draw the Celts will be there. Hail Hail.

  9. Zbyszek

You are correct the Celtic support would love Poland and Warsaw.

As long as unlike oldtim and I they leave the rain back home

  10. I could have sworn JF skinned the Ross County left back multiple times who was at a stand still at the end of the game, must have dreamt it.

Fact of life , early season form is always patchy , we cannot be brilliant every game !!

In summary , the negativity is

    – JF coward

    – Stokesy crap

    – Effe bombscare

    – Board liars

    – GB heroes

    – Mgrs hopeless

    – Coaching pathetic

    – finance before football

Apart from that lot , everything is just dandy!

I’m sure the half baked negativity will keep the board on their toes and justify the continual spouting of utter tosh.

It an alien abduction type of thing. :)

  12. DBBIA encourage your daughter to go for it. Most Aussies are recent migrants or their children and I always find them to be really friendly. I hear that Melbourne is very good. Hope to have a trip there sometime soon. I was in Gold Coast , Sydney and near the Victoria border in April. Sure there is some economic strife but less than most places and the people are genrally very positive about life the universe and everything Celtic. Your daughter will have an adventure. Not a bad spot the West Island.

  13. So long as we play at home on the 20th, I’ll be happy. Great to be in the draw, Wednesday night’s no show seems a long time ago now.

Mickbhoy – wind your neck in, who hasn’t had a pre flight early tipple? For some unknown reason, you seem to think it’s ok to come on here and criticise a real Celtic man and his family. Not on.

For anyone with some knowledge –

If we are to accept that sevco have £10million in the bank , how long will that last?

  17. What a great time to be a Celtic supporter.

Here we are looking forward to a CL playoff tie as our former rivals contemplate Brechin City and potential 2nd administration. Armageddon even.

Even our malcontents are revelling in the current 111 section issues and lack of interest by our leadership in signing average players for headline grabbing crazy money.

Great days to be a Celtic fan. A shame about the GB situation. I hope it can be resolved. If not then hopefully they can find another club who will embrace their energy. And Celtic can find other stimulus for creating its famous old atmosphere.

Be sure to use the ” Old Tims Club ” for local assistance,or ,at the very least, local contacts.

Brisbane ,Sydney,Melbourne and Perth all have C.Q.N.ers.whom I know are only too ready to provide any assistance required.

My comments about the current state of political play in Oz. were related to a decline in the economy IN THE SHORT TERM.

Young people can always cry all the way to the beach.

Don`t hesitate to let me know if I can be of any assistance in the future.

Our Hero is long overdue a re-appearance, he’s been hiding under the bed for too long.

  21. Back to my earlier post.

Ojamaa got few minutes in one of the league games, and 60 in the game against Molde. How the poster knows he is our best player?

    So

If it’s Legia and trip to Poland, forget about myths and gossips.

Europe till Christmas is a huge weight off the shoulders, another 2.1m guaranteed from participating in the CL play-off and then will either be another CL campaign(we know the financial benefits) or a chance to give the coefficient a hefty boost in the Europa.

Surely must be some scope to improve the TEAM now, no more squad men or works in progress.

Rangers can on Clyde who was a clever and articulate guy…

Gave a good summary of their financial position. By his reckoning income over 18 months has been just shy of £40m – comprising £22m share issue and 2x £7m season ticket incomes plus sponsorship .

He pointed out no fees had been spent purchasing players as mostly free players . So wages are the only substantial out going .

His question was how come only £10m left?

So by my reckoning £10m will last 6 months…
